Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Revolution and the Empire, From the French of the Journal D'une Femme De Cinquante Ans, 1920 At her death in 1853, she left the manuscript to her only surviving son, Aymar, who in turn willed it to his nephew, Hadelin, Comte de liedekerke-beaufort, who confided it a short time before his death to his son Aymar, by whom the memoirs were published in Paris in 1906. The book met with an immediate and well-deserved success, and in a few years reached the sixteenth edition. In his Preface the Comte de liedekerke-beaufort says that with the Marquise de La Tour du Pin dis appeared one of the last vestiges of the high society of the period before the Revolution, of which the traditions have to-day completely vanished. The reader of these memoirs cannot fail to appreciate the high qualities of heart and soul and mind shown by the author. Those who knew her, both esteemed and loved her. They united in saying that rarely was greater stability united to greater charms, more con stant fidelity to duty to greater kindliness.
