Book Glances Back Through Seventy Years Vol 1 of 2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glances Back Through Seventy Years, Vol. 1 of 2: Autobiographical and Other Reminiscences The public will be the best judges whether the author of the following pages was well or ill-advised by partial friends to pen these rambling reminiscences of an active, if not an exciting career, covering well-nigh three reigns. The chapters that form a contribution to the history of Pictorial journalism, and the recollections of Mr. Thackeray and a few other notable men, French as well as English, may possibly have a certain value, mixed up though they be with notices of men and things which the world, in its peremptory way, has made up its mind to forget. Yet readers, on the whole, may find the writer's reminder of such matters not uninteresting, and the volumes generally neither prosy nor dull. This is the utmost the writer pretends to claim for them, and in this spirit he commends the book to his brethren of the press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections and Travels at Home and Abroad, Vol. 2 Under this title, that of Introduction, or the more modern term of Foreword, that of Apology would often be more appropriate for the head and front of a book, so much of the page is assigned to making excuses or giving reasons for its publication. I have no call to make such exculpations, if it is only because that there are but eighteen copies, and several of these will remain in my own immediate family, so from this scant number little harm can go to the world outside. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Random Recollections of an Old Publisher, Vol. 2 of 2 One of the, if not the very last engagement Mr. Toole had at the Gaiety Theatre in the Strand before he went to America might have led to a much more serious misunderstanding than it did. I think I am right in saying that John Hollingshead seldom had written agreements with any of the principal people in the company. His word was his bond; and his word was good for any sum to his staff. Toole's understanding in this particular engagement was that he was to take one-half of the receipts after, I think, seventy pounds per night. Now, on the face of that understanding, it would certainly seem that no mistake could arise, because, if there was not seventy pounds in the house any night, Toole would not receive anything. And it so happened there were nights when the receipts were under seventy pounds; but on Monday and Saturday, at the least, there was nearly double that sum per night. Smith, Wrought into verse by his friend, Geo. M. P. Baird. Come sit with me, My Friend, by my heart's hearth to-night, At Yuletide shall old joys abide beside us in its light. Five and three-score years, to-day, I round in Times, despite, So Friend, Come sit by the Fire. Many are the Pleasant Folk I've met along the road, Faring down the Marchant Ways, sharing bread with me; Trusting in each other, we have journeyed merrily, And now we'll rest by the fire. We have wrought and fought, full long for heaven and the State. Valiant battle we have lost, but the war is won; Home we march victorious, beneath the setting sun, To sit in peace, by the fire. And evermore upon his Day Who Came in Love of Man, For Soul-wine and loaves o' love beneath Yule's holly tree, Here, or out beyond the vale, I'll call you back to me With, Come Friend, sit by the fire. The Dreaming Child Went Long Ago On his seventieth birthday by Geo. M. P. Book A History of the Book in America

Download or read book A History of the Book in America written by Robert A. Gross and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Two of A History of the Book in America documents the development of a distinctive culture of print in the new American republic. Between 1790 and 1840 printing and publishing expanded, and literate publics provided a ready market for novels, almanacs, newspapers, tracts, and periodicals. Government, business, and reform drove the dissemination of print. Through laws and subsidies, state and federal authorities promoted an informed citizenry. Entrepreneurs responded to rising demand by investing in new technologies and altering the conduct of publishing. Voluntary societies launched libraries, lyceums, and schools, and relied on print to spread religion, redeem morals, and advance benevolent goals. Out of all this ferment emerged new and diverse communities of citizens linked together in a decentralized print culture where citizenship meant literacy and print meant power. Yet in a diverse and far-flung nation, regional differences persisted, and older forms of oral and handwritten communication offered alternatives to print. The early republic was a world of mixed media. Contributors: Elizabeth Barnes, College of William and Mary Georgia B. Barnhill, American Antiquarian Society John L. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Eighty Years This little volume of Reminiscences has been sent out to the public in response to the Wishes of numerous friends. I make no claims for it beyond this, and it repre sents the recollections of one Who has seen many stirring events and met many notable personages of a past generation, that to me at least seems not less interesting or important than the present. The recalling of these incidents, Which I can do most readily though now nearing ninety, has been to me a labour of love, and I trust that in this volume will be found much to interest. An almost Spartan simplicity and temperance, an austere morality, and, with all the Puritanic reserve of their habits, a warm affection and great benevolence towards their fellow creatures, made this small circle of highly educated literary people a remarkable and admirable one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Checkered Lifetime: Told for His Children Other members of the Jinthrop colony were Smiths, Averys, Tabers, Mor gans, Knowltons, Hales and so forth, and there was much intermarrying, so that the Stoddards of the present generation are descended from nearly the entire original shipload which sailed from Yarmouth. More than that is said to be true, for one of the earlier Averys married the daughter of a Pe quot chief and my own father bore very distinctly the indications of that remarkable addition to tho oots of the family tree.
