Book excerpt: See Naples: A Memoir begins in a villa high above the gorgeous ruin of Naples four years after World War II. Composer Douglas Allanbrook is passionately involved with Laura, a ringer for Bette Davis, but he is in love with Naples, with the opera at San Carlo, with the inflections and rhetoric of the scugnizzi, street actors in this most dramatic of cities. Allanbrook spent from 1943 to 1945 in Italy with a U.S. infantry division that took seventy-five percent casualties, shuffling among land mines, reading maps in command posts by lamplight, and watching helplessly as his friends were killed. In 1949 he returned to Naples, where he cured himself of the war and married Candida, with whom he returned to America to make a family and a life.

Download or read book Women Travel Writing and Truth written by Clare Broome Saunders and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of truth has been one of the most constant, complex, and contentious in the cultural history of travel writing. Whether the travel was undertaken in the name of exploration, pilgrimage, science, inspiration, self-discovery, or a combination of these elements, questions of veracity and authenticity inevitably arise. Women, Travel, and Truth is a collection of twelve essays that explore the manifold ways in which travel and truth interact in women's travel writing. Essays range in date from Lady Mary Wortley Montagu in the eighteenth century to Jamaica Kincaid in the twenty-first, across such regions as India, Italy, Norway, Siberia, Austria, the Orient, the Caribbean, China and Mexico. Topics explored include blurred distinctions of fiction and non-fiction; travel writing and politics; subjectivity; displacement, and exile. Students and academics with interests in literary studies, history, geography, history of art, and modern languages will find this book an important reference.

Download or read book Delirious Naples written by Pellegrino D'Acierno and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is addressed to “lovers of paradoxes” and we have done our utmost to assemble a stellar cast of Neapolitan and American scholars, intellectuals, and artists/writers who are strong and open-minded enough to wrestle with and illuminate the paradoxes through which Naples presents itself. Naples is a mysterious metropolis. Difficult to understand, it is an enigma to outsiders, and also to the Neapolitans themselves. Its very impenetrableness is what makes it so deliriously and irresistibly attractive. The essays attempt to give some hints to the answer of the enigma, without parsing it into neat scholastic formulas. In doing this, the book will be an important means of opening Naples to students, scholars and members of the community at large who are engaged in “identity-work.” A primary goal has been to establish a dialogue with leading Neapolitan intellectuals and artists, and, ultimately, ensure that the “deliriously Neapolitan” dance continues.

Download or read book Food and Women in Italian Literature Culture and Society written by Claudia Bernardi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how women's relationship with food has been represented in Italian literature, cinema, scientific writings and other forms of cultural expression from the 19th century to the present. Italian women have often been portrayed cooking and serving meals to others, while denying themselves the pleasure of the table. The collection presents a comprehensive understanding of the symbolic meanings associated with food and of the way these intersect with Italian women's socio-cultural history and the feminist movement. From case studies on Sophia Loren and Elena Ferrante, to analyses of cookbooks by Italian chefs, each chapter examines the unique contribution Italian culture has made to perceiving and portraying women in a specific relation to food, addressing issues of gender, identity and politics of the body.
