Download or read book Recollections of My Own Times Classic Reprint written by George Shea and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of My Own Times I began at my rural retreat in Brattleboro, Vermont, now eleven years ago (August 1, 1883), to indite these Recollections. Since that time anxious business and other cares have required all the attention my ability could exert. At last a season of comparative retirement from the actual strifes of business comes to me, offering cause to hope that it puts it in my power to complete what I then undertook. There are many projects and events of which I alone am now able adequately to relate. It will disclose motives, objects, and careers of abiding interest; and - as it has been said by those who chiefly have persuaded me to the task - will make more clear deeds upon which must rest the fame of men whose names are already esteemed of permanent historic value. They all are passed through this to the higher and eternal life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of My Life and Times: An Autobiography I have selected from the Journal those portions which seemed most likely to interest the general reader, and as these are given in their chronological order they will be found to furnish a supplemental narrative. The same qualities are apparent throughout these manuscripts which distinguished the man in all his ways - kindliness and simplicity, an all-pervading love for Christ, and tender consideration towards his fellow-men. His object was not the establishment of a literary reputa tion, but to recall for his own profit, and to relate for the instruction of others, these simple recollections of a de voted life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections No writer of such a book as this can either escape the charge of egotism or plead to it Not guilty. One can only hope for a merciful judge ment. The present volume is probably not worse than many others that have appeared in the past few years. Perhaps, however, the first three chapters, and those on Church and other religious movements in the past half-century, may serve to remind the general reader of facts which he has forgotten, or which may be new to him. At least, the movements and agencies noticed are sufficiently diversified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of My Own Times, Vol. 1 of 3 The intentions, the integrity, and independence of my pen will, I hope, defend its humble productions from the unmerited fate of its persecuted master. I am, however, sensible, that the anticipations excited by these Memoirs, may be unpropitious to their effect, interspersed even as they are with public dpcuments and official correspondence of interesting character; yet I do promise myself that the transactions, anecdotes, facts, and reflections, which I re cord, will not be deemed altogether unworthy the attention of the citizen, the soldier, the patriot, and the statesman. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Random Recollections Though no portions of the first and second editions of this work were on sale, they were soon exhausted in supply ing calls on me for copies. The requests in numerous news papers and letters that I would place the book where it could be purchased, amounted almost to a rebuke for my not hav ing done this. In compliance with this desire, I have spent a few weeks in preparing a third edition, which will be issued and sold by a book-publishing house. The new matter in this third edition makes the volume about two thirds larger than the second edition, and about three times as large as the first. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Impressions In giving these Recollections and Impressions to the public, I feel some sort of explanation is due, - and the explanation is, that they were written at long intervals during the last four or five years, entirely for my grandchildren, and are therefore of a more domestic character than if a larger audience had been anticipated. I have never kept a diary, and am conscious that what I have written is often very desultory, and at all times it is difficult to keep reminiscences from being a dry catalogue of names. Had I even suppressed the personal note, the sketches of well-known people who came into our life might appear too like detached portraits, lacking a frame. Such as they are, I shall feel grateful and pleased if my readers find some little interest in any of them. Book Recollections Personal and Literary Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections Personal and Literary Classic Reprint written by Richard Henry Stoddard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections, Personal and Literary His youth showed again how much more inborn tendency has to do with one's life than any exter nal forces, such as guardianship, means, and what we call education. The thrush takes to the bough, wheresoever hatched and fledged. Many waters cannot quench genius, neither can the floods drown it. The story of Dickens's boyhood, as told by him self, is not more pathetic, nor is its outcome more beautiful, than the story of Richard Henry Stod dard's experiences, his orphanage, his few years' meagre schooling, his work as a boy in all sorts of shifting occupations, the attempt to make a learned blacksmith of him, his final apprenticeship to iron moulding, at which he worked on the East Side from his eighteenth to his twenty-first year. As Dr. Griswold put it, he began to mould his thoughts into the symmetry of verse while he moulded the molten metal into shapes of grace. Stoddard, how ever, afterward said that a knowledge of foundries was not one of the learned doctor's strong points. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: tinctly remember the little negro boys who were my boon companions. On Sundays, my uncle being a strict Presbyterian, I was denied the pleasure of their society, being only permitted to watch them through the paling fence which surrounded the home, while they roamed with joy and freedom over the whole farm. Despite my youth this visit left an indelible impress upon my mind, because it was there that my mother died. My impressions of my mother consist of faint memories, blended with traditions, and the accounts of those who knew her. The composite picture is that of a woman of gentle, yet dignified presence; a face of rare sweetness and refinement, ?gray eyes and chestnut hair. Sympathetic and capable, with a large endowment of common sense; deeply religious, living in conscious nearness to the unseen. From the far-away past comes the subtile sense of her tender care, and the sweet picture of this sainted woman, strong in faith and love, offering up prayers for her boys. From Boutetourt my little brother and I were carried in the fall of 1863?I cannot recall how or by whom? to Richmond. Here my father, no longer in the army but holding some official place with the Confederate chapter{Section 4Government, sought to establish a home and gather around him all his children. My experiences and trials in the capital of the Confederacy during the last eighteen months of the war will form the recitals of the next chapter. CHAPTER II War Times in Richmond HE most distinct impression left upon my mind of this period?the last eighteen months of the war?is that of cold and hunger. There were certainly many days of light and sunshine, and doubtless many times when I had enough and to spare, but these occasions have nearly all been effaced by the other and more distinct memor..

Download or read book Recollections of My Life Vol 2 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Maximilian I. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of My Life, Vol. 2 of 3 For the second time in the course of one year, and in high spirits, I entered Messina; again, as on a former occasion, a charming voyage was in store for me again, as before, a golden morning shone in Sicilian splen dour. But man is a strange and inconceivable creature, longing for new impressions, and these were not new, so I was not enthusiastic, for I had seen Spain. I was glad, however, to be able to run into Messina this time, and was pleasantly surprised to find in the middle of a well secured and closed harbour the celebrated Charlemagne, ' the first screw line-of - battle ship of France, which was a matter of great interest to us sailors. The harbour is not large, but is secured by piers and chiefly filled by coasters. The marine and commercial life is concentrated on the shore, and is so busy and loud that it is heard on entering the harbour as the noise of a waterfall; it annoyed our German phlegm by that nu meaning and wild contention and roaring which is a part of these perpetually noisy southerners. It was the fish-market, and a colossal swordfish, caught in the Faro, was exhibited for sale in a booth. Here was opportunity enough for quarrels, furious curses, ear-piercing cries, each trying to outcry the other, the favourite mode of wrestling amongst the Italians of to-day. Before suspecting any harm, one of our friends had his pocket picked of his handkerchief which gave occasion to much annoyance and amusement and was a caution for the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Vol. 1 of 2 I feel sure that I shall not disappoint my readers when I make the preliminary announcement that these two volumes do not profess to be anything in the nature of an autobiography. One reason why I have not attempted an autobiography is that my life, in its own course, has been uneventful, and that I have no story to tell about it which could have any claim on public interest. Another reason is that it has been one of the happiest fortunes of my life to meet With a great many distinguished men and women about whom readers in general would be glad to hear anything that can be said in addition to what they know or have learned already. These volumes, therefore, are strictly reminiscences, recollections of the eminent persons with whom I have been brought into association, and not a record of my own other wise unimportant doings. I have not even arranged these volumes With any careful attention to strict chronological order. Naturally they group them selves to some extent with regard to the general sequence of my opportunities, but my main idea has. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections From 1806 to 1873, Vol. 1 of 2 TO resume - at the time I write Of, drinking was one Of the grossest vices of the day, and as the Goodwood Hunt was then in its glory, Stoke was the scene of many vivacious and bibacious nights. Six O'clock was the latest hour at which people sat down to dinner, indeed in many houses, it took' place an hour earlier, and as among the fox-hunters there were at least some half-dozen four-bottle men, what ought to have proved the feast Of reason ended in being the flow Of bowl. NO sooner had the ladies left the room than a horse-shoe shaped mahogany table was placed before the fire fresh glasses, deviled biscuits, and a magnum Of port made their appearance, and the orgies began. Toasts were drunk, fines Of salt water were inflicted upon those who would not fill their glasses, Bacchanalian songs were sung.
