Book Recollections of Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections of Mexico Classic Reprint written by Waddy Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Mexico I Have yielded with a good deal of reluctance to the importunities of many of my friends in consenting to devote the little leisure which is left me from professional and other avocations, to writing the following pages. No thought of such a thing ever occurred to me during my residence in Mexico, or I should have supplied myself, as I had abundant means of doing, with the materials for such a work. The book, therefore, will be found to contain just what its title imports - "Recollections and Desultory Dissertations." The reader must not expect the life and freshness of a finished picture, but mere sketches and outlines - nor that minute exactness of detail on many subjects which may be desirable, although I believe that the sketches will be found to be generally accurate; I can say in the words of an affidavit to an answer in chancery, "that the facts stated as of my own knowledge are true, and those stated on the information of others I believe to be true." I am not sure, however, that a description of the customs, scenes, and peculiarities of a country is not generally the better for being written a year or two after the writer has left it. The want of exactness in minute particulars is compensated by the absence of a sometimes wearisome tediousness of detail, and often of circumstances of interest only to the writer. And it is perhaps also true that the general remembrance - a sort of skeleton map which is left on the mind of the writer will give to the reader a more accurate coup d'aeil of the country and all its peculiarities, physical and social, than a more minute description. Before I went to Mexico I sought in vain for some work which would give me some idea of the society, manners, and customs of that unique, and, in a great degree, primitive people. This want has been since supplied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Wool's forces at the time that command passed through Parras, en route to Saltillo The true and cor dial spanish-mexican embrace was given to the colonel by Don Manuel, and a hearty welcome to our troops and our officers could hardly restrain him from turning the whole army into his wine-cellars in his excess of hospitable feeling He, with many of the best Mexicans, had an intense hatred of the tyranny of Santa Ana, and held himself ready for resistance to him. As instances of the wealth at com mand of these ricos in that country, I would mention, that we were told of one gentleman, who, when Santa Ana's army started from San Luis to cross the arid desert to attack us, had presented five thousand mules to that general to transport water for the troops; and of another, who had mounted a whole regiment of lancers on horses of one color, and that no common color for that animal, nan keen, as a present to his country. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of My Life, Vol. 1 of 3 A year has elapsed since the mournful tragedy of Queretaro closed the career of one of the most gifted, genial, and chivalrous of princes; of one who seemed destined, by his liberal and enlightened policy, to develop the wonderful resources of a great empire, and to advance the cause of civilisation over the world. This was not to be; betrayed by his trusted officer into the hands of his ruthless enemies, nothing but his blood would satisfy them, and Mexico will probably again fall into the same anarchy from which she might have been rescued by Maximilian. The public will feel an additional interest from his sad fate in the following graphic account of the voyages and travels of this estimable prince. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico and the Mexicans: Or Notes of Travel in the Winter and Spring Not less fascinating was his description of the gorgeous hues of the flowers, the splendid coloring of the butterflies, and the brilliant plumage of the birds all of which seemed like pictures of fairy-land. Nor have I forgotten the testimony which he bore to the high courtesy with which he was everywhere received and treated, in social, as well as in official circles. Now that the bonds of friendship and alli ance between our own country and our sister Republic are about to be drawn so much closer; now that a new, auspicious, and even brilliant era is about to dawn upon the Land of the Aztecs, I made up my mind, in the month of January last, to see Mexico with my own eyes. Book The Mexican People

Download or read book The Mexican People written by Gutierrez De Lara and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican People: Their Struggle for Freedom This book is deliberately given the title of "The Mexican People: Their Struggle for Freedom." We know that to the average mind Mexico and freedom seem almost antithetical terms; that is why we wrote this book. The Mexican people have democratic traditions as grand, pure, and sane as those of any race in the world. Like all peoples, they have suffered bitter oppression at the hands of their own master class, but unlike the majority of peoples their weakness has made of them the peculiar prey of the foreign exploiter as well. For a hundred years they have maintained the bloodiest, most heroically abandoned fight for their liberties, not only against their own master class but against that master class leagued with Spain, with the United States, with France, and with England. We have long wished to tell of this struggle. It constitutes one of the most exalted dramas of the social process. If by this book, wrought out amidst many difficulties, we shall awaken the spirit of brotherhood and understanding in the hearts of some, for the battling proletariat of Mexico, our work will not have been without reward.
