Book Recollections of War Times

Download or read book Recollections of War Times written by Albert Gallatin Riddle and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of War Times: Reminiscences of Men and Events in Washington, 1860-1865 The war - its policies, incidents, and men - its struggles, sufferings, and losses - its horrors, adventures, and triumphs - has been written up, dwelt upon, discussed, and talked over, in public and private, till he is a brave or a reckless man who ventures now to challenge public attention to anything further he may have to offer on that topic. Lincoln and his advisers have been written of. The great commanders have been glorified in type; several have written their own memoirs, while every corps, division, and many brigades and regiments, have furnished historians, and many of very considerable merit. After all, these in a way were but the gigantic mechanics of the war. Back of all the armies, back of the great Secretaries, back of the President, - of all, - was the Congress, where really the war had first to be fought. The President and all his embattled hosts were but the executive - working out - executing the mandates of this seemingly silent, invisible, but all-creative and compelling power. Of this, save incidentally and cursorily, nobody has spoken or written, except Hon. E. G. Spaulding, of the New York delegation in the House. Book Reminiscences of the Civil War

Download or read book Reminiscences of the Civil War written by John Brown Gordon and published by . This book was released on 1904 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For many years I have been urged to place on record my reminiscences of the war between the States. In undertaking the task now, it is not my purpose to attempt a comprehensive description of that great struggle, nor an elaborate analysis of the momentous interests and issues involved. The time may not have arrived for a full and fair history of that most interesting period in the Republic's life. The man capable of writing it with entire justice to both sides is perhaps yet unborn. He may appear, however, at a future day, fully equipped for the great work. If endowed with the requisite breadth and clearness of view, with inflexible mental integrity and absolute freedom from all bias, he will produce the most instructive and thrilling record in the world's deathless annals, and cannot fail to make a contribution of measureless value to the American people and to the cause of free government throughout the world ... I have also recorded in this volume a large number of those characteristic and thrilling incidents which illustrate a unique and hitherto unwritten phase of the war, the story of which should not be lost, because it is luminous with the noblest lessons. Many of these incidents came under my own observation"--Introduction.

Download or read book Civil War Memories written by Robert J. Cook and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the Civil War continued to influence American life so profoundly? Winner of the 2018 Book Prize in American Studies of the British Association of American Studies At a cost of at least 800,000 lives, the Civil War preserved the Union, aborted the breakaway Confederacy, and liberated a race of slaves. Civil War Memories is the first comprehensive account of how and why Americans have selectively remembered, and forgotten, this watershed conflict since its conclusion in 1865. Drawing on an array of textual and visual sources as well as a wide range of modern scholarship on Civil War memory, Robert J. Cook charts the construction of four dominant narratives by the ordinary men and women, as well as the statesmen and generals, who lived through the struggle and its tumultuous aftermath. Part One explains why the Yankee victors’ memory of the “War of the Rebellion” drove political conflict into the 1890s, then waned with the passing of the soldiers who had saved the republic. It also touches on the leading role southern white women played in the development of the racially segregated South’s “Lost Cause”; explores why, by the beginning of the twentieth century, the majority of Americans had embraced a powerful reconciliatory memory of the Civil War; and details the failed efforts to connect an emancipationist reading of the conflict to the fading cause of civil rights. Part Two demonstrates the Civil War’s capacity to thrill twentieth-century Americans in movies such as The Birth of a Nation and Gone with the Wind. It also reveals the war’s vital connection to the black freedom struggle in the modern era. Finally, Cook argues that the massacre of African American parishioners in Charleston in June 2015 highlighted the continuing relevance of the Civil War by triggering intense nationwide controversy over the place of Confederate symbols in the United States. Written in vigorous prose for a wide audience and designed to inform popular debate on the relevance of the Civil War to the racial politics of modern America, Civil War Memories is required reading for informed Americans today.
