Book Recollection in the Republics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the execution of Charles I in January 1649, England's fledgling republic was faced with a dilemma: which parts of the nation's bloody recent past should be remembered, and how, and which were best consigned to oblivion? Across the country, the state's opponents, local communities, and individual citizens were grappling with many of the same questions, as calls for remembrance vied with the competing goals of reconciliation, security, and the peaceful settlement of the state. Recollection in the Republics provides the first comprehensive study of the ways Britain's Civil Wars were remembered in the decade between the regicide and the restoration. Drawing on a wide-ranging and innovative source base, it places the national authorities' attempts to shape the meaning of the recent past alongside evidence of what the English people - lords and labourers, men and women, veterans and civilians - actually were remembering. Recollection in the Replublics demonstrates that memories of the domestic conflicts were central to the politics and society of England's republican interval, inflecting national and local discourses, complicating and transforming inter-personal relationships, and infusing and forging individual and collective identities. In so doing, it enhances our understanding of the nature of early modern memory and the experience of post-civil war states more broadly. Memory was a multifaceted, dynamic resource, and this book emphasises its fecundity, the manifold meanings it possessed, and the creativity of those who deployed it. Further, by situating 1650s England in relation to other post-conflict societies, both within and beyond early modernity, it points to a consistency in some of the challenges that have confronted post-civil war states across time and space.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Visit to England, France and Germany, Made in 1862, and to Germany in 1885 Proud was the head, now at rest 'neath thy waves; lovely the form in thy fathomless caves, Oh, whis pering sea, oh, merciless sea. A few days after, twin babies were born in the steerage, and the ladies in the cabin called on the mother every day, bring ing some little delicacy. The babies were very pretty, and we named them Ocean and Oceana, because they were children of the sea, rocked by the wild waves on the bosom of the stormy Atlantic. When the steamer arrived at Queenstown, they, with their pa rents, went ashore, and the children of the sea were lost to us forever. Book Other Days

Download or read book Other Days written by A. G. Bradley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Other Days: Recollections of Rural England and Old Virginia, 1860-1880 None of the conventional apologies for a reminiscent volume, fortunately for the writer, are, in this case, called for. Neither the importunities of friends nor the problematical edi fication of descendants have anything to say to these pages. For they were written solely at the instigation and request of my publishers, who have kindly allowed me to absolve myself from any egotistic intention by dis closing the fact here. Furthermore, they were good enough to read the proof-sheets through, blue pencil in hand, at my request; and in declining to use the latter, I only hope they were discreet. My aim was to be as impersonal as the nature of the book, which is, for the most part, frankly and intentionally light, allowed. I am not at all sure that I have succeeded. But, in any case, I fancy that the scenes and characters recalled in these pages are somewhat out of the common run dealt with in books of this particular kind, which seem concerned, for the most part, with town and city life. Fortunately, too, the period covered by them closes long before the habit of writing books fell upon the author. So all temptation to drop into conventional and somewhat over beaten paths, and perhaps a worse form of egotism, is happily removed.
