Book Central America the West Indies and South America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Central America the West Indies and South America Classic Reprint written by Henry Walter Bates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central America, the West Indies and South America IN the present volume it has been the chief object of the Editor to adapt Von Hellwald's admirably-written survey of the countries treated of, to the presumed requirements of English readers, To this end the information contained in the works of many recent British travellers, overlooked by the German author, or published since his volume appeared, has been utilised, and statistical details corrected throughout in accordance with the most recent accessible data. In other respects the chief alterations introduced have been in reference to Natural History and the Geo graphical Relations of Faunas and Floras. Wherever these important subjects were treated of by Von Bellwald, it appeared to the Editor that the facts and their applica tions were not given with the accuracy which is noticeable in other portions of his work, and it was found necessary, therefore, wholly to recast these sections. In doing this, however, nothing has been introduced but what is likely to be perfectly intelligible and interesting to the general reader. Book Across Central America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Across Central America Classic Reprint written by J. W. Boddam Whetham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across Central America N the following pages I wish to give the reader an insight to a country not often visited by travellers, and which on that account may perhaps afford some interest. I arrived at the port of San José de Guatemala from San Francisco in October, 1875, proceeded to the city of Guatemala, and after some interesting trips, east and west, continued my journey northward. A good road took me as far as Coban in Alta Vera Paz, then by an Indian path over the mountain ranges I reached the Rio de la Pasion, which enabled me by canoe to land within a few leagues of what has been called the mysterious Lake of Peten. From Peten a journey of six days through the forest brought me to the Village of Tenosique, situated on the Rio de la Pasion, which here assumes the name of Usumacinta; thence by canoe to the island of Carmen in the Gulf of Mexico. Of the wonderful ruins - evidences of ancient Indian civilization - which are so profusely scattered over this part of the continent I visited Quiche, Copan, and Palenque. These have been so ably dealt with both by pen and pencil by historians and explorers, that I have only ventured to give a general idea of them for the information of those who have not read the important works on Central America. If my readers only know as little of the subjects of this volume before taking it up as I did before I started on my journey, I trust they will in some measure be repaid by its perusal. Book Seven Years Travel in Central America Northern Mexico and the Far West of the United States Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Years' Travel in Central America, Northern Mexico, and the Far West of the United States Behind the castle is a deep ravine, through which a clear brook rushes down to the sea between majestic trees. A crowd of half-naked women were occupied here in washing their linen. As we approached, they made signs that we should not come near - a rare instance of a feeling which in general seems to be almost unknown amongst the lower classes of Spanish America. As we proceeded in our walk we came to a grove of cocoa-nut trees, and on a small square between them saw the remains of a sugar factory, with several large kettles in good condition lying about. The establishment seemed to have never been in a working state, andmndoubtedly has been one of the many unfortue nate speculations begun in those regions of tropical America without a due appreciation of the difficulties and obstacles inseparably connected with the uncivilized state of a country, I have seen a like result of a similar speculation in British Honduras, where, in the wilderness surrounding the Mana tee Lagoon, l. Found all the improvements and costly ma chinery of an intended sugar plantation overgrown by the rank vegetation of a forest. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Winter in Central America and Mexico The knights of old journeyed into distant lands to do deeds of chivalry; the knights of to-day, more practical though not less courageous, go searching for the North Pole, for gold, for knowl edge, for adventure; but who of them has gone into distant, uncivilized lands in search of coffee? Such was the errand of the two whose wanderings and observations are recorded in this little volume. The journey was undertaken by Mr. James S. Sanborn, of the firm of Chase and Sanborn, of this city, in the interest of the coffee business of that firm. The author went, as narrated in the first chapter, to be a companion to her father, and, as far as a limited knowledge permitted, to speak the Spanish language. On our return' home, notes of our travels were published in the New England Grocer, for the interest of the trade. In much briefer form it appeared serially in The Wide World Magazine last year, and some isolated incidents have been treated in short articles for various newspapers and magazines during the past fifteen months. That my Opinion of the natives of the Five Republics will be in part disagreed with by others who know these lands is undoubted. But the story of our experiences may throw additional light upon peoples and countries often treated as opem boufie.
