Download or read book Recollections of a Varied Life Classic Reprint written by George Cary Eggleston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Varied Life Mr. Howells once said to me: Every man's life is interesting - to himself. I suppose that is true, though in the cases of some men it seems a difficult thing to understand. At any rate it is not because of personal interest in my own life that I am writing this book. I was perfectly sincere in wanting to call these chapters The Auto biography of an Unimportant Man, but on reflection I remembered Franklin's wise saying that whenever he saw the phrase without vanity I may say, some peculiarly vain thing was sure to follow. I am seventy years old. My life has been one of unusually varied activity. It has covered half the period embraced in the republic's existence. It has afforded me opportunity to see and share that development of physical, intellectual, and moral life conditions, which has been perhaps the most marvelous recorded in the history of mankind. Download or read book Recollections of a Varied Career Classic Reprint written by William F. Draper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Varied Career It may seem presumptuous for a man of ordinary talent, such as I esteem myself, to write his Memoirs; the only good excuse, perhaps, being that his experiences have been out of the ordinary. I began to write simply with the view of leaving a record for my descendants; but as I wrote, it seemed to me that few lives had covered as wide a field as my own. My public experience, - as a soldier in time of war, a Member of Congress while great questions were under consideration, and a diplomat, also in war time, - would be hard to equal in variety; and my private life covers invention in important lines, and a business career, commencing as an employee and closing as the head of a large industrial establishment, perhaps the largest in Massachusetts that is owned by its managers. I venture to believe that a portion of the great public may be interested in my story; but if not, no harm is done, as the book will serve the purpose for which it was originally intended. But at the outset of his career he gave serious offence to the authorities by an extravagant remonstrance against the order requiring professors to cut off their mus taches, and he never overcame the effect of this youth He was banished to remote and unimportant stations - Lesneven (finisterre), Rodez, Grenoble - and passed, with difficulty and slowly, through the grades to that of Professor of Philosophy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rembling Recollections I have reached my anecdotage after many years of hard work and varied experience, and my friends listen very kindly to my stories of the changes that have come to London since I entered it in 1859. They do more than listen: they suggest that it would be no bad idea to set my recollections down in book form and seek to interest a wider circle. I have done so; and present them to you in all modesty, without claiming for them any of the special interest that attaches to the life of soldier or statesman, or any of the gifts that belong of right to the life story of a man of letters. My little record is of changing times, of disappearing landmarks, of men and women who were much esteemed by your fathers when they went to the play, of colleagues who have worked by my side on the City Corporation, of which I have been a member since 1878. I have set it all down in simple fashion, as one man speaks to another. If such a plain tale can please you I shall indeed be pleased and, if it cannot, I must be content with the pleasure I have derived from recalling old times, old associations, and old friends. Mrs. Hobson, in full health and vigor not withstanding her seventy odd years, was actively engaged in various pursuits, both grave and gay. She had not time she had nothing of interest to say - there are so many memoirs not worth reading. Finally, Mrs. Richard Aldrich conceived the happy idea of putting into verse a Peti tion, a petition which, signed by twenty-four of Mrs. Hobson's friends, was sent to her, in the spring of 19073. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections: The Reminiscences of the Busy Life of One Who Has Played the Varied Parts of Sailor, Author and Lecturer And yet I feel very strongly that an Introduction to this book is needed, if ever a book needed such a thing. For I really believe that it may be my last; I dare not be more definite than that, though I would dearly love to emulate those giants of literature who can calmly announce that they have written their last page for publication, that for good or ill their message has been delivered and they will say no more. Ah no, fate has not dealt kindly enough with me for that, and because the snarl of the proverbial wolf is never out of my ears and the Spoor of his stealthy footfall is but too clearly traceable near my door, I must still be ready to take up my pen. This Introduction may serve as my valedictory, if, as it is most reasonable to expect, this book happens to be my last. Download or read book Recollections of My Life Vol 3 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Maximilian I. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of My Life, Vol. 3 of 3 This morning found us off the lofty, far-extending ridges of Teneriffe. Although the day was cloudy, the panorama that presented itself was very interesting, and new ln its features. Picturesquely did the long serrated ridge of the volcanic mountain display itself, with its sharp angular summit, its pointed Needles which, springing as it were from an extraneous nature, gazed up towards heaven from among the dark clouds, sometimes like the menacing finger of a giant, sometimes like the tower of a lofty ruin. Various deep rifts of volcanic origin extend down the heights, casting their deep shadows over the picture, even to the boiling sea. Between these, and flowing gently down from the black peaks of rock to the ocean, are the layers of cold lava. Thousands of years ago they caused death now Victorious nature (as on the ridges of Vesuvius) pursues her upward course over the vanquished lava. That the volcano has long been silent one may see by the fresh turf which creeps over the red earth almost to the top of the highest summit; by the pine woods, which force a way for themselves among the picturesque masses of rock and finally by the numerous houses and hamlets which, scattered among fields of well-ordered husbandry, enliven the sombre scene in a cheerful manner far up thc height. The whole resembles the northern coast of Madeira: one finds the same red-coloured soil, the same turf growing on the mountains, the same dusky colouring in the masses of rock; only, in addition to these. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Memoirs and Recollections of Editorial Life, Vol. 1 of 2 My father's name was Nehemiah Tinker. He was born at Mansfield, Conn. In 1740, of parents not in very affluent circumstances, it may be presumed, for he, and a younger brother, were apprenticed to a shoe maker. Before he was twenty-one years old, he set up the business of shoemaking, on his own account, in the adjoining town of Windham, then the shire town of Windham county. I have it from undoubted tes timony, that he was an excellent shoemaker - that he carried on a large business - and acquired a handsome property. That he possessed some share of the respect and confidence of his fellow citizens, I infer from the fact, that, for several years, he was a deputy-sheriff, the gaoler of the county, and a captain in the militia. This rank he held at the breaking out of the Revolutionary War. In March, 1776, when the militia from various parts of New England were offering their services to strengthen the army that was besieging Boston, the company under his command volunteered in the cause, and, with such equipments and provisions as the town could furnish, marched as far as Pomfret on their way to join the patriot army. At Pomfret they received intelligence of the evacuation of Boston by the British troops, and returned home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Four Continents: Recollections Grave and Gay of Events in Social and Diplomatic Life N writing these recollections of a varied life, Iduring which I have met many celebrities and seen many interesting outposts of Empire, I have given very few dates except historical ones, because I have been backwards and forwards so many times to Newfoundland, our oldest Colony, to Canada, and elsewhere, when my husband was appointed to official positions or was summoned to aid with his advice and experience in crises and emergencies, political and industrial. These visits are mentioned in these pages, and if I gave the dates of my frequent comings and goings, the book would assume the character of a journal - generally tedious reading. Nevertheless, I hope these impressions, which are written as they occur to my memory, and are not by any means given in chronological order, will interest some of that large majority of people who have been unable to visit the places in our Dominions which I have tried, however inadequately, to describe. Watching the development and psychology of nations is a very interesting study, and the more we do so the better we are likely to understand other nations and sense the position of our own.
