Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Sail to Steam: Recollections of Naval Life If such a man has the genius of his business, as had Frois sart and Boswell, he excels in proportion to his unconscious ness of the fact; his colors run truer. For lesser gabblers, who have not genius, the best way to lose consciousness is just to let themselves go; if they endeavor to paint ar tistically the muddle will be worse. To such the proverb of the cobbler and his last is of perennial warning. AS a barber once sagely remarked to me, You can't trim a beard well, unless you're born to it. It is possible in some degree to imitate Froissart and Boswell in that marvellous diligence to accumulate material which was common to them both; but, when gathered, how impossible it is to work up that old junk into permanent engrossing interest let those answer who have grappled with ancient chronicles. Book From Reefer to Rear Admiral

Download or read book From Reefer to Rear Admiral written by Benjamin F. Sands and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Reefer to Rear-Admiral: Reminiscences and Journal Jottings of Nearly Half a Century of Naval Life For several years prior to the last illness of my father, Rear-Admiral Benjamin F. Sands, the members of our family had urged him to write out his recollections of his naval life, having often enjoyed listening to his descriptions of the incidents of his various cruises. He had preserved copious notes of his service ashore and afloat, in journals and in his letters home, covering his entire career, and from time to time had fully outlined his sketches of particular matters of interest, thus having all his material well in hand. It was, however, only when confined to the house, in 1881, that he yielded to our requests and entered upon the work. In thus living over his life and jotting down incidents at first intended only to entertain and instruct the members of his family, he became more and more interested in his narrative, and with his excellent memory of dates, persons and incidents, supplemented by occasional references to the log-books of the many vessels upon which he had served, his narrative grew into somewhat of a history, though but simply told, of those days of naval service about which so little is known to the readers of to-day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy at Home, Vol. 1 of 3 The cargo was tolerably common-place, and so far calculated for the market; but he had, by way of preserving it fora few years, sprinkled it over with a little salt, and a certain strong, sweet, distilled liquor, to infuse vigour and freshness through it, only known to our fore fathers, but inadmissible in the said ware houses, and totally out of the line of the said dealers, who indeed considered it contraband. Book Lives of Distinguished American Naval Officers Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lives of Distinguished American Naval Officers Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by James Fenimore Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Distinguished American Naval Officers, Vol. 2 Few names connected with the American marine have so much claim to celebrity as that of the subject of this sketch. His services were of a character so bold and romantic, the means he employed were seemingly so inadequate to the ends he had in view, and his success, on one occasion in particular, so very brilliant as to have given rise, on the part of his political and personal enemies, to much unmerited and bitter calumny, while his admirers and friends have been induced to lean a little too strongly to the side of eulogy and undiscriminating praise. As the matter of the life and character of this distinguished officer has been frequently the subject of comment in biographies, of more or less merit, within the last few years, and a great mass of evidence has been produced to remove the veil which was so long drawn before his early years, this is perhaps the time when an attempt may best be made to arrive at a just appreciation of the deeds of the officer, and the qualities of the man.
