Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ... LETTERS FROM DR. LEWIS JOHNSTON TO HIS SON WILLIAM MARTIN JOHNSTON Savannah, July 17, 1773. Dear B1lly: We were all made very happy by receiving your letter of the 25th ult, together with the letters of Mr. Roberdeau and Dr. Rush. The very kind reception you met with from these gentlemen demands on our parts the warmest return of thanks, and on yours the most grateful acknowledgements, which will be best expressed by a constant care to please them, and to preserve that place in their regard and esteem which you have been so lucky thus early to obtain. I cannot express the satisfaction it gave your mother and me when we read the handsome and friendly things they both said of you in their letters, and the great hopes they gave us of your success in your future studies. Your outset is fair and promising and let me beg of you earnestly for our sakes, but more especially for your own, that such agreeable prospects may not be blasted by any want of application on your part, for however good your opportunities of acquiring useful knowledge may be, yet be assured that unless you cooperate by unwearied diligence with your teachers, all their pains will be but to little purpose. It is my wish and intention to give you such an education as may qualify you for discharging the important duties of the business you have made choice of, with honour and reputation. A skilful physician is one of the most respectable and useful persons in society; an ignorant pretender to it, the most despicable and mischievous. I confess it is an arduous task to acquire that extensive knowledge which is necessary to qualify a man to make a figure in this profession, but this so far from discouraging a young man of spirit, ought rather to stimulate him in the pursuit of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Georgia Loyalist One of the most interesting chapters of American history, the chapter that fairly describes the Loyalists, or Royalists, of the Revolution, and adequately tells their subsequent fate, for the most part remains yet to be written. It is commonly estimated that when the North American colonies had finally become the United States, the population of the country was less by a hundred thousand than before the war b;an. To England, Upper Canada, the West India Islands, and last, but by no means least, the fertile Province of Nova Scotia, the proud, unflinching, sorrowing Tories flocked. To the latter Province, which then included the sister Province of New Brunswick, certainly fully thirty thousand went, many with Howe's fleet at the evacuation of Boston, far more from New York, when the proclamation of independence was finally made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Canadian women fiction writers have become justifiably famous. But what about women who have written non-fiction? When Anne Innis Dagg set out on a personal quest to make such non-fiction authors better known, she expected to find just a few dozen. To her delight, she unearthed 473 writers who have produced over 674 books. These women describe not only their country and its inhabitants, but a remarkable variety of other subjects: from the story of transportation to the legacy of Canadian missionary activity around the world. While most of the writers lived in what is now Canada, other authors were British or American travellers who visited Canada throughout the years and reported on what they found here. This compendium has brief biographies of all these women, short descriptions of their books, and a comprehensive index of their books’ subject matters. The Feminine Gaze: A Canadian Compendium of Non-Fiction Women Authors and Their Books, 1836-1945 will be an invaluable research tool for women’s studies and for all who wish to supplement the male gaze on Canada’s past.

Book The Promise of Memory

Download or read book The Promise of Memory written by Lorna Martens and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers once believed in Proust’s madeleine and in Wordsworth’s recollections of his boyhood—but that was before literary culture began to defer to Freud’s questioning of adult memories of childhood. In this first sustained look at childhood memories as depicted in literature, Lorna Martens reveals how much we may have lost by turning our attention the other way. Her work opens a new perspective on early recollection—how it works, why it is valuable, and how shifts in our understanding are reflected in both scientific and literary writings. Science plays an important role in The Promise of Memory, which is squarely situated at the intersection of literature and psychology. Psychologists have made important discoveries about when childhood memories most often form, and what form they most often take. These findings resonate throughout the literary works of the three writers who are the focus of Martens’ book. Proust and Rilke, writing in the modernist period before Freudian theory penetrated literary culture, offer original answers to questions such as “Why do writers consider it important to remember childhood? What kinds of things do they remember? What do their memories tell us?” In Walter Benjamin, Martens finds a writer willing to grapple with Freud, and one whose writings on childhood capture that struggle. For all three authors, places and things figure prominently in the workings of memory. Connections between memory and materiality suggest new ways of understanding not just childhood recollection but also the artistic inclination, which draws on a childlike way of seeing: object-focused, imaginative, and emotionally intense.
