Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Chaperon, Vol. 1 of 3 Accordingly, when I had mounted my fea thered hat and black velvet gown, or my white satin gown and flowered cap, as the occasion might require, and patiently taken my station upon the chair, seat, or bench which I could most conveniently appropriate to myself, I beguiled the weary hours by studying those around me, trusting for the rest to chance, and to the principles which I had endea voured to impress upon the minds of my girls; viz. Not to flirt so as to attract atten tion, - not to think too highly of their own pretensions, - and above all, not to be betrayed into laughing at any man before they knew him, by which means more than one girl of my acquaintance has been obliged, for cousis tency's sake, to repulse a person whom, upon further acquaintance, she might have sincerely preferred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Chaperon My daughters were not beautiful enough, nor did they marry brilliantly enough, to excite the jealousy of other mothers. I had brought them up to avoid a fault odious in all, but especially so in the young, that of being more ready to perceive the failings than the merits of their companions we were, therefore, a popular family. I had myself the happy knack of being interested in the concerns and distresses of others, and I listened with pleasure to details however tri ing: I had consequently many intimate friends. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rombert, Vol. 1 of 2: A Tale of Carolina The constitution framed by him, taken as a whole, exhibits the hand of a philosopher, but it also exhibits much inconsistency, when viewed in connection with his other works. For instance, when it is considered that he wrote a treatise on government so liberal in its tendency as to call forth the spleen of numbers who maintained the divine right of rulers, and the duty of passive obedience in the subject, it appears singular that he should have endeavoured, by his constitution for Carolina, to create a nobility, and to give to every freeman absolute authority over his negro slaves. The very circumstance of a man of such eminent talents and profound views as John Locke having been the author of this incongruous constitution, places in a strong light the utter inability of legis lating at three thousand miles distance for a peo ple in a new country, with whose wants it is impos sible that the lawgiver should be fully acquainted. The truth of this is proved by the well-known fact, that the colonists never gave their consent to these laws, but contented themselves with adhering to such of them merely, as chanced to turn out applicable to their situation while they quietly allowed the rest to pass into oblivion, where they remained until some over-wise governor attempted to put them in force, in order to serve his own purposes. Then, with a spirit which has ever marked the Carolinians, they resisted them at once. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The day was late in Sep tember, but the air was still warm. The dahlias and china-asters were glowing in their beds, and the salvias, blue and red, made strong bands of colour where the sun's rays caught them. There was a fresh homely scent of damp grass and fallen leaves, and now and then a scent from the sea, which was but a few miles off beyond the woods of the home park.
