I have never kept a diary, and am conscious that what I have written is often very desultory, and at all times it is difficult to keep reminiscences from being a dry catalogue of names. Had I even suppressed the personal note, the sketches of well-known people who came into our life might appear too like detached portraits, lacking a frame. Such as they are, I shall feel grateful and pleased if my readers find some little interest in any of them.
