Book Recollections and Recipes of the Winery and the Vineyards Restaurant

Download or read book Recollections and Recipes of the Winery and the Vineyards Restaurant written by Patricia Pirtle and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We wanted this to be a cookbook with a view of its beginnings, starting with the winery. The restaurant came four years later. We had the good fortune to purchase the restaurant land in 1983. The winery took most of our time. Our son Charles had worked as a chef in New York and Kansas City and had also worked for his grandmother Mary Wallace (Patricias mother) in her (famous) drive-in restaurant in Lufkin, Texas. We suggested to him that he revive the old house with our help. Winery customers all wanted a place to have lunch. The restaurant would complement the winery and vice versa. He finally agreed, revived the old house almost single handedly and made the restaurant famous. After a while, the tail wagged the dog. This is an intimate view of the story, with recipes included.

Book Garlic Wine and Olive Oil

Download or read book Garlic Wine and Olive Oil written by Thomas Pellechia and published by Booklink. This book was released on 2000 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most people of the Mediterranean region, garlic, wine, and olive oil make up the Holy Trinity of foods: Garlic for taste and health; wine also for its medicinal value, plus the obvious enjoyment and relaxation that accompanies its use; and olive oil as a medium for cooking as well as for its own healthy properties. The many cultural and mythic dimensions of these three foods, whose use dates to pre-historic times, is discussed, along with an historical survey from Old World usage to the New, specifically to Brooklyn, New York, where the author grew up in a milieu of Italian, Jewish, and Greek neighborhoods, where garlic, wine, and olive oil were daily staples. With illustrations, historical quotes and facts, personal memoir, and both ancient as well as over 50 modern recipes, Garlic, Wine, and Olive Oil tells how reverence for these three foods was first developed in the Mediterranean and became integrated into cuisines around the world. In a tight, informative narrative, Thomas Pellechia covers the origins, cultivation, healthful attributes and preparation of these three holy foods.Rather than a dry history book or gathering of recipes, Garlic, Wine, and Olive Oil educates as it entertains, weaving together historical material (including many interesting ancient recipes), the author's ancestral connection to these foods, plus his travels through Europe and the Near East, and quick, easy-to-prepare, appetizing recipes. This unique format makes cooking and history come alive!

Book excerpt: Journalist Maximillian Potter uncovers a fascinating plot to destroy the vines of La Romance-Conti, Burgundy's finest and most expensive wine. In January 2010, Aubert de Villaine, the famed proprietor of the Domaine de la Romance-Conti, the tiny, storied vineyard that produces the most expensive, exquisite wines in the world, received an anonymous note threatening the destruction of his priceless vines by poison—a crime that in the world of high-end wine is akin to murder—unless he paid a one million euro ransom. Villaine believed it to be a sick joke, but that proved a fatal miscalculation and the crime shocked this fabled region of France. The sinister story that Vanity Fair journalist Maximillian Potter uncovered would lead to a sting operation by some of France's top detectives, the primary suspect's suicide, and a dramatic investigation. This botanical crime threatened to destroy the fiercely traditional culture surrounding the world's greatest wine. Shadows in the Vineyard takes us deep into a captivating world full of fascinating characters, small-town French politics, an unforgettable narrative, and a local culture defined by the twinned veins of excess and vitality and the deep reverent attention to the land that runs through it.

Download or read book Corkscrewed written by Robert V. Camuto and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert V. Camuto s interest in wine turned into a passion when he moved to France and began digging into local soils and cellars. Corkscrewed recounts Camuto s journey through France s myriad regions and how the journey brought about a profound change in everything he believed about wine. The world of great wines was once dominated by great Bordeaux ch'teaux. As those ch'teaux were bought up by moguls and international corporations, the heart of French winemaking moved into the realm of small producers, whose wines reflect the stunning diversity of regional environment, soil, and culture terroir. In this book we follow Camuto across France as he works harvesting grapes in Alsace, learns about wine and bombs in Corsica, and eats and drinks his way through the world s greatest bacchanalia in Burgundy. Along the route he discovers a new generation of winemakers who have rejected chemicals, additives, and technologically altered wines. His book charts an odyssey into this new world of French wine, a world of biodynamic winegrowing, herbal treatments, lunar cycles, and grape varieties long ago dismissed as difficult. A celebration of the diversity that makes French wine more than a mere commodity, Camuto s work is a delightful look beyond the supermarket to the various flavors offered by the true vintners of France.

Menus aren't just groups of dishes that have to work on a practical level (meals that cooks can manage), they also have to work as a succession of flavours. But what is perhaps most special about them is the way they can create very different moods - menus can take you places, from an afternoon at the seaside in Brittany to a sultry evening eating mezze in Istanbul. They are a way of visiting places you've never seen, revisiting places you love and celebrating particular seasons. How to Eat a Peach contains many of Diana's favourite dishes in menus that will take you through the year and to different parts of the world.
