Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of parent-to-child financial transfers and economic resources on financial transfers, co-residence, care giving, and time help as multiple, interdependent transfers from middle-aged adult children to their elderly parents. Analyzing data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, which provides long-term observations of financial reciprocity and recent reports about elder care, the current study finds strong positive effects of prior parent-to-child financial transfers in the models of care giving and time-help, which indicates the importance of reciprocity. Co-residence is positively related to past parent-to-child financial transfers; however, the effect becomes weak when other control variables are added. In terms of determinants of resource transfers, the results of multivariate logistic regression analyses suggest that the economic resources of parents and adult children are strong determinants of child-to-parent financial resource transfer when parent-to-child financial transfers and the socio-demographic characteristics of parents and adult children are controlled for. Controlling for child-to-parent financial transfers, economic resources of the parents and adult children, and other characteristics of the parents and children, adult children's decisions of co-residence are responsive to the parents' needs (surviving status, age, and health) and several characteristics of adult children (marital status, employment status, and the number of living siblings). Parent-to-child financial transfers are a strong determinant of care giving and time help to elderly parents after controlling for economic resources and socio-demographic characteristics of parents and adult children. Socio-demographic characteristics of parents and respondents were observed as strong determinants of care giving or time-help. Also, the associations between geographical distance and care giving or time-help are very strong. The findings of the multivariate analyses support the claim that co-residence complements child-to-parent financial transfers, care giving, and time-help when other socio-demographic characteristics and economic resource variables are controlled. Interdependence between child-to-parent financial transfers and care giving or time-help was not found to be statistically significant when controlling for other predictor variables. Finally, care giving and time-help are positively related: respondents who provide care for their parents are more likely to give time-help than those who do not.

Book excerpt: Trust is generally recognised as a reciprocal process between two parties leading to mutually beneficial outcomes and is critical to the success of organisations. However, theoretical detail on trust reciprocity is sparse and the examination of both parties in a trust relationship is uncommon in empirical studies. Ignoring this relational context can lead to an incomplete understanding of the nature of interpersonal trust, including the reciprocal patterns of influence, trust change over time, and the impact of trust incongruence within a dyad. Drawing on social exchange theory and interdependence theory, this study carries out a longitudinal examination of 230 dyadic workplace relationships involving five waves of data. Structural equation modelling examines three key areas. First, the actor-partner interdependence model provides evidence for reciprocal influences between the two parties. These results highlight that the more relational aspects of trustworthiness (benevolence) reciprocally influence the more affective forms of trust (disclosure), and that the more cognitive forms of trust (reliance) reciprocally influence interpersonal helping. Second, latent growth modelling shows that trust (reliance) is relatively stable whereas trust (disclosure) shows more change over time. Third, moderation analysis demonstrates that the impact of dyadic trust incongruence is detrimental to dyadic helping behaviours only when reliance forms of trust are unbalanced. The results confirm that trust is fundamentally a reciprocal and dynamic phenomenon and highlight different patterns of influence for reliance and disclosure forms of trust within work relationships.
