Book Personal Relationships of Dependence and Interdependence in Law

Download or read book Personal Relationships of Dependence and Interdependence in Law written by Law Commission of Canada and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac cell biology has come of age. Recognition of activated or modified signalling molecules by specific antibodies, new selective inhibitors, and fluorescent fusion tags are but a few of the tools used to dissect signalling pathways and cross-talk mechanisms that may eventually allow rational drug design. Understanding the regulation of cardiac hypertrophy in all its complexity remains a fundamental goal of cardiac research. Since the advancement of adenovirally mediated gene transfer, transfection efficiency is no longer a limiting factor in the study of cardiomyocytes. A limiting factor in considering cell transplantion as a strategy to repair the damaged heart is cell availability at the right time. Cardiac gap junctions, intercellular communication channels that allow electrical and metabolic coupling and play an important role in arrhythmogenesis are now understood to be exquisite sensors of cardiac change. The reports in this volume include elegant studies that made use of cutting edge technological advances and many specialized reagents to address these issues.

  • ISBN : 1603586482
  • Pages : 658 pages

Download or read book Lean Logic written by David Fleming and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lean Logic is David Fleming's masterpiece, the product of more than thirty years' work and a testament to the creative brilliance of one of Britain's most important intellectuals. A dictionary unlike any other, it leads readers through Fleming's stimulating exploration of fields as diverse as culture, history, science, art, logic, ethics, myth, economics, and anthropology, being made up of four hundred and four engaging essay-entries covering topics such as Boredom, Community, Debt, Growth, Harmless Lunatics, Land, Lean Thinking, Nanotechnology, Play, Religion, Spirit, Trust, and Utopia. The threads running through every entry are Fleming's deft and original analysis of how our present market-based economy is destroying the very foundations--ecological, economic, and cultural-- on which it depends, and his core focus: a compelling, grounded vision for a cohesive society that might weather the consequences. A society that provides a satisfying, culturally-rich context for lives well lived, in an economy not reliant on the impossible promise of eternal economic growth. A society worth living in. Worth fighting for. Worth contributing to. The beauty of the dictionary format is that it allows Fleming to draw connections without detracting from his in-depth exploration of each topic. Each entry carries intriguing links to other entries, inviting the enchanted reader to break free of the imposed order of a conventional book, starting where she will and following the links in the order of her choosing. In combination with Fleming's refreshing writing style and good-natured humor, it also creates a book perfectly suited to dipping in and out. The decades Fleming spent honing his life's work are evident in the lightness and mastery with which Lean Logic draws on an incredible wealth of cultural and historical learning--from Whitman to Whitefield, Dickens to Daly, Kropotkin to Kafka, Keats to Kuhn, Oakeshott to Ostrom, Jung to Jensen, Machiavelli to Mumford, Mauss to Mandelbrot, Leopold to Lakatos, Polanyi to Putnam, Nietzsche to Næss, Keynes to Kumar, Scruton to Shiva, Thoreau to Toynbee, Rabelais to Rogers, Shakespeare to Schumacher, Locke to Lovelock, Homer to Homer-Dixon--in demonstrating that many of the principles it commends have a track-record of success long pre-dating our current society. Fleming acknowledges, with honesty, the challenges ahead, but rather than inducing despair, Lean Logic is rare in its ability to inspire optimism in the creativity and intelligence of humans to nurse our ecology back to health; to rediscover the importance of place and play, of reciprocity and resilience, and of community and culture. ------ Recognizing that Lean Logic's sheer size and unusual structure could be daunting, Fleming's long-time collaborator Shaun Chamberlin has also selected and edited one of the potential pathways through the dictionary to create a second, stand-alone volume, Surviving the Future: Culture, Carnival and Capital in the Aftermath of the Market Economy. The content, rare insights, and uniquely enjoyable writing style remain Fleming's, but presented at a more accessible paperback-length and in conventional read-it-front-to-back format.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in the history of social psychology, we have a handbook on the history of social psychology. In it, leading luminaries in the field present their take on how research in their own domains has unfolded, on the scientists whose impact shaped the research agendas in the different areas of social psychology, and on events, institutions and publications that were pivotal in determining the field’s history. Social psychology’s numerous subfields now boast a rich historical heritage of their own, which demands special attention. The Handbook recounts the intriguing and often surprising lessons that the tale of social psychology’s remarkable ascendance has to offer. The historical diversity is the hallmark of the present handbook reflecting each of this field’s domains unique evolution. Collectively, the contributions put a conceptual mirror to our field and weave the intricate tapestry of people, dynamics and events whose workings combined to produce what the vibrant discipline of social psychology is today. They allow the contemporary student, scholar and instructor to explore the historical development of this important field, provide insight into its enduring aims and allow them to transcend the vicissitudes of the zeitgeist and fads of the moment. The Handbook of the History of Social Psychology provides an essential resource for any social psychologist’s collection.

Book Financial Reciprocity and Elder Care

Download or read book Financial Reciprocity and Elder Care written by Sun-Kang Koh and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of parent-to-child financial transfers and economic resources on financial transfers, co-residence, care giving, and time help as multiple, interdependent transfers from middle-aged adult children to their elderly parents. Analyzing data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, which provides long-term observations of financial reciprocity and recent reports about elder care, the current study finds strong positive effects of prior parent-to-child financial transfers in the models of care giving and time-help, which indicates the importance of reciprocity. Co-residence is positively related to past parent-to-child financial transfers; however, the effect becomes weak when other control variables are added. In terms of determinants of resource transfers, the results of multivariate logistic regression analyses suggest that the economic resources of parents and adult children are strong determinants of child-to-parent financial resource transfer when parent-to-child financial transfers and the socio-demographic characteristics of parents and adult children are controlled for. Controlling for child-to-parent financial transfers, economic resources of the parents and adult children, and other characteristics of the parents and children, adult children's decisions of co-residence are responsive to the parents' needs (surviving status, age, and health) and several characteristics of adult children (marital status, employment status, and the number of living siblings). Parent-to-child financial transfers are a strong determinant of care giving and time help to elderly parents after controlling for economic resources and socio-demographic characteristics of parents and adult children. Socio-demographic characteristics of parents and respondents were observed as strong determinants of care giving or time-help. Also, the associations between geographical distance and care giving or time-help are very strong. The findings of the multivariate analyses support the claim that co-residence complements child-to-parent financial transfers, care giving, and time-help when other socio-demographic characteristics and economic resource variables are controlled. Interdependence between child-to-parent financial transfers and care giving or time-help was not found to be statistically significant when controlling for other predictor variables. Finally, care giving and time-help are positively related: respondents who provide care for their parents are more likely to give time-help than those who do not.

Book Forms of Trust Reciprocity and Change in Established Relationships

Download or read book Forms of Trust Reciprocity and Change in Established Relationships written by Colette Real and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trust is generally recognised as a reciprocal process between two parties leading to mutually beneficial outcomes and is critical to the success of organisations. However, theoretical detail on trust reciprocity is sparse and the examination of both parties in a trust relationship is uncommon in empirical studies. Ignoring this relational context can lead to an incomplete understanding of the nature of interpersonal trust, including the reciprocal patterns of influence, trust change over time, and the impact of trust incongruence within a dyad. Drawing on social exchange theory and interdependence theory, this study carries out a longitudinal examination of 230 dyadic workplace relationships involving five waves of data. Structural equation modelling examines three key areas. First, the actor-partner interdependence model provides evidence for reciprocal influences between the two parties. These results highlight that the more relational aspects of trustworthiness (benevolence) reciprocally influence the more affective forms of trust (disclosure), and that the more cognitive forms of trust (reliance) reciprocally influence interpersonal helping. Second, latent growth modelling shows that trust (reliance) is relatively stable whereas trust (disclosure) shows more change over time. Third, moderation analysis demonstrates that the impact of dyadic trust incongruence is detrimental to dyadic helping behaviours only when reliance forms of trust are unbalanced. The results confirm that trust is fundamentally a reciprocal and dynamic phenomenon and highlight different patterns of influence for reliance and disclosure forms of trust within work relationships.
