The discussion draws on research undertaken in the UK and Southern India into the extent to which having the self-perception of being valued in the world is important to older people in receipt of care support and whether, in their experience, this is recognized by others. The author presents an analysis of theoretical insights from leading thinkers across a broad range of literature and from several disciplines, including social theory, social work, philosophy, and gerontology. The author also gives voice to the perspectives of those dependent older people not often heard because of marginalizing and disempowering processes that contribute to their having little opportunity to be heard in the first place. The emphasis of this book is on aspiration to a meaningful life and continuing personal growth as offering a challenge to dominant discourses the equate old age with decline.

Book excerpt: In this phenomenologically grounded study I draw on PCS analysis (Thompson, 2011a) to explore the relationship between how individuals make sense of their experience of reciprocity while in receipt of formal eldercare delivery, prevailing discourses about old age and dependency, and the significance attached to age as a social division. In addition to applying the PCS framework in an innovative way, I propose a further innovative analytical framework to highlight that meaning making around reciprocity is informed by the significance of space, time, discourse and institutionalised patterns of power. Findings that emerged from the narratives of elders in the UK and India reflect that, while older people dependent on formal care may desire opportunities to give as well as receive, opportunities for giving tend not to be facilitated, and the dimension of future aspiration tends to be neglected. In exploring the sociological and phenomenological implications of the findings, and raising the profile of reciprocity in the theorising of eldercare, I highlight their positive potential to contribute to a better understanding of the spiritual well-being of individuals dependent on formal care and to provide a challenge to deficit models in the theorising of dependency in old age by emphasising a future orientation.

Book excerpt: The many significant technological and medical advances of the 21st century cannot overcome the escalating risk posed to older adults by such stressors as pain, weakness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, memory and other cognitive deficits, hearing loss, visual impairment, isolation, marginalization, and physical and mental illness. In order to overcome these and other challenges, and to maintain as high a quality of life as possible, older adults and the professionals who treat them need to promote and develop the capacity for resilience, which is innate in all of us to some degree. The purpose of this book is to provide the current scientific theory, clinical guidelines, and real-world interventions with regard to resilience as a clinical tool. To that end, the book addresses such issues as concepts and operationalization of resilience; relevance of resilience to successful aging; impact of personality and genetics on resilience; relationship between resilience and motivation; relationship between resilience and survival; promoting resilience in long-term care; and the lifespan approach to resilience. By addressing ways in which the hypothetical and theoretical concepts of resilience can be applied in geriatric practice, Resilience in Aging provides inroads to the current knowledge and practice of resilience from the perspectives of physiology, psychology, culture, creativity, and economics. In addition, the book considers the impact of resilience on critical aspects of life for older adults such as policy issues (e.g., nursing home policies, Medicare guidelines), health and wellness, motivation, spirituality, and survival. Following these discussions, the book focuses on interventions that increase resilience. The intervention chapters include case studies and are intended to be useful at the clinical level. The book concludes with a discussion of future directions in optimizing resilience in the elderly and the importance of a lifespan approach to aging.
