Book Recipes for Reminiscence

Download or read book Recipes for Reminiscence written by Danny Walsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by the author of The Activity and Reminiscence Yearbook, is all about exploring our very close relationship with food and its preparation. Because food plays such an important and pleasurable part in our lives it triggers many memories. Linking the activities and reminiscence ideas here with recipes will further enhance the recollection and allow us to re-experience the tastes of the past. Each chapter includes 'old' recipes for foods and drinks throughout the year and across the decades, and around these have been woven activities, quizzes and reminiscence material including changes over the years with respect to the food itself, kitchens, cooking, utensils, cookers, food styles, food fads in different decades, TV cooks, school meals, 'making do', snacks and so on. There are multiple recipes for each week of the year paired to a reminiscence theme and an activity, presented in a weekly format that activity organisers prefer. Many of the ideas and activities can be undertaken either on a one-to-one basis or as part of a group activity schedule. Group experiences tend to enhance the pleasure and allow for more discussion and sharing of memories, as well as acting as a social get-together. You can use it as a weekly schedule or just dip in and out of it at will. The book includes: weekly recipes; reminiscence principles; and activities and information for weeks 1 to 52. It is a must-have book which shows how food can be used successfully as a vehicle for social inclusion and normalisation in institutional settings.

Download or read book Recipes for Respect written by Rafia Zafar and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food studies, once trendy, has settled into the public arena. In the academy, scholarship on food and literary culture constitutes a growing river within literary and cultural studies, but writing on African American food and dining remains a tributary. Recipes for Respect bridges this gap, illuminating the role of foodways in African American culture as well as the contributions of Black cooks and chefs to what has been considered the mainstream. Beginning in the early nineteenth century and continuing nearly to the present day, African Americans have often been stereotyped as illiterate kitchen geniuses. Rafia Zafar addresses this error, highlighting the long history of accomplished African Americans within our culinary traditions, as well as the literary and entrepreneurial strategies for civil rights and respectability woven into the written records of dining, cooking, and serving. Whether revealed in cookbooks or fiction, memoirs or hotel-keeping manuals, agricultural extension bulletins or library collections, foodways knowledge sustained Black strategies for self-reliance and dignity, the preservation of historical memory, and civil rights and social mobility. If, to follow Mary Douglas's dictum, food is a field of action-that is, a venue for social intimacy, exchange, or aggression-African American writing about foodways constitutes an underappreciated critique of the racialized social and intellectual spaces of the United States.

Book excerpt: A lot has changed since Towpath first rolled up its shutters 10 years ago on the Regent’s Canal in Hackney and everything but the toasted cheese sandwich was cooked from home across the bridge. And a lot hasn’t. It is still as much a social experiment as a unique and beloved eatery. What happens when seasonality means you close every year in November, because England’s cold, dark winters are simply inhospitable to hospitality from a little perch beside a shallow, manmade waterway that snakes through East London? What if you don’t offer takeaway coffees in the hopes that people will decide to stay awhile and watch the coots skittering across the water? If you don’t have a phone or a website, because you’d rather people just show up like (hungry) kids at a playground? Towpath is a collection of recipes, stories and photographs capturing the vibrant cafe’s food, community and place throughout the arc of its season – beginning just before the first breath of spring, through the dog days of summer and culminating – with fireworks! – before its painted shutters are rolled down again for winter.

Book Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine

Download or read book Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine written by Norma Jean Darden and published by Fawcett. This book was released on 1981-04-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now charmingly repackaged for its twenty-fifth anniversary: the beloved tribute to a one-of-a-kind family, as told through soul-satisfying memories and recipes. A classic collection of home cooking, remedies, and reminiscences, Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine evolved from a family history project undertaken by sisters Norma Jean and Carole Darden in the late 1970s. Traveling through the Deep South and to Virginia and Ohio, they diligently collected the recipes, rare photographs, and rituals of their family's rich African American heritage. The result was a treasure trove that has only become more valuable as time goes by. Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine introduces readers to remarkable figures, such as their grandfather Papa Darden, a former slave who raised thirteen children and sold his renowned strawberry wine for five cents a glass in his general store. Eighty-something Aunt Lil shares her tried-and-true homemade beauty cream, and ninety-something Aunt Maude recalls George Washington Carver's favorite peanut butter ice cream. There are herbal cures, beauty tips, and cold remedies, but the centerpiece of this special book is a feast of satisfying family-style recipes. Fruited Honey Chicken, Red Snapper with Shrimp and Raisin Stuffing, Rose Petal Jelly--and everyone's favorite--Pecan Brittle are just a few of the treats readers have craved. Heartwarming, fascinating, and appetite-pleasing, Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine is poised for a new quarter-century of devoted readers.
