Pour connaître l’emploi, il faut décrire à la fois l’activité et la division du travail dans une société. Mais comment prévoir la division du travail, alors qu’elle est le produit de l’organisation sociale ou des formes de la pensée et de l’éducation ; qu’elle résulte du jeu des pouvoirs, en même temps que de l’évolution des sciences et de la technologie ? Comment prévoir les effets qu’à son tour elle est capable d’avoir sur les conditions matérielles et sociales de la production, l’importance des réactions qui peuvent en résulter, et les conséquences sur le choix de nouveaux objectifs pour le système de formation ? La recherche d’une méthodologie — pour l’analyse des relations entre la formation et l’emploi — n’est ainsi, en définitive, qu’une manière de mettre en évidence les difficultés scientifiques à surmonter, pour parvenir à une meilleure maîtrise du développement de notre société.

Pollak Chairman of the International Program Committee Bell Laboratories Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA The Fourth International Congress on Mathematics Education was held in Berkeley, California, USA, August 10-16, 1980. Previous Congresses were held in Lyons in 1969, Exeter in 1972, and Karlsruhe in 1976. Attendance at Berkeley was about 1800 full and 500 associate members from about 90 countries; at least half of these come from outside of North America. About 450 persons participated in the program either as speakers or as presiders; approximately 40 percent of these came from the U.S. or Canada. There were four plenary addresses; they were delivered by Hans Freudenthal on major problems of mathematics education, Hermina Sinclair on the relationship between the learning of language and of mathematics, Seymour Papert on the computer as carrier of mathematical culture, and Hua Loo-Keng on popularising and applying mathematical methods. Gearge Polya was the honorary president of the Congress; illness prevented his planned attendence but he sent a brief presentation entitled, "Mathematics Improves the Mind". There was a full program of speakers, panelists, debates, miniconferences, and meetings of working and study groups. In addition, 18 major projects from around the world were invited to make presentations, and various groups representing special areas of concern had the opportunity to meet and to plan their future activities.

Il s'appuie essentiellement sur les résultats de l'enquête Génération 98 du Céreq (Centre d'études et de recherches sur les qualifications), qui permettent de repérer les caractéristiques des emplois occupés au cours des premières années de vie active. La diversité des éclairages et des matériaux réunis par les auteurs de cet ouvrage - membres du Céreq et d'autres équipes de recherche - permet de mieux comprendre les relations entre formations et emplois et, ce faisant, peut contribuer à modifier les représentations, à donner de nouveaux repères à tous les acteurs concernés par cette question d'une constante actualité. La première partie montre comment les acteurs - système éducatif, responsables d'entreprises, décideurs nationaux et régionaux - se positionnent par rapport à cette question. La deuxième montre qu'une " bonne correspondance " entre formation initiale et emplois occupés, tant en termes de niveaux que de spécialités, n'est pas aujourd'hui la règle en France, même pour les formations professionnelles. La troisième analyse comment la volonté d'ajuster les formations aux emplois se heurte aux stratégies des différents acteurs. Enfin, la dernière partie met l'accent sur les phénomènes de " déclassement ".
