Download or read book Receptions and Re visitings written by Roger C. Richardson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shorter pieces reproduced here are drawn chiefly from the author’s large output of review articles and reviews of the last fifteen years. Though there is some shared subject matter with R.C. Richardson’s new collection on Social History, Local History and Historiography (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2011), this volume significantly enlarges the range of the other in addressing, for example, issues relating to politics and political thinking, London, gendered worlds, servants and servant-keeping, the writing of diaries, and early modern reading habits. Many of the essays have a pronounced historiographical dimension, and a number of them focus on the period of the English Revolution. The two final essays – on ‘Epic Historiography’ and ‘Historians, History Brokers and English Historical Culture’ – extend the coverage to modern times. General readers, not just specialists, will find this book a helpful and accessibly written guide to the subjects under review.

Book Reception in the Greco Roman World

Download or read book Reception in the Greco Roman World written by Marco Fantuzzi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The embrace of reception theory has been one of the hallmarks of classical studies over the last 30 years. This volume builds on the critical insights thereby gained to consider reception within Greek antiquity itself. Reception, like 'intertextuality', places the emphasis on the creative agency of the later 'receiver' rather than the unilateral influence of the 'transmitter'. It additionally shines the spotlight on transitions into new cultural contexts, on materiality, on intermediality and on the body. Essays range chronologically from the archaic to the Byzantine periods and address literature (prose and verse; Greek, Roman and Greco-Jewish), philosophy, papyri, inscriptions and dance. Whereas the conventional image of ancient Greek classicism is one of quiet reverence, this book, by contrast, demonstrates how rumbustious, heterogeneous and combative it could be.

Book Xenophon s Anabasis and its Reception

Download or read book Xenophon s Anabasis and its Reception written by Tim Rood and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the first large-scale collaborative reflection on Xenophon’s Anabasis, gathering experts on Greek historiography and Xenophon. It is structured in three sections: the first section provides a linear reading of the Anabasis through chapters on select episodes (from Book 1 through Book 7), including the opening, Cyrus’ characterisation, the meeting of Socrates and Xenophon, Xenophon’s leadership, the marches through Armenia and along the Black Sea coast and the service under Seuthes in Thrace. The second section offers an in-depth exploration of hitherto overlooked recurrent themes. Based on new approaches and scholarly trends, it focuses on topics such as the concept of friendship, the speeches of characters other than Xenophon, the suffering of the human body, the role of rumour and misrepresentation, and the depiction of emotions. The third section offers a more thorough investigation of the manifold reception of this work (in Antiquity, Byzantium, Renaissance, modern period, in cinema studies and illustrations). Finally, in acknowledgement of the Anabasis’ long history as a pedagogical text, the volume contains an envoi on the importance and benefits of teaching Xenophon and the Anabasis, more specifically.

Book Ancient Comedy and Reception

Download or read book Ancient Comedy and Reception written by S. Douglas Olson and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 1098 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging collection, consisting of 50 essays by leading international scholars in a variety of fields, provides an overview of the reception history of a major literary genre from Greco-Roman antiquity to the present day. Section I considers how the 5th- and 4th-century Athenian comic poets defined themselves and their plays, especially in relation to other major literary forms. It then moves on to the Roman world and to the reception of Greek comedy there in art and literature. Section II deals with the European reception of Greek and Roman comedy in the Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern periods, and with the European stage tradition of comic theater more generally. Section III treats the handling of Greco-Roman comedy in the modern world, with attention not just to literary translations and stage-productions, but to more modern media such as radio and film. The collection will be of interest to students of ancient comedy as well as to all those concerned with how literary and theatrical traditions are passed on from one time and place to another, and adapted to meet local conditions and concerns.

Book The Politics and Reception of Rabindranath Tagore s Drama

Download or read book The Politics and Reception of Rabindranath Tagore s Drama written by Arnab Bhattacharya and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume to focus specifically on Rabindranath Tagore’s dramatic literature, visiting translations and adaptations of Tagore’s drama, and cross-cultural encounters in his works. As Asia’s first Nobel Laureate, Tagore’s highly original plays occupy a central position in the Indian theatrescape. Tagore experimented with dance, music, dance drama, and plays, exploring concepts of environment, education, gender and women, postcolonial encounters, romantic idealism, and universality. Tagore’s drama plays a generous host to experimentations with new performance modes, like the writing and staging of an all-women play on stage for the first time, or the use of cross-cultural styles such as Manipuri dance, Thai craft in stage design, or the Baul singing styles. This book is an exciting re-exploration of Tagore’s plays, visiting issues such as his contribution to Indian drama, drama and environment, feminist readings, postcolonial engagements, cross-cultural encounters, drama as performance, translational and adaptation modes, the non-translated or the non-translatable Tagore drama, Tagore drama in the 21st century, and Indian film. The volume serves as a wide-ranging and up-to-date resource on the criticism of Tagore drama, and will appeal to a range of Theatre and Performance scholars as well as those interested in Indian theatre, literature, and film.

Book The Historian s Awakening

Download or read book The Historian s Awakening written by Bernard Koloski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Historian's Awakening is a full commentary on the text (included) that provides social and cultural history context, discussions of the author and her times as well as valuable insight into historical forces that shaped people's lives. Kate Chopin's classic novel about a modern woman who desires to break free from tradition endures, in part, due to its critical and thought-provoking themes about society. While many editions of Kate Chopin's classic novel are in print, only The Historian's Awakening deals exclusively with the 19th-century social and cultural environment from which the novel emerged. In The Awakening, Kate Chopin portrays a modern woman who seeks autonomy, subjected to intense social and cultural conventions that first draw her out of her lifelong solitude but ultimately leave her feeling even more alone. This newly annotated edition focuses on how 19th-century ideas about class, gender, ethnicity, and modernity affect a courageous woman's life. Challenging prevailing scholarship by situating the novel within a rich historical context, it examines the social and cultural realities of the 1890s and explains how, in the novel, these forces combine with an emerging modernity to liberate and unsettle its female protagonist.

Book Reception Studies and Adaptation

Download or read book Reception Studies and Adaptation written by Giulia Magazzù and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering compelling insights into the Italian adaptation of diversified English products, this volume is addressed to both scholars and students wishing to delve into the field of reception studies. It focuses on literary, multimedia and audiovisual translation due to the conviction that the modalities through which the imprinting of “Italianness” is marked upon several English hypertexts are still worth investigating today. The contributions here highlight how some choices may, in some instances, alter the meaning as much as the success of some English aesthetic texts, by directing, if not possibly undermining, the audience reception.
