Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Trends in the Asian Forest Products Trade and Their Impact on Alaska The manufacturing of value-added forest products has been shifting to China since the late 1990s. China's cheap labor and capital costs have given Chinese manufacturers an extreme advantage compared to their higher cost competitors (cao et a1. China imports large quantities of logs to supply its domestic processors. In 2007, China's two largest forest product suppliers were Russia, with a -percent share, and the United States, with a -percent share of China's total imports (harmonized code 4400) (gti The logs are milled in China and the finished forest products are then exported. In 2007, China's two largest forest product export markets were the United States, with a 26-percent share, and Japan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes patterns of forest products trade between Asia and Alaska. Secondary data were collected and analyzed to identify Alaska forest product trading partners and the species used. Some of the many trends occurring in the Asian forest products industry include the shift from solid wood products to engineered wood products, the evolution of China as "the factory to the world" where low-cost labor enables manufacturers to produce price-competitive wood products that are shipped to markets throughout the globe, and the entry of Russia, Europe, Asia, and Southern Hemisphere nations into the market with both log and lumber products. In spite of the global economic downturn, forest products exports from several suppliers are increasing. Analysis of U.S. trade data indicates that exports of spruce (Picea spp.), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), and western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don) logs remain strong. Likewise, Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and western redcedar lumber exports are also improving. Douglas-fir lumber exports to Japan and western hemlock lumber exports to South Korea showed strong recent gains. The outlook for continued increases in forest products exports to Asia is strong, and the authors recommend a coordinated Alaska forest products market effort targeting China, South Korea, and Japan

Book Trends in Global Shipping and the Impact on Alaska s Forest Products

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, there has been a strong forest products trade between Alaska and Asia. This trade relationship has developed owing to Alaska's proximity to Asia and, in the past, an abundance of high-quality timber. Although forest products markets in North America remain soft, markets in Asia are growing. However, to benefit from Asia's growing forest products market, it is important to understand the concepts of global shipping including containerization, intermodal transport, non vessel operating common carriers, and freight forwarders. One key development that could have a major impact on Alaska's forest products trade is the opening of the Port of Prince Rupert (British Columbia) in 2007. The Port of Prince Rupert ships lumber, logs, and wood pellets to Asia and is much closer to southeast Alaska than are the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. The Prince Rupert port is also 1 day closer to Asia. Despite Prince Rupert's proximity to Alaska, however, there is still no regularly scheduled barge service between the Port of Prince Rupert and southeast Alaska. Potential connections that may develop are examined in this paper. This paper also examines the changing concepts of global shipping and how they affect Alaska's forest products industry.

Download or read book Postwar Trends in U S Forest Products Trade written by Roger A. Sedjo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of World War II, the United States had become well integrated into the world markets for forest products. No longer can domestic prices of forest products be viewed as being wholly determined by domestic demand and supply, nor even by North American supply and demand, but must be viewed in a worldwide context. Originally published in 1980, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the nature of global forestry, particularly as it pertains to international trade flows of forest products, and analyses the role of the United States in a global context. This is a valuable resource for any student or researcher interested in environmental studies, global trade relations, and foreign market development.

Book excerpt: Since the closing of the pulp mills in Sitka and Ketchikan, the relatively small sawmills in southeast Alaska have been producing factory and shop lumber and specialty products (Brackley and Haynes 2008) that require a supply of old-growth timber. Dimension lumber is a byproduct of these mills. One of the major issues facing southeast Alaska's sawmills is securing a continuing supply of timber. According to a recent sawmill processing-capacity study, southeast Alaska's forest products industry was estimated to be using approximately 13 percent of mill capacity (Brackley and Crone 2009). This report shows that there is ample processing capacity to increase supply to Asian markets. However, there needs to be a steady timber source to supply southeast Alaska's mills. Demand for Asia's forest products is growing faster than that for North America's, presenting an opportunity to use Alaska's excess mill capacity, if the producers recognize the requirements of the Asian markets.

Book Nontimber Forest Product Opportunities in Alaska

Download or read book Nontimber Forest Product Opportunities in Alaska written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nontimber forest products from southern Alaska (also called special forest products) have been used for millennia as resources vital to the livelihoods and culture of Alaska Natives and, more recently, as subsistence resources for the welfare of all citizens. Many of these products are now being sold, and Alaskans seek additional income opportunities through sustainable harvest and manufacture of such forest resources. We discuss the unique legal, regulatory, land tenure, geographic, vegetation, and climatic context that southern Alaska presents for marketing nontimber forest products; summarize the various species and types of products being harvested; and consider the marketing challenges and opportunities new entrepreneurs will encounter. The information and resources we provide are intended to enhance income opportunities for all Alaskans, while sustaining the organisms harvested, respecting traditional activities, and ensuring equitable access to resources.
