Book Statistics in Social Science Population Dynamics Education and Social Well Being UUM Press

Download or read book Statistics in Social Science Population Dynamics Education and Social Well Being UUM Press written by Lau Wee Yeap and published by UUM Press. This book was released on 2023-03-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics in Social Science encompasses studies on population dynamics, education and social well-being. The chapters are arranged to enable readers to quickly identify their interests while looking beyond the sub-themes and exploring how these studies will impact society, industry, or policymakers. In the past few decades, Malaysia has undergone rapid industrialisation and urbanisation. These changes have brought forward many social and educational issues that need to be addressed by the authorities and communities. In addition to raising awareness of societal issues, this book provides various statistical methods to investigate them. Readers will be able to learn and appreciate the application of such techniques in their respective fields. In the first part, this book explores issues like life satisfaction of ageing populations, world population growth and distribution, population redistribution and urbanisation in Malaysia. In the second part, the book examines the issues of the rural-urban gap and gender differences in Mathematics and Science achievement, gender differences in education and work among young Malaysians, the employability model of science graduates, and the relationship between physical activity and happiness are explored. Undoubtedly, some issues raised cannot be solved in the short run, for example, the achievement of learning Mathematics and Science. However, policy intervention is needed to increase the effectiveness of learning these two subjects in school. Thus, Malaysia can continue to boost its long-term competitiveness and move in its trajectory to achieve the vision of advanced civil society (Malaysia Madani).

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design research is grounded on the iterative Triangulation Methodology (ITM), where theoretical, development and empirical research approaches are triangulated to accomplish the design research objectives. Constructing and associating research gaps, questions, objectives, methods and outcomes are imperative in a research. However, not linking all these and choosing the wrong and poorly designed methods are common especially among inexperienced researchers and students. Therefore, researchers should practice strategies in identifying the right methods to collect data or perform experiment that can meet the predefined objectives and determined research problems. This book is aimed at providing some of the likely strategies. It contains personalized strategies and examples that are useful for starting a design research in any field particularly in software and application development. The examples described are real studies that we conducted together with our research team members.

Book Models Simulations and Representations

Download or read book Models Simulations and Representations written by Paul Humphreys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scientific models and simulations differ in numerous ways, they are similar in so far as they are posing essentially philosophical problems about the nature of representation. This collection is designed to bring together some of the best work on the nature of representation being done by both established senior philosophers of science and younger researchers. Most of the pieces, while appealing to existing traditions of scientific representation, explore new types of questions, such as: how understanding can be developed within computational science; how the format of representations matters for their use, be it for the purpose of research or education; how the concepts of emergence and supervenience can be further analyzed by taking into account computational science; or how the emphasis upon tractability--a particularly important issue in computational science--sheds new light on the philosophical analysis of scientific reasoning.

Book Integrating High Impact Educational Practices for Malaysia A Handbook of Reflective Practice and Professional Development UUM Press

Download or read book Integrating High Impact Educational Practices for Malaysia A Handbook of Reflective Practice and Professional Development UUM Press written by Rosna Awang-Hashim and published by UUM Press. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Impact Educational Practices (HIEPs) have been extensively tested as compelling pedagogies for university students from an array of backgrounds, especially for the underprepared, and those with limited opportunity for high-impact learning experiences. This handbook is written with our firm belief that while higher education practitioners around the world are focused on improving student outcomes, not many have access to a better understanding of the conceptual foundations, empirical research and best practices in student engagement and high impact educational pedagogies. In this book, we unpack the essential conceptual constructs around the notions of student engagement to encourage readers to purposefully add HIEPs to their pedagogical repertoire and engage in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) practices.

Book Noncommutative Geometry and Optimal Transport

Download or read book Noncommutative Geometry and Optimal Transport written by Pierre Martinetti and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distance formula in noncommutative geometry was introduced by Connes at the end of the 1980s. It is a generalization of Riemannian geodesic distance that makes sense in a noncommutative setting, and provides an original tool to study the geometry of the space of states on an algebra. It also has an intriguing echo in physics, for it yields a metric interpretation for the Higgs field. In the 1990s, Rieffel noticed that this distance is a noncommutative version of the Wasserstein distance of order 1 in the theory of optimal transport. More exactly, this is a noncommutative generalization of Kantorovich dual formula of the Wasserstein distance. Connes distance thus offers an unexpected connection between an ancient mathematical problem and the most recent discovery in high energy physics. The meaning of this connection is far from clear. Yet, Rieffel's observation suggests that Connes distance may provide an interesting starting point for a theory of optimal transport in noncommutative geometry. This volume contains several review papers that will give the reader an extensive introduction to the metric aspect of noncommutative geometry and its possible interpretation as a Wasserstein distance on a quantum space, as well as several topic papers.

Download or read book Approximating Perfection written by Leonid P. Lebedev and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book for those who enjoy thinking about how and why Nature can be described using mathematical tools. Approximating Perfection considers the background behind mechanics as well as the mathematical ideas that play key roles in mechanical applications. Concentrating on the models of applied mechanics, the book engages the reader in the types of nuts-and-bolts considerations that are normally avoided in formal engineering courses: how and why models remain imperfect, and the factors that motivated their development. The opening chapter reviews and reconsiders the basics of calculus from a fully applied point of view; subsequent chapters explore selected topics from solid mechanics, hydrodynamics, and the natural sciences. Emphasis is placed on the logic that underlies modeling in mechanics and the many surprising parallels that exist between seemingly diverse areas. The mathematical demands on the reader are kept to a minimum, so the book will appeal to a wide technical audience.
