Book Recent Studies of Vibrational Excitation of N2 by Electron Impact

Download or read book Recent Studies of Vibrational Excitation of N2 by Electron Impact written by G. J. Schulz and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibrational excitation of nitrogen molecules by electron impact was studied by analyzing electrons at an angle of 72 degrees. The vibra tional excitation in N2 is interpreted as a process involving a compound state of the nitrogen molecule. The lifetime of the compound state is comparable to the vibration time, i.e., of the order of 10 to the -14th power sec. (Author).

Book Electron Impact Excitation of N2 O2 O1 and Upper Atmospheric Diagnostics with Electron Beam Fluorescence Probes

Download or read book Electron Impact Excitation of N2 O2 O1 and Upper Atmospheric Diagnostics with Electron Beam Fluorescence Probes written by Anthony A. Haasz and published by Institute for Aerospace Studies, University of Toronto. This book was released on 1973 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristic emission spectra in the 2000A to 6000A wavelength range, induced by 0.6-3 keV energy electrons, were obtained for molecular nitrogen, molecular oxygen and atomic oxygen. To study the atomic oxygen fluorescence, ground state O atoms were produced in the absence of O2 molecules by the N + NO to N2 + O titration reaction. Absolute excitation cross sections were obtained for some of the prominent spectral features of N2, O2 and O; the emissions were selected on the basis of their applicability for upper atmospheric diagnostics with electron beam fluorescence probes. In parallel with the laboratory investigations of the electron beam induced fluorescence in atmospheric gases, an electron beam fluorescence probe (EBFP) has been developed for rocket flight applications in the 80 to 150 km altitude range. The EBFP is capable of measuring vibrational and rotational temperatures as well as species concentrations in the upper atmosphere. The instrument employs a 2.5 keV, 4 mA electron beam to induce fluorescence in the ambient gas of the atmosphere. (Modified author abstract).

Book Studies of Infrared Aurorae

Download or read book Studies of Infrared Aurorae written by Jane L. Fox and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smithsonian researchers began their studies of infrared aurorae was studied by computing the rate of vibrational excitation of N2 by the impact of energetic electrons. Althrough the radiative lifetime of vibrationally excited N2 is long, infrared emission may appear as a result of V-V transfer from N2 to molecules which may radiate, such as CO2 and NO. A complete set of cross sections was compiled for electron impact excitation of vibrational levels v = 1 through v = 6 for the impact of electrons with energies from 2 to 200 eV. They found that for high electron energies and low fractional ionizations, about 6% of the total energy of the electron appears as vibrational excitation. Keywords: Nitrogen; Carbon Dioxide; Nitrogen Monoxide; Data analysis; Aurorae; Infrared radiation; Electron excitation.

Book CARS Measurements of Vibrational Energy Transfer in Nanosecond Pulse Electric Discharges in Nitrogen Air and Their Mixtures with Carbon Dioxide

Download or read book CARS Measurements of Vibrational Energy Transfer in Nanosecond Pulse Electric Discharges in Nitrogen Air and Their Mixtures with Carbon Dioxide written by Yi-chen Hung and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibrational relaxation of nitrogen accelerated by rapid energy transfer to CO2 is studied in the afterglow of a diffuse filament ns pulse discharge. Time-resolved N2(v=0-3) vibrational level populations and temperature are measured using broadband Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS). Rotational-translational temperature in the afterglow is inferred from partially rotationally resolved structure of N2(v=0) band. The measurements have been done in nitrogen, dry air, and their mixtures with CO2. N2 vibrational excitation in the discharge occurs by electron impact, with subsequent vibration-vibration (V-V) energy transfer within N2 vibrational manifold, vibration-translation (V-T) relaxation, and near-resonance V-V' energy transfer from N2 to CO2 asymmetric stretch vibrational mode. The results show that rapid V-V' energy transfer to CO2, followed by intramolecular energy redistribution to symmetric stretch and bending modes of CO2 and their V-T relaxation, considerably accelerate the net rate of energy thermalization and temperature rise in the afterglow. The effect of accelerated N2 vibrational relaxation may explain localized thermal perturbations detected in filamentary, ns pulse, surface dielectric barrier discharges in quiescent room air, on the time scale of several hundred microsecond, which matches the estimated vibrational relaxation time of nitrogen by water vapor at these conditions. The present results are consistent with previous CARS measurements of N2 vibrational temperature distribution in the nonequilibrium supersonic shear layer, which demonstrated that CO2 injection results in its significant reduction, thereby strongly affecting the flow field. The present results show that significant amounts of vibrational energy can be stored in nonequilibrium nitrogen and air flows and released at a desired location, using local injection of rapid “relaxer” species such as CO2 or hydrocarbons and providing significant effect on the high-speed flow, at the conditions when water vapor concentration in the flow is low (e.g. in high-altitude flight).

Book Collisional Processes Involving Atmospheric Gases

Download or read book Collisional Processes Involving Atmospheric Gases written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes research works on the following areas. (1) Measurements of cross sections for electron impact excitation into the metastable levels of argon and number densities of metastable argon atoms have been completed. We also measured the disappearance rates of the metastable atoms after the electron beam is turned off and the observed decay modes are consistent with diffusion loss. (2) Electron impact excitation of the vibrational levels of the C32u electronic state of the N2 molecule and the emissions produced by the excited N2 molecules have been studied. The relative intensities of the various (v', v") bands in the electron beam experiments are compared with those observed in a dc discharge. (3) A new novel method has been developed utilizing magneto-optically trapped atoms as targets for measuring electron scattering cross sections and applied to electron-Rb scattering. This new method has advantages over the conventional methods. (4) Further studies of cold trapped atoms have led to development of another novel technique, i.e., a new method for measuring total electron impact ionization cross section using trapped atom targets. Application to Rb shows that this new method has advantages over the crossed beam method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reports investigations which form part of a major series of theoretical and experimental studies being carried out in the Laboratory of Low-Temperature Plasma Optics at the Lebedev Physics Institute in Moscow. The papers give the results of systematic investigations of the chemical composition and of the electrical and optical properties of discharge plasmas, and also of populations of laser levels. Reliable and detailed information is given on the dissociation of carbon dioxide gas in discharges; the nature of the velocity distribution function, average energies, and densities of electrons; and populations and vibrational temperatures of molecules in cw CO and CO lasers. The material in this volume is intended for specialists in quantum electronics and low temperature plasma diagnostics.
