Book The Evolution of Galactic X Ray Binaries

Download or read book The Evolution of Galactic X Ray Binaries written by J. Truemper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea to hold a conference on the Evolution of Close-Binary X-ray sources grew in the summer of 1984. At that time we were hoping that some new results would be harvested in the months to come which would stimulate further work. We were particularly looking towards the Euro pean X-ray Observatory, EXOSAT, for new contributions. How lucky we were; quite unexpected developments took place. Just prior to the conference, quasi-periodic oscillations (now known as QPO) were discovered in three bright low-mass X-ray binaries: GX 5-1, Sco X-1, and Cyg X-2. They played an important role at the meeting. The possibility that QPOs imply a neutron star magnetic dipole field, and a neutron star rotation period in the millisecond range, received a lot of attention. This is not surprising, as it lends support to the idea, suggested earlier, that the 6-msec binary radio pulsar PSR 1953+29 evolved from a stage in which it was a bright low-mass X-ray binary. There was special interest in the possibility of white dwarf collapse into a neutron star. This is a. particularly attractive way to form the bright low-mass X-ray binaries, often referred to as galactic bulge sources. It would allow for the possibility of a very young neutron star in a very old binary system. The relatively high magnetic fields that one could infer from QPO could then be explained.

Book Accretion powered Compact Binaries

Download or read book Accretion powered Compact Binaries written by Christopher W. Mauche and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a well-edited and comprehensive survey of the current research in the field of low-mass accretion powered compact binaries, that is, binary stars containing a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole as the primary star and a Roche-lobe filling low-mass as the secondary star. These stars have reached a stage in their evolution where the transfer of mass from the giant phase onto a dwarf or sub-dwarf star demonstrates many different aspects of physics. The volume is essentially a complete analysis of these stars combining theory and observation, and covering observations of low-mass X-ray binaries and both magnetic and nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables, theories of stellar accretion, novae, and evolution of compact binaries.

Book The Symbiotic Phenomenon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joanna Mikolajewska
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400929692
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book The Symbiotic Phenomenon written by Joanna Mikolajewska and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symbiotic stars were identified spectroscopically as M giants with a very strong He II 4686 emission line. After five decades of study by many astronomers, the first internatioinal meetings devoted to symbiotics were held at the University of Colorado (Boulder) and at the Haute Provence Observatory during the Summer of 1981. These conferences emphasized exciting new results obtained by modern satellite (EINSTEIN, IUE) and ground-based observatories. Although the vast majority of the participants were already fairly sure that symbiotics are almost certainly interacting binary systems, and not extremely peculiar single stars, it was not clear exactly which types of physical processes were needed to be invoked to explain their observed behaviour. Many were even worried that it might not be possible to clearly define a class of "symbiotic stars" , and thus establish a unique model applicable to any system. Since the publication of the Haute-Provence proceedings, our understanding of the physical processes occuring in symbiotic stars (and in related objects such as cataclysmic variables and compact planetary nebulae) has greatly improved. We now speak confidently of a "symbiotic phenomenon" , in which an evolved red giant and a hot companion object (usually thought to be an accreting main sequence star or a luminous white dwarf star) happily coexist.

Book Dynamical Evolution of Dense Stellar Systems IAU S246

Download or read book Dynamical Evolution of Dense Stellar Systems IAU S246 written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-12 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dense stellar systems lie at the interface between dynamics, stellar evolution, and galaxy formation, and they provide us with an ideal laboratory to understand many different aspects of these important fields as well as to explore the interplay between them. The complete study of dense stellar systems is a very challenging task which requires the collaboration and the exchange of ideas of astronomers and physicists with observational and theoretical expertise in galactic and extra-galactic astronomy, stellar dynamics, hydrodynamics, stellar evolution, as well as knowledge of many aspects of computational physics. IAU Symposium 246 brought together experts in all these areas to cover the broad field of dense stellar systems with particular emphasis on the interplay between them and on the comparison between observations and simulations. This volume provides a complete review of the most recent studies in this topical research.

    Book Details:
  • Author : G.D. Roth
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 1994-10-07
  • ISBN : 9783540562733
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Astronomy a Handbook written by G.D. Roth and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-10-07 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several decades have elapsed since the publication of any similar book in the German language. The lack of such a book has been felt keenly by all friends of astronomy. In our space age, astronomical knowledge arouses public interest more and more. Practical observation at the telescope depends more than anything else on such knowledge. The educational value of such a training is undisputed. On the other hand, the work of the amateur astronomer can also contribute essentially to the work of the professionals. It is from these points of view that this handbook aims to help with versatile advice. At the same time, the book intends to show the wide range of applied astronomy, as it presents itself to the friend of the stars; in mathematical-physical fields, in precision mechanics and optics, and last but not least in the area of social relations. Beyond the circle of amateur astronomers the book is addressed to lecturers, teachers, students and pupils. It wishes to serve them as a guide to "astronomical experiments", which we suggest should be performed in primary and secondary schools, specialist colleges, and extramural courses.
