Book Recent Research on the Achievements of Ethnic Minority Pupils

Download or read book Recent Research on the Achievements of Ethnic Minority Pupils written by David Gillborn and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OFSTED has commissioned a limited number of brief but authoritative reviews of research aimed principally to support teachers and those training to be teachers. This review concentrates on the achievement of ethnic minorities. It argues that, since the mid-1980s, issues of race and equal opportunity have tended to slip from policy agendas and that this should be reversed. It focuses on differences in levels of achievement between different ethnic groups, and factors such as social class and gender are also addressed as influencing factors to achievement.

Book Understanding Minority Ethnic Achievement

Download or read book Understanding Minority Ethnic Achievement written by Louise Archer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing fresh insights and understandings about educationally ‘successful’ minority ethnic pupils, this book examines the views, identities and educational experiences of those pupils who are undoubtedly ‘achieving’, but who tend to remain ignored within popular concerns about under-achievement. Combining a broad analysis of minority ethnic pupils’ achievement together with a novel, detailed case study of an educationally ‘successful’ group, the British-Chinese, this book examines a fascinating angle on debates about the reproduction of social inequalities. In this thought-provoking and highly accessible book, the authors: review the theoretical and policy context to issues of ‘race’, gender, social class and achievement discuss the role of teachers and schools explore Chinese parents’ views of their children’s education and explain how these families ‘produce’ and support achievement investigate British-Chinese pupils’ views on their approaches to learning and their educational identities examine the relationship between aspirations and educational achievement consider the complexity and subtlety of racisms experienced by ‘successful’ minority ethnic pupils. This timely and authoritative book contributes to the ongoing debates about levels of achievement among minority ethnic pupils and is an essential book for all researchers, students, education professionals and policy-makers.

Book US educational achievement on international assessments

Download or read book US educational achievement on international assessments written by Ben Dalton and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate about the performance of US students on international assessments of educational achievement routinely fails to account for one consistently stark result: US achievement is bifurcated between a group of high-performing Asian and white students and an exceptionally low-performing group of black and Hispanic students. By summarizing results across 20 major international tests conducted since 1995, this research paper shows that when US racial and ethnic groups are separately compared with other countries, Asian and white students regularly perform at or near the top of international rankings, while black and Hispanic students typically rank at or near the bottom. Furthermore, the United States has a substantially larger minority population than all other developed countries, and minority status is not synonymous with internationally comparable factors such as socioeconomic level or immigrant status. The fact that overall US scores are disproportionately influenced by race and ethnicity suggests that researchers and reformers must reconsider how they use and interpret the results of international achievement tests. The research paper recommends providing and analyzing cross-national data separately by ethnic groups to inform approaches to improving education for all students.

Book The Impact of Ethnic Identity on Student Achievement in China

Download or read book The Impact of Ethnic Identity on Student Achievement in China written by Xinyi Wu and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been concerns about low educational achievement of ethnic minority students in China. Previous studies have explored this area, especially in regard to the relationship between economic backwardness and achievement. However, a new field of study examines ethnic identity being considered as a cause of low achievement. This study is to use meta-analysis to determine the aggregate results of current research on the effects of self-identity on ethnic minority students and their achievement in China. The literature has been collected through searching library holdings, and online electronic resource search. Different levels of identity construction are discussed. This thesis concludes that there is a significant relationship between ethnic identity and student achievement. The findings show that the issue of identity is especially significant to ethnic groups. However, current focus is still on monetary inputs of education and its relationship with achievement. Some recommendations are provided for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muslims constitute Britain's second largest religious grouping, and writing about their experiences has found a new audience in recent years-though not always through a positive lens. But a proper historical treatment of their arrival, settlement and establishment had been conspicuously absent until Humayun Ansari's seminal work, reissued here in an updated edition. "The Infidel Within" draws together rich archival research and first-hand experience into a broad, integrated history of the Muslim presence in Britain. Among the topics addressed are migration and settlement in Britain before 1945, the evolution of a British Muslim identity, Muslim women and families, Muslims and education, and the growing mobilization of Muslims in Britain's political, religious and economic life. This definitive and sympathetic history, brought right up to date, is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand modern Britain.

Book The Under Representation of Black and Minority Ethnic Educators in Education

Download or read book The Under Representation of Black and Minority Ethnic Educators in Education written by Chris Guy Vieler-Porter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Under-Representation of Black and Minority Ethnic Educators in Education evidences that discrimination at an individual, institutional and structural level is still experienced in the leadership of children’s learning. The analysis evaluates the extent to which under-representation is a result of chance, coincidence or design. Based on original research using a mixed-methods approach, and drawing on Critical Race Theory this book examines the under-representation of Black and minority ethnic (BAME) educators in education. It identifies over 40 separate codes emerging from interviews with BAME leaders in children’s learning. These codes include surveillance, isolation, awareness of their position, the need to be better, professional development, the complexity of racism and the difficulties of talking about racism. The book contributes to educational leadership in questioning the extent to which equitable outcomes can be delivered when the education service is itself a site and source of inequality and discrimination. It brings to front the suppressed narratives of under-representation of people of colour and offers insights based on comprehensive data collection. This book will be of great interest for academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of education management and leadership, Critical Race Theory, and the Sociology of Education.
