Book Recent Progress in Microcalorimetry

Download or read book Recent Progress in Microcalorimetry written by E. Calvet and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Progress in Microcalorimetry focuses on the methodologies, processes, and approaches involved in microcalorimetry, as well as heat flow, temperature constancy, and chemistry of alumina and cements. The selection first offers information on the different types of calorimeters; measurement of the heat flow between the calorimeter and jacket boundaries by means of a thermoelectric pile; and constructional details of the microcalorimeter. Discussions focus on classification of calorimeters, use of thermoelectric piles as thermometers, correct measurement of heat flow from a calorimeter container, and temperature constancy of the external boundary. The text then explores theory and manipulation of the apparatus and calibration of the microcalorimeter experimental determination of the constants of the apparatus. The manuscript examines sensitivity, reproducibility, and precision of the microcalorimeter, including reproducibility of the apparatus and precision of microcalorimetric measurements. The book also takes a look at thermochemical measurements, microcalorimetry of adsorption processes, microcalorimetric studies on the chemistry of alumina, and microcalorimetry applied to the chemistry of cements. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the advancements in microcalorimetry.

  • Author : M L McGlashan
  • Publisher : Royal Society of Chemistry
  • Release : 2007-10-31
  • ISBN : 1847555829

Download or read book Chemical Thermodynamics written by M L McGlashan and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.

Book Handbook of Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Download or read book Handbook of Differential Scanning Calorimetry written by Joseph D Menczel and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is the most important thermal analysis technique used today and the most common thermal analysis instrument found in chemical characterization laboratories. DSC has become an everyday tool in characterization laboratories, but many researchers using this technique have a limited understanding of the true breadth of its capabilities. Up to now, there has been no book that would describe the application of DSC in all the various areas of materials chemistry. The Handbook of Differential Scanning Calorimetry has been written to fill that void. This book is designed to summarize the knowledge of differential scanning calorimetry so that materials researchers and application chemists are given both a better understanding of techniques , as well as a review of the full scope of its capabilities. It also discusses how to properly interpret the DSC thermograms data obtained. Included in this work is the most up-to-date information written by some of the leaders in the field. It is written not only to help users get the most out of their equipment, After reading this book, people in all chemical and biological areas will have a broad overview of this measuring technique, and will be able to utilize this analytical technique more efficiently. - Provides a detail description of the theory behind differential scanning while simultaneously providing a wider breadth of understanding of the actual DSC technique - Includes a review of the basics of heat flux and power compensation DSC's, as well as separate chapters on inorganic and organic materials - Reviews the most common commercial DSC instruments on the market and their uses, including TA Instruments, Perkin-Elmer, Hitachi, Mettler Toledo, Netzsch, and Setaram

Book Flows of Energy and Materials in Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Flows of Energy and Materials in Marine Ecosystems written by M. J. R. Fasham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impetus for the conference held at Bombannes, France in May, 1982 arose out of a Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) Working Group on "Mathematical Models in Biological Oceanography". This group was chaired by K.H. Mann and held two meetings in 1977 and 1979. At both meetings it was felt that, although reductionist modelling of marine ecosystems had achieved some successes, the future progress lay in the development of holistic ecosystem models. The members of the group (K.H. Mann, T. Platt, J.M. Colebrook, D.F. Smith, M.J.R. Fasham, J. Field, G. Radach, R.E. Ulanowicz and F. Wulff) produced a critical review of reductionist and holistic models which was published by the Unesco Press (Platt, Mann and Ulanowicz, 1981). One of the conclusions of this review was that, whether holistic or reductionist models are preferred, it is critically important to increase the scientific effort in the measurement of physiological rates for the computation of ecological fluxes. The Working Group therefore recommended that an international meeting should be organized which would attempt to bring together theoretical ecologists and biological oceanographers to assess the present and future capability for measuring ecological fluxes and incorporating these data into models. An approach was made to the Marine Sciences Panel of the NATO Science Committee who expressed an interest in funding such a meeting. They awarded a planning grant and a planning group was formed consisting of M.J.R. Fasham, M.V. Angel, T. Platt, R.E.

Book A Laboratory Manual of Analytical Methods of Protein Chemistry

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Analytical Methods of Protein Chemistry written by P. Alexander and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Laboratory Manual of Analytical Methods of Protein Chemistry, Volume 5 presents the laboratory techniques for protein and polypeptide study. This book discusses the staining procedure for histones, which has a high degree of selectivity for basic proteins and the unique ability to visualize qualitative differences in terms of color changes. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the formalin-mediated ammoniacal-silver staining procedure as a selective stain for basic proteins and its application per cell and per extract. This text then examines the optical rotatory dispersion (ORD), which has advanced into a powerful tool for describing the conformations and conformational changes of biopolymers. Other chapters consider the application of ultrasensitive calorimetry to thermodynamic problems. This book discusses as well the principle of the technique, its instrumentation, and experimental procedures. The final chapter deals with the hydrodynamic densities and preferential hydration values for protein precipitates in concentrated salt solutions. This book is a valuable resource for chemists and biochemists.
