Book excerpt: The Pontchartrain Basin, a large lowland area included in the Mississippi River deltaic plain, has a history closely related to the postglacial sea level rise and to major shifts in Mississippi River courses. The interpretation of the basin's history and of the evolution of Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas is based on geomorphological and archaeological evidence. Significant landforms such as beaches and natural levees, both exposed and active as well as abandoned and buried through the action of subsidence, are discussed in detail and evaluated as clues to the paleogeography. Dating of significant events and establishment of a chronology has been possible through the use of numerous radiocarbon datings and a study of artifact collections from over 50 Indian sites. Collectively indicative of a period of over 3500 years, the sites also contain clues to former environmental conditions and changes and provide a method of evaluating subsidence. (Author).

Book excerpt: A vital and volatile part of the New Orleans landscape and lifestyle, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin actually contains three major bodies of water—Lakes Borgne, Pontchartrain, and Maurepas. These make up the Pontchartrain estuary. Robert W. Hastings provides a thorough examination of the historical and environmental research on the basin, with emphasis on its environmental degradation and the efforts to restore and protect this estuarine system. He also explores the current biological condition of the lakes. Hastings begins with the geological formation of the lakes and the relationship between Native Americans and the water they referred to as Okwa'ta, the “wide water.” From the historical period, he describes the forays of French explorer Pierre Le Moyne D'Iberville in 1699 and traces the environmental history of the basin through the development of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Using the lakes for transportation and then recreation, the surrounding population burgeoned, and this growth resulted in severe water pollution and other environmental problems. In the 1980s, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation led a concerted drive to restore the lakes, an ongoing effort that has proved significant.

Book excerpt: The New Orleans aquifer system includes four areally extensive aquifers (the Gramercy, Norco, Gonzales-New Orleans, and "1,200-foot" aquifers) which are separated by beds of clay. Within the aquifer system in northern Jefferson Parish, only the Gonzales-New Orleans aquifer can be considered as a major source of freshwater; overlying and underlying aquifers generally contain saltwater (water with chloride concentration greater than 250 milligrams per aquifer contains saltwater. Color generally ranges between 50 and 120 platinum cobalt unites in freshwater from the Gonzales-New Orleans aquifer. In 1986, about 1 Mgal/d (million gallons per day) of water was withdrawn from the aquifer in northern Jefferson Parish; however, areally (including adjacent parishes) a total of about 40 Mgal/d was withdrawn from the Gonzales-New Orleans aquifer.
