Book Cave Exploration in Slovenia

Download or read book Cave Exploration in Slovenia written by Martin Knez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the opening and exploration of more than 350 previously undiscovered caves of the Slovenian Karst, discovered during motorway construction work. The summarizes the planning of traffic roads and presents the new findings obtained during construction, as well as studies on newly-discovered karst phenomena and karst waters and their protection. Earthmoving work during construction has revealed a cross-section of the surface of the Classical Karst, covered karst with famous underground stone forests and unique karst in breccia. Research conducted in these caves has yielded a number of new findings on how the karst surface and underground were formed, on the flow of water through karst aquifers, and on the evolution of karst on various types of rock and under various conditions. The work was written by researchers from the ZRC SAZU Karst Research Institute and the Institute of Geology AS CR. The reader will benefit from the authors’ collaboration with planners and builders, which offers valuable insights for the planning and execution of their own activities in karst regions.

Book Cave Rocky Relief and its Speleogenetical Significance

Download or read book Cave Rocky Relief and its Speleogenetical Significance written by Tadej Slabe and published by Založba ZRC. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. V knjigi (Jamski skalni relief in njegov speleogenetski pomen) so strnjena proučevanja o nastanku in razvoju najbolj značilnih jamskih skalnih oblik.

Book History of Cave Science

Download or read book History of Cave Science written by Trevor R. Shaw and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is mainly concerned with the geomorphological aspects of caves - karst hydrology, speleogenesis and the origin of speleothems. Cave exploration was a necessary prerequisite for such studies and its progress is traced from prehistoric times to the systematic regional investigations of the 1 7th century and later. The first extensive work was in Slovenia, stimulated by the practical importance there of karst hydrology for water supply and flood control. Large karst springs had long attracted attention and several hypotheses had already been advanced; according to some they were supplied by water raised from the sea, others explained them by condensation and finally their source as rainfall was accepted. The study of intermittent karst lakes led eventually to the postulation of what amounted to a water table.A true understanding of speleogenesis and the origin of speleothems depended on a knowledge of the chemistry of limestone solution, which in its tum depended on the rejection of phlogiston at the end of the 18th century. Before that time only mechanical erosion was normally conceived as a means of removing particles of solid rock and subsequently redepositing them to form speleothems, although a few people earlier in the century had involved an unspecified "aerial acid". There were also several more primitive theories including the formation of caves by tectonic "catastrophes", by erosion as the water of Noah's Flood drained back underground, and the inflation of cavities in still soft limestone by decomposition gases. For many years speleothems were thought to possess a low form of life, growinglike plants rather than by accretion. After the action of carbon dioxide in speleogenesis was appreciated a new question arose - whether caves could be formed in the saturated zone or whether they were due solely to vadose water. For many years the problem was not recognised but violent controversy was taking place over it by the end of the 19th century.

Book Hypogene Karst Regions and Caves of the World

Download or read book Hypogene Karst Regions and Caves of the World written by Alexander Klimchouk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 903 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates the diversity of hypogene speleogenetic processes and void-conduit patterns depending on variations of the geological environments by presenting regional and cave-specific case studies. The cases include both well-known and newly recognized hypogene karst regions and caves of the world. They all focus on geological, hydrogeological, geodynamical and evolutionary contexts of hypogene speleogenesis. The last decade has witnessed the boost in recognition of the possibility, global occurrence, and practical importance of hypogene karstification (speleogenesis), i.e. the development of solutional porosity and permeability by upwelling flow, independent of recharge from the overlying or immediately adjacent surface. Hypogene karst has been identified and documented in many regions where it was previously overlooked or misinterpreted. The book enriches the basis for generalization and categorization of hypogene karst and thus improves our ability to adequately model hypogene karstification and predict related porosity and permeability. It is a book which benefits every researcher, student, and practitioner dealing with karst.

Download or read book Studies of Cave Sediments written by Ira D. Sasowsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John E. Mylroie and Ira D. Sasowsky' Caves occupy incongruous positions in both our culture and our science. The oldest records of modem human culture are the vivid cave paintings from southern France and northern Spain, which are in some cases more than 30,000 years old (Chauvet, et ai, 1996). Yet, to call someone a "caveman" is to declare them primitive and ignorant. Caves, being cryptic and mysterious, occupied important roles in many cultures. For example, Greece, a country with abundant karst, had the oracle at Delphi and Hades the god of death working from caves. People are both drawn to and mortified by caves. Written records ofcave exploration exist from as early as 852 BC (Shaw, 1992). In the decade of the 1920's, which was rich in news events, the second biggest story (as measured by column inches of newsprint) was the entrapment of Floyd Collins in Sand Cave, Kentucky, USA. This was surpassed only by Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic (Murray and Brucker, 1979).
