In this chapter we propose to explain the general form and arrangement of ancient churches and their furniture, which as before mentioned, is of far greater importance than mere detail: for of what use is good writing if the spelling be bad? or of what use is good spelling if the words have no sense in them? So a knowledge of detail in Architecture is of little worth, if the greater principles of combination be not thoroughly understood. The sin of modern Church Architecture in England until these last few years has not been in the badness of detail, for it has oft times been most pure, yet the building where it is found has been most wretched. It has consisted in the misapplication of those details; sometimes by copying them on too small a scale, thereby rendering them absurd, as. the building churches for dolls or cathedrals for babies: sometimes by misplacing them, as in putting windows well suited for a flank elevation in a western front, or a cathedral doorway in a village porch, and vice versa. When we consider what Architecture really is; that it implies not only the art of building well, but building beautifully and appropriately, we shall soon see that something beyond a mere correctness of detail is necessary to produce a perfect building. When we look abroad on the world and trace the hand of God in the vegetable, animal or mineral kingdom, it is not the beauty of form alone which the most enchants us;--it is not alone the peculiar suitability of each portion to do its particular work that engages our admiration; but it is the combination of utility with beauty which impresses us with wonder and awe, and which tells us in language not to be mistaken, " The hand that made us is divine." The treatment of the main constructional subjects is throughout analytical. But even if this treatment is fairly adequate, no student can arrive at the end of such chapters as those on vaulting. Abutments, window tracery, roofs, etc., without considerable mental strain. If he has read faithfully, and looked up his cross-references as he should have done, there may remain with him a bird's-eye view of the whole subject; but he is very far from grasp or mastery. What he ought to do is to read the chapter straightway a second and even a third time. This, however, cannot be expected of a jaded reader; he wants a change, not a second helping of fish, but an omelette or an entree. Such a change is now provided. The more important subjects, after being treated analytically, are then discussed over again, but in the concrete, rag, after 106 pages setting forth the science and art of vault construction, fifty-seven individual vaults are selected for study, and are dissected separately. If the reader will turn to these, he will find all the principles of construction which he has read about in the text set forth over again, but in such different fashion that he will hardly notice that the new dish is after all but a réchauffé. This application of the concrete method of study, aided by a c0pious apparatus of diagrams, has not been attempted before, and, it is believed, will be found really helpful. Nor will the readers for whom this book has been prepared be likely to complain that here and there it is a good deal more than a treatise on building construction. It is good for those who are to be introduced to medizeval church architecture to know not only how a church was built, but why it was built, who built it, who served in it, who worshipped in it, and what manner of worship was theirs - Ancient or Modern. Accordingly, much space has been devoted in the introductory chapters to matters of human interest, before plunging into stones and mortar. The holding of fairs and the sale of merchandise within, or around churchyards, occasionally encroached on the porches of the very building itself and while such proceedings were deemed improper by ecclesiastical pronouncement, yet the church was the in uence which dominated to _a great degree the playing and the bargaining of the parishioners. In certain churches dancing in the nave undoubtedly took place at rare festival seasons and, in the troublous times or when fires occurred, the parishioners were allowed to store wool and grain or chests of valuables and even household goods within the church, paying, of course, a small amount for the privilege. The church sometimes became the place of safety for valuable papers and records or deeds, these being stored in the strong chest, and in those fierce days when limbs were lopped off and life taken for comparatively trivial offences by a cruelly severe state, the church on the contrary bore perpetual witness to the spirit of mercy by insisting on all her consecrated churches and churchyards being regarded as hallowed ground and a safe sanctuary, under defined limits, for all wrong-doers, and Doctor Cox in his very interesting and instructive book, The English Parish Church, from which the above is paraphrased, goes on to say, there was probably not a single parish church in the whole length and breadth of Eng land which has not exercised at some time or another in its history, the privi lege of sheltering a fugitive and in eventually substituting banishment from the realm in the place of loss of life or limb.
