Book Embankments on Organic Soils

Download or read book Embankments on Organic Soils written by J. Hartlén and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-11-08 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more civil engineering constructions are being built on soft soils. As areas with better foundations are used up the necessity to be able to build structures on soft soils increases. The most troublesome of soft soils are organic soils due mainly to their high compressibility (much higher than in mineral soils), and also their very low shear strength. The large diversity of organic soils with respect to their origin as well as their properties make classification, testing, and engineering prediction of behaviour, very difficult. For this reason, engineers try, in general, to avoid constructing on deep layers of organic soils. If forced, by necessity, to do so, they manage with light structures e.g. embankments or low buildings. The authors of this book have been involved in a joint research project on the testing of embankments on organic soils. This was carried out in the North-Western part of Poland by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute and the Department of Geotechnics of Warsaw Agricultural University. The results of their research is presented in this new book and provides a valuable insight into this growing area in the field of engineering geology.

Book Design and Performance of Embankments on Very Soft Soils

Download or read book Design and Performance of Embankments on Very Soft Soils written by Márcio de Souza S. Almeida and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embankment construction projects on very soft soil often give rise to serious problems. This volume on geotechnics and soft soil engineering therefore treats all phases of the design and construction process exhaustively, from the first investigation step to the monitoring of constructed work. The book presents the development concepts necessary for the project stages and discusses in great detail construction methods, displacement estimations, stability analyses, monitoring, and various other aspects involved. Extensive attention is furthermore paid to the application of geosynthetics as a tool to improve the stability of soft soils and embankments. Including various tables and practical data for many geographical areas in the world, this reference volume is essential reading for engineers and researchers in geotechnical engineering, construction, and related disciplines.

Book Proceedings of the Rocscience International Conference 2023 RIC2023

Download or read book Proceedings of the Rocscience International Conference 2023 RIC2023 written by Reginald E. Hammah and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. Rocscience is delighted to announce the Rocscience International Conference 2023 (RIC2023), an in-person gathering to be held from April 24–26, 2023, in Toronto, Canada. RIC2023's primary objective is to bring geotechnical professionals together to meet and exchange ideas on important issues and developments in geotechnical engineering, particularly combinations of emerging and mature technologies. The geotechnical industry is rapidly evolving. Engineers are more connected through technology, technology is becoming more integrated than ever, and methods combining these technologies are becoming more prevalent. This movement towards combining technologies led us to the conference theme, “Synergy in Geotechnical Engineering – Success Beyond Individual Technologies.” We believe the time is right to highlight how far the industry has come with various technologies and continues to develop. The conference aims to create an environment that fosters new perspectives and helps attendees delve deeper into innovative approaches. During RIC2023, Rocscience will award the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Medal to Dr. Norbert Morgenstern, an internationally recognized authority in the engineering community. As both a practitioner and educator, Dr. Morgenstern’s contributions to the geotechnical community continue to benefit engineers worldwide, and he will give an address on his career. In addition to keynotes by Dr. Morgernstern and four other distinguished speakers, there will be several technical and networking sessions.

Download or read book Ground Improvement written by Professor Jian Chu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-11-07 with total page 1137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of its kind, providing over thirty real-life case studies of ground improvement projects selected by the worlds top experts in ground improvement from around the globe. Volume 3 of the highly regarded Elsevier Geo-engineering book series coordinated by the Series Editor: Professor John A Hudson FREng. An extremely reader friendly chapter format. Discusses wider economical and environmental issues facing scientists in the ground improvement. Ground improvement has been both a science and art, with significant developments observed through ancient history. From the use of straw as blended infill with soils for additional strength during the ancient Roman civilizations, and the use of elephants for compaction of earth dams during the early Asian civilizations, the concepts of reinforced earth with geosynthetics, use of electrokinetics and thermal modifications of soils have come a long way. The use of large and stiff stone columns and subsequent sand drains in the past has now been replaced by quicker to install and more effective prefabricated vertical drains, which have also eliminated the need for more expensive soil improvement methods. The early selection and application of the most appropriate ground improvement techniques can improve considerably not only the design and performance of foundations and earth structures, including embankments, cut slopes, roads, railways and tailings dams, but also result in their cost-effectiveness. Ground improvement works have become increasingly challenging when more and more problematic soils and marginal land have to be utilized for infrastructure development. This edited compilation contains a collection of Chapters from invited experts in various areas of ground improvement, who have illustrated the basic concepts and the applications of different ground improvement techniques using real projects that they have been involved in. The case histories from many countries ranging from Asia, America, Australia and Europe are addressed.
