Book New Societies

Download or read book New Societies written by B. Strauss and published by John Wiley & Sons Incorporated. This book was released on 1993 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specifically in Europe, the world has seen tremendous political and societal changes during the last few years. These changes, still going on, have invasive consequence for the individual and different social groups, and will, of course, influence the individual's health as well as the health care system. In this book, authors working as physicians, psychologists, or psychotherapists in countries from the East and West, try to make an analysis of the cultural and social influences on health and disease, facing the recent developments. Psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy are the disciplines specifically challenged to integrate the significance of these influences into their theories, practice and education. Articles reporting about current trends within these fields contribute to a basis for the discussion about the realization of new models in medicine. The articles combined within this book are revised versions of carefully selected papers presented at the 1st Baltic Sea Conference on Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy, held at Kiel in September 1992. This conference probably was the first occasion for an intensive exchange of scientists working in the field of psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine from the former socialist countries and the Western world following the political changes, and hopefully has founded a tradition. This basis of this book, and the eventful period of its completion contribute to a scientific as well as historical document.

Book Psychosomatic Medicine and Liaison Psychiatry

Download or read book Psychosomatic Medicine and Liaison Psychiatry written by Z.J. Lipowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men born to distinction do not always develop it in their homeland. Sometimes trans plantation taps routes to hidden sources of concern for the embracing of novel con cepts or the clarification of man's behavior, illuminating this understanding in the lan guage of their adopted tongue. Such a one was Joseph Conrad, the Polish sailor whose new vision graced our literature long after his death in 1924. Such a one also is the author this book, who was born in that same year to carryon his country's vigor and resourcefulness in our time. He is numbered among those distinguished emigres whose contributions to our culture and progress emanated from the trials and tribulations of the political upheavals, persecutions, and wars of Europe. Like many others, he has brought sound traditions and learning from his native land to enhance the new and less developed of what was only recently a frontier land. Watersheds in world events impose themselves willy-nilly on our lives. One such time was 1946, when the author of this book left his native land and set out for the West. He spent six months in London learning English and then moved to Ireland, where he trained in medicine and also absorbed novel ways and a new culture, includ ing the writings of Swift and Joyce. This young medical graduate's potential was soon recognized by his teacher in neurology at Belfast, who with foresight predicted great accomplishment.

Book The Biopsychosocial Model of Health and Disease

Download or read book The Biopsychosocial Model of Health and Disease written by Derek Bolton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is a systematic update of the philosophical and scientific foundations of the biopsychosocial model of health, disease and healthcare. First proposed by George Engel 40 years ago, the Biopsychosocial Model is much cited in healthcare settings worldwide, but has been increasingly criticised for being vague, lacking in content, and in need of reworking in the light of recent developments. The book confronts the rapid changes to psychological science, neuroscience, healthcare, and philosophy that have occurred since the model was first proposed and addresses key issues such as the model’s scientific basis, clinical utility, and philosophical coherence. The authors conceptualise biology and the psychosocial as in the same ontological space, interlinked by systems of communication-based regulatory control which constitute a new kind of causation. These are distinguished from physical and chemical laws, most clearly because they can break down, thus providing the basis for difference between health and disease. This work offers an urgent update to the model’s scientific and philosophical foundations, providing a new and coherent account of causal interactions between the biological, the psychological and social.
