Book The Economics of Crime

Download or read book The Economics of Crime written by Rafael Di Tella and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-08-02 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime rates in Latin America are among the highest in the world, creating climates of fear and lawlessness in several countries. Despite this situation, there has been a lack of systematic effort to study crime in the region or the effectiveness of policies designed to tackle it. The Economics of Crime is a powerful corrective to this academic blind spot and makes an important contribution to the current debate on causes and solutions by applying lessons learned from recent developments in the economics of crime. The Economics of Crime addresses a variety of topics, including the impact of kidnappings on investment, mandatory arrest laws, education in prisons, and the relationship between poverty and crime. Utilizining research from within and without Latin America, this book illustrates the broad range of approaches that have been efficacious in studying crime in both developing and developed nations. The Economics of Crime is a vital text for researchers, policymakers, and students of both crime and of Latin American economic policy.

Book Financial Crime in China

Download or read book Financial Crime in China written by Hongming Cheng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given China's rapid development, many observers assert that world economic growth and key economic indicators are now depending on the country alone, including the prospects of the dollar, the Euro, oil prices, industrial commodities, global equity markets and bond prices. On the other hand, China faces a number of major social and economic challenges which could undermine future growth, such as prevalent corruption, financial crime, and the relative lack of the rule of law. Financial Crime in China builds upon original research into the topic and offers a never-before-seen look at the systemic spread of state-controlled corruption in the form of bank fraud, securities fraud, insider trading, and Ponzi schemes. Cheng presents an authentic picture of financial crime in China by identifying the latest manifestations, analyzing empirical data and case studies, and drawing conclusions about the origin, characteristics, dynamics, and developmental features of financial criminality in the context of political economy.

Book Crime

Download or read book Crime written by Paul Ormerod and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Paul Ormerod shows how crime rates have varied across time and between countries in a way that economic variables and incentives alone cannot explain. In a style, accessible to the non-economist and economist alike, the author shows how new developments in economics can be applied to the analysis of criminal behaviour and used to draw policy conclusions. These new models take into account and illustrate how individuals interact with each other in social networks. As a result, they lead the author to more realistic conclusions and more informed policy recommendations."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Corruption as Form of Economic Crime and Government Effectiveness

Download or read book Corruption as Form of Economic Crime and Government Effectiveness written by Nikolaos Deniozos and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption as form of economic crime is a global security issue and has finally been recognized as a first-tier international security challenge closely related to economic and social development. Many view corruption as a “victimless” crime and bribery only as a different way of doing business, but today there is wide acknowledgement that corruption infringes on the fundamental human right to equal treatment. Current studies yield important insights on the nexus of transnational organized crime (TOC) and corruption as major threats to political stability, human security, democracy and economic development. Money laundering, bribery, embezzlement, fraud, extortion, nepotism, cronyism and monopoly are among its manifestations. Research shows a very strong nexus between corruption and organized crime. This situation is common in post-communist and post-conflict countries where power vacuums and weak rule of law have created opportunities for criminal activities and unlawful actions. Any comprehensive analysis of the growing threat of TOC must consider the role of corruption in its role as an enabler for these activities. Today, TOC networks are much more sophisticated and challenging to fight. New TOC groups are constantly diversifying their methods and structures, and, enabled by the forces of globalization such as technology and innovation, have increased their impact on society. By adapting new technologies and methodologies, organized criminal networks have dramatically increased their reach into the lives and affairs of ordinary people, governments and private companies. Globally, institutions such as the EU, the Council of Europe, the Organization of American States, Transparency International, the World Bank and the G-20, the group of countries accounting for 85 percent of the world economy, have recognized corruption as a global problem and are engaging in producing solutions. Furthermore, the matter in question highlights its tremendous impact on the geopolitical dimension as the basic pillars of last - economic one, political one, as well as the pillars of defense and security - are being influenced considerably by. In other words, the geopolitical factor “corruption”, according to the systemic geopolitical analysis constitute a basic component concerning both the investigation and monitoring of power's distribution among actors/ players in the geopolitical game.

Book Study of Economic Crimes in India with Special Emphasis on Financial Market Crimes and Control Measures

Download or read book Study of Economic Crimes in India with Special Emphasis on Financial Market Crimes and Control Measures written by Salman Agha and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crimes in whatever form or category they may fall in, impact mankind in multifarious ways. They damage democratic development, skew social development, inhibit industrial development and endanger economic development. Overall crime is the antithesis of development and is strongly pitted against it. Development is an innate urge nurtured by nations. Economic development, a prerequisite for development of any other kind, and development is also intrinsically linked to mutual and international cooperation. The United Nations Declaration and the Programme of Action on the Establishment of a New International Economic Order (1974) aims at the creation of better conditions so that all peoples may attain a decent life. It then proceeds to define new guiding principles for the future course of crime prevention and criminal justice in the context of development needs and the goals of an International Development Strategy for the third U.N. Development Decade. This would appear as a collective global response towards development, the key element being economic development.Countries, without exception, have been spurred into economic activities in the recent decades, with the objective of ensuring improved quality of living for their citizens. The 'haves' sharing with the 'have nots' through monetary and material aids became a norm, serving mutual interests equally. As if to add conviction to the trite saying that 'good and evil go together' is the emergence of new forms of crime, more sophisticated at exploiting loopholes and opportunities. These are characterized as economic crimes, growingly becoming the order of the day, robbing the masses of the assurances of the State. The global march from the industrial age to the economic age is confronted principally by the growth of crime that impedes progress towards an egalitarian society. The disruptive effects of crime, particularly economic crime, that makes mankind collective victims, can not be checkmated unless countries stand united. The effective countermeasures against economic crime need, therefore, to be on a firm foundation of international cooperation.

Book The Economy crime Relationship Revisited

Download or read book The Economy crime Relationship Revisited written by Nicole White and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between economic deprivation and violent crime has been one of the most widely studied in the field of criminology, yet little is known about the impact of recent macroeconomic conditions and welfare reform policies on the poverty-youth violence relationship. Therefore, the current study utilizes data from the 1993-2004 National Crime Victimization Survey to assess the association between poverty and youth violent victimization trends variously disaggregated by race, ethnicity, and family structure, and the impact of welfare reform and macroeconomic conditions on this relationship. In addition, the potential impact of welfare reform on the individual-level relationship between poverty and youth's risks for violence is examined. Results from macro-level analyses reveal an important association between recent youth poverty and violent victimization trends, but the findings overwhelmingly suggests that the relationship was not affected by changes in macroeconomic conditions and federal welfare policies. Significant impacts were found for certain groups of youth, most notably those in female headed families, while no significant impacts were found for Hispanic youth. Findings from survey-weighted logistic regression analyses also revealed a significant, direct association between poverty and youth's violence risks that appeared to be consistent with a welfare reform effect, but the relationship was fully mediated by the 'female headed family' variable both before and after the passage of welfare reform-the sum of the evidence suggesting that family structure is a key contingency in the poverty-violence relationship. This study concludes with a discussion of key findings, methodological limitations, and recommendations for future research.
