This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Developments in China When the Pacific Era shall have become an accomplished fact, the influence of the orient as a whole, and Of China in particular, will be increasingly great. Even at present the majority of the vital diplomatic questions which have been before the American Government during the past decade, have been issues concerning the Pacific. But the Far East is bound to affect our country not merely in its diplomacy, but in its trade, its industry, its education and its modes Of thought. The revolution in China deserves our most earnest study, not only because, if successful, this re-crea tion Of one Of the most numerous and the most able peoples Of the globe will take its place in history as a world event Of lasting importance, but also because it will exert a marked influence upon our own country as a neighboring Pacific power. Download or read book The Development of China Classic Reprint written by Kenneth Scott Latourette and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of China Such important developments have taken place in the Chinese situation in the little over three years that have elapsed since this book was first published that it has seemed wise to add an account of them to the sixth chapter. At the same time such mistakes in the text as have been disclosed in the months that the book has been in use have been corrected, a few titles of the better recent works on China have been added to the bibliography, and Chapter VII has been modified in a few places to make it accord with existing conditions. The author wishes to express his appreciation of the friendly criticisms which have come from many quarters and which have in part been incorporated in the corrections. It is hoped that because of these changes the book may be of larger use to those who, either as teachers or as students, wish an introduction to the history, culture, and problems of the great Asiatic republic.courtesy of Professor F. Book The Evolution of New China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Evolution of New China Classic Reprint written by William Nesbitt Brewster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of New China The substance of the following pages was given to the students of the Theological School of Boston University in a series of addresses in November, 1904. The students and others ex pressed a desire to have them in more permanent and fuller form than their notes. They were not delivered from manuscript. The task of te writing has been a slow one, not only, nor, perhaps, chiefly because of lack of time from the life of a busy missionary, but because the changes in China have been so rapid and sweeping during the last three years that any utterance except prophecy is almost sure to be out of date by the time it reaches the American public, unless it is telegraphed and published in a daily newspaper. So that there is no intention to make this little volume a vehicle of news. The periodical and daily press must be relied upon for that. There is, however, an at tempt to discuss the trend of events, and to indi cate the direction of the Eastern breezes by a few straws here and there. Book The Problem of China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Problem of China Classic Reprint written by Bertrand Russell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of China A european lately arrived in China, if he is of a receptive and reflective disposition, finds himself confronted with a number Of very puzzling questions, for many of which the problems of Western Europe will not have prepared him. Russian problems, it is true, have important affinities with those of China, but they have also important differences moreover they are decidedly less complex. Chinese problems, even if they affected no one outside China, would be of vast importance, since the Chinese are estimated to constitute about a quarter of the human race. In fact, however, all the world will be vitally affected by the development of Chinese afiairs, which may well prove a decisive factor, for good or evil, during the next two centuries. This makes it impor tant, to Europe and America almost as much 'as to Asia, that there should be an intelligent understand ing of the questions raised by China, even if, as yet, definite answers are difficult to give. Book The Chinese Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chinese Revolution Classic Reprint written by Arthur Judson Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinese Revolution A new China is emerging. Whatever may be the immediate developments, however short or long the process of readjustment, We cannot doubt the outcome. This book is not, of course, intended to be a final account of either the process or the result, but an aid to the study of the large out standing causes and of their operation thus far. These causes are clear, and a knowledge of them is indispensable to an understanding of the extra ordinary significance of the reconstruction which is now taking place. I have used some parts of my former and larger book, New Forces in Old China, which are applicable to present conditions and the scope of this little book - the publishers, The Fleming H. Revell Company, having given their approval. This material, however, has been readjusted, wherever necessary, and brought down to date. Considerable new matter has been added, so that this book is intended to be a separate one representing the present situation. Book The International Development of China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The International Development of China Classic Reprint written by Yat-Sen Sun and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The International Development of China It _is estimated that during the last year of the World War the daily expenses of the various fighting nations amounted to two hundred and forty millions of dollars gold. Take it for granted in a most conservative way that only one half of this sum was spent on munitions and other direct war supplies, that is, one hundred and twenty millions of dollars gold. Let us consider these war supplies from a commercial point of view. The battle - field is the market for these new industries, the consumers of which are the soldiers. Various industries had to be enlisted and many new ones created for the supplies. In order to increase the production of these war commodities day by day, people of the warring countries and even those of the neutral states had to be content with the barest necessities of life and had to give Up all former comforts and luxuries. Now the war is ended and the sole market of these war supplies has closed, let us hope, forever, for the good of Humanity. So, henceforth, we are concerned with the problem as to how a readjustment might be brought about. What is to be considered first is the reconstruction of the various countries, and next the supply of comforts and luxuries that will have to be resumed. We remember that one hundred and twenty million dollars were spent every day on direct war supplies. Let us then suppose that the two items mentioned will take up one half of this sum, that is, sixty millions of dollars a day which will still leave us a balance of sixty million dollars a day to be utilized. Besides, the many millions of soldiers who were once consumers will from now on become producers again. Further more, the unification and nationalization of all the industries. Book The Trade and Administration of China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Trade and Administration of China Classic Reprint written by Hosea Ballou Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trade and Administration of China This book is intended to portray the present state of the Chinese Empire, with such record of the past as will show by what process of evolution the existing state has been reached. NO attempt is made to forecast the future, or even to refer to the revolution which, under the name of Reform, has been begun. The development of many centuries is to be recast, and within a year or a generation, according as the pace is forced or not, it will assume an unaccustomed garb; and the China of that future day, near or distant, will not be the China of to-day. Whether this revolution will follow the precedent of the English Revolution or of the French, whether it will proceed by logical development from step to step, or will rush on a headlong course, will depend upon the wisdom and self restraint of the leaders in the government, and in the last resort upon the nature of that public opinion which will be created in the Chinese people. But, just as the history of the England of the Georges cannot be well understood without some knowledge of the Stuart period, and as an acquaintance with the France of the Kingdom and the Empire is necessary to a comprehension of the France of the Third Republic, so also, to understand the China which the student of the future will know, he must be able to study its past. The China Of today is, with minor differences, the China of the past and in this book it is hoped that the future student will find, within the limits of the dozen subjects treated, a succinct account Of the foundation on which the China of the future will be erected. Book China s Economy

Download or read book China s Economy written by Arthur R. Kroeber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's economic growth has been revolutionary, and is the foundation of its increasingly prominent role in world affairs. It is the world's second biggest economy, the largest manufacturing and trading nation, the consumer of half the world's steel and coal, the biggest source of international tourists, and one of the most influential investors in developing countries from southeast Asia to Africa to Latin America. Multinational companies make billions of dollars in profits in China each year, while traders around the world shudder at every gyration of the country's unruly stock markets. Perhaps paradoxically, its capitalist economy is governed by an authoritarian Communist Party that shows no sign of loosening its grip. China is frequently in the news, whether because of trade disputes, the challenges of its Belt and Road initiative for global infrastructure, or its increasing military strength. China's political and technological challenges, created by a country whose political system and values differ dramatically from most of the other major world economies, creates uncertainty and even fear. China's Economy: What Everyone Needs to Know® is a concise introduction to the most astonishing economic and political story of the last three decades. Arthur Kroeber enhances our understanding of China's changes and their implications. Among the essential questions he answers are: How did China grow so fast for so long? Can it keep growing and still solve its problems of environmental damage, fast-rising debt and rampant corruption? How long can its vibrant economy co-exist with the repressive one-party state? How do China's changes affect the rest of the world? This thoroughly revised and updated second edition includes a comprehensive discussion of the origins and development of the US-China strategic rivalry, including Trump's trade war and the race for technological supremacy. It also explores the recent changes in China's political system, reflecting Xi Jinping's emergence as the most powerful leader since Mao Zedong. It includes insights on changes in China's financial sector, covering the rise and fall of the shadow banking sector, and China's increasing integration with global financial markets. And it covers China's rapid technological development and the rise of its global Internet champions such as Alibaba and Tencent.

Book The Chinese System of Public Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chinese System of Public Education Classic Reprint written by Ping Wen Kuo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinese System of Public Education The development of the educational system of China is a subject full of deep and varied interest to all students, whether of history, of politics, or of education. From it one might be able to trace the causes operating at an early period of the world's history to lead the people of China to so high a degree of civiliza tion and to hold in unity as a nation so many millions of people. One might also be able to trace from it the method used to insure the perpetuity of the government and the content of the people. The way in which China's educational system has helped her to mold the character of the people, giving them a cohesion and a stability remarkable among the nations of the world, and the manner in which she is now struggling to adapt herself to modern conditions and to meet new demands, are also full of practical lessons for statesmanlike educators of all nations. Indeed, a record of even the mistakes and failures made by China would be some contribution to the educational world, for it might prevent other nations from falling into similar errors and warn them to guard against similar mistakes. In a word, the story of the development of education in China, like that of other nations, possesses points of interest and lessons in management valuable either positively as models for guidance or negatively as experiments to be avoided. Download or read book Impressions of China and the Present Revolution written by Edmund Gardiner Fishbourne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of China, and the Present Revolution: Its Progress and Prospects It has been said, that the Insurgents are students of Scripture, and anxious for the dissemination of its truths, and each new fact learnt concerning them seems to establish the truth of this statement. The last work of theirs, received by the Styx, fully justifies the above, for though it is professedly only a work upon political economy, many of the ideas and sentiments set forth in it are certainly drawn from the Scriptures, both of the Old and New Testament, and obviously by themselves; and though these do not always agree with our general deductions from the same source, they yet establish a very important point or two -viz., that they admit the supremacy of Scrip ture, and are desirous of conforming to its require ments. Nor can their offerings to the Deity be considered an exception, even though these should be esteemed by some as more than thank-offerings, since the ten deney in every age has been towards the material in this respect; in forgetfulness that God is a Spirit, and that they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit. If it be not the special sin of our day and generation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The succeeding chapters have been written from a study of the documents, and from knowledge of the situation gained dur ing residence in China. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years in China: Or China in Transition I am fully persuaded that the Chinese have many admirable qualities; qualities that have made, and are destined still to make them a great nation. Yet I would be a false friend to that people to whose elevation I have consecrated my life, and of whom I'have so much hope in the future, were I not to speak plainly of the influences that are hurrying them on to ruin unless speedily checked by their acceptance of progress from the West, and that Divine religion, which, though originating in the East, is now propagated from the West. Hoping that God's blessing may rest upon this slight tribute toward promoting His truth, I commit it to the public, hoping it may throw some light upon the new Eastern question.
