Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a survey paper on the subject of hypersonic boundary-layer transition. Part 1 discusses boundary-layer stability theory, hypersonic boundary-layer stability experiments, and a comparison between theory and experiment. Part 2 contains comments on how many configuration and flow parameters influence transition. Part 3 discusses some additional general aspects of transition. Part 4 discusses problems of predicting transition and comments on three prediction methods. Part 5 contains some general guidelines for prediction methodology. Keywords: Boundary layer transition, Boundary layer stability, Hypersonic boundary layers.

Book Recent Results in Laminar Turbulent Transition

Download or read book Recent Results in Laminar Turbulent Transition written by Siegfried Wagner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methodic investigations of laminar-turbulent transition in wall-bounded she ar flows under controlled conditions are essential for untangling the various complex phenomena of the transition process occurring in flows at practical conditions. They allow understanding of the instability processes of the la minar flow, and thus enable the development of tools for flow control. On the one hand the laminar flow regime can be extended by delaying transition to reduce viscous drag, and on the other hand large-scale flow disturbances or transition can be forced in order to enhance momentum and mass ex change. Thus flow separation can be prevented, or mixing of fuel and air in combustion engines enhanced, for instance. The "DFG Verbund-Schwerpunktprogramm Transition" - a cooperative priority research program of universities, research establishments and indu stry in Germany - has been launched in April 1996 with the aim to explore transition by a coordinated use, development and validation of advanced experimental techniques and theoretical/numerical simulation methods, bin ding together all the appropriate resources available in Germany. At the very beginning of the six-year research period specifically selected test problems were to be investigated by various theoretical and experimental methods to identify and possibly rule out inadequate numerical or experimental methods. With respect to experiments it was planned to use multi-sensor-surface measuring techniques, the infrared measuring technique, and particle image velocimetry (PlV) in addition to hot-wire techniques to get instantaneous images of flows in sections, on surfaces, or within the complete flow field.

Book Boundary Layer Effects

Download or read book Boundary Layer Effects written by Anthony W. Fiore and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975 the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Republic of Germany signed a Data Exchange Agreement numbered AF-75-G-7440 entitled 'Viscous and Interacting Flow Fields.' The purpose was to exchange data in the area of boundary layer research. It includes both experimental and theoretical boundary layer research at speeds from subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers in the presence of laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers. The main effort in recent years has been on turbulent boundary layers, both attached and separated in the presence of such parameters as pressure gradients, wall temperature, surface roughness, etc. In the United States the research was conducted in various Department of Defense, NASA, aircraft corporations, and various university laboratories. In the Federal Republic of Germany it was carried out within the various DFVLR, industrial, and university research centers.

Book Effects of Unit Reynolds Number Nose Bluntness and Roughness on Boundary Layer Transition

Download or read book Effects of Unit Reynolds Number Nose Bluntness and Roughness on Boundary Layer Transition written by J. Leith Potter and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condtions encountered in the high Mach number flow regime are show to profoundly affect the longitudinal extent of the boundary layer from beginning to end of transition, the distribution of fluctuation energy in the laminar layer, and effectiveness of surface roughness in promoting transition. A critical layer of intense local energy fluctuations was found at all Mach numbers studied. The existence of such a critical layer is predicted by stability theory. Hot-wire surveys of the laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers are presented to illustrate the critical layer in laminar flow and subsequent development into the transition process. The relation between boundary layer transition on flat plates and cones in supersonic flow is explored and a process for correcting data to account for leading edge bluntness is devised. On the basis of a comparison of data corrected for the effects of leading edge geometry, it is shown that the Reynolds umber of transition on a cone is three times that on a vanishingly thin flate plate. Close agreement between data from various wind tunnels is demonstrated. Study of the effect of finite leading edges yields significant illustrations of the influence of unit Reynolds number on boundary layer transition. A correlation of the effects of surface roughness on transition is achieved. This treatment includes two- and three-dimensional roughness in both subsonic and supersonic streams. At this time only zero pressure gradients have been studied. The entire range of movement of transition from its position with no roughness up to its reaching the roughness element is describable by the procedure give. Examples of application of the correlation results show excellent agreement with experimental data from a variety of sources. Implications concerning tripping hypersonic boundary layers are discussed.
