Book Recent and Fossil Clupeomorph Fishes with Materials for Revision of the Subgroups of Clupeoids

Download or read book Recent and Fossil Clupeomorph Fishes with Materials for Revision of the Subgroups of Clupeoids written by Lance Grande and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Clupeomorpha are a diverse, widespread group of fishes containing (as defined here) about 317 Recent and over 150 known fossil species. They are known as far back as the early Cretaceous and today are worldwide in distribution. Surprisingly little is known about this group phylogenetically. This study briefly reviews past work on clupeomorph interrelationships and examines the skeletal morphology of clupeomorphs to produce materials for a revision of the subgroups of clupeiform fishes. By concentrating on clupeomorph osteology, fossils can be added to the resulting classification. Comparative osteological data, based on examination of over 750 skeletal preparations, are summarized by 20 tables and several cladograms. The osteology of a pellonuline (Odaxothrissa vittata) and dorosomatine (Dorosoma cepedianum) is descriptively illustrated in detail. Also, a list of all nominal fossil species known to the author which appear to belong in Clupeomorpha as defined here, is provided (based on examination of either illustrations or specimens of over 150 fossil species), and the species in this list are briefly discussed. It was found that several skeletal characters define groups such as Clupeomorpha, Clupeomorpha Division 2, Clupeiformes, Clupeoidei, and some clupeoid subgroups. Based on osteological characters, the family Pristigasteridae should be excluded from the superfamily Clupeoidea (which includes Chirocentridae and Clupeidae); and the groups Pristigasteroidea, Engrauloidea, Clupeoidea, Clupeidae, Pellonulinae, and Dussumieriinae were each found to be monophyletic. Several fossil groups are removed from Clupeomorpha (†Ornategulum, †Clupavidae, †Engraulis evolans, and others). Cladograms for Pristigasteroidea, Dussumieriinae, and Pellonulinae are given based on osteological characters. No osteological characters were discovered to indicate that Dorosomatinae, Alosinae, Clupeinae, or these three groups together, are monophyletic. The biggest remaining problem in clupeomorph systematics is seen as discovering the interrelationships of the members of these three subfamilial 'groups of convenience' among Clupeoidei. It is hoped that this work will serve as a base for future phylogenetic studies on clupeomorph fishes by paleoichthyologists and neoichthyologists interested in clupeomorph osteology. The interrelationships of clupeid fishes and the placement of many fossil species within Clupeomorpha are still under study"--P. 235.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case history approach has an impressive record of success in a variety of disciplines. Collections of case histories, casebooks, are now widely used in all sorts of specialties other than in their familiar appli cation to law and medicine. The case method had its formal beginning at Harvard in 1871 when Christopher Lagdell developed it as a means of teaching. It was so successful in teaching law that it was soon adopted in medical education, and the collection of cases provided the raw material for research on various diseases. Subsequently, the case history approach spread to such varied fields as business, psychology, management, and economics, and there are over 100 books in print that use this approach. The idea for a series of Casehooks in Earth Science grew from my experience in organizing and editing a collection of examples of one variety of sedimentary deposits. The prqject began as an effort to bring some order to a large number of descriptions of these deposits that were so varied in presentation and terminology that even specialists found them difficult to compare and analyze. Thus, from the beginning, it was evident that something more than a simple collection of papers was needed. Accordingly, the nearly fifty contributors worked together with George de Vries Klein and me to establish a standard format for presenting the case histories.

Book Evolution of the Vertebrate Ear

Download or read book Evolution of the Vertebrate Ear written by Jennifer A. Clack and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of vertebrate hearing is of considerable interest in the hearing community. However, there has never been a volume that has focused on the paleontological evidence for the evolution of hearing and the ear, especially from the perspective of some of the leading paleontologists and evolutionary biologists in the world. Thus, this volume is totally unique, and takes a perspective that has never been taken before. It brings to the fore some of the most recent discoveries among fossil taxa, which have demonstrated the sort of detailed information that can be derived from the fossil record, illuminating the evolutionary pathways this sensory system has taken and the diversity it had achieved.

Landman Division of Paleontology American Museum of Natural History New York, New York 10024 landman@amnh. org When Nautilus: Biology and Paleobiology of a Living Fossil was published in 1987, it marked a milestone in cross-disciplinary collaboration. More than half of the contributing authors (36/65) were paleontologists, many of whom were collaborating with neontological counterparts. Their interest in studying this reclusive, poorly known animal was being driven by a search for clues to the mode of life and natural history of the once dominant shelled cephalopods, through study of the sole surviving genus. At the same time, Nautilus offered an opportunity for neontologists to look at a fundamentally different, phylogenetically basal member of the extant Cephalopoda. It was a w- win situation, combining paleontological deep-time perspectives, old fashioned expeditionary zeal, traditional biological approaches and new techniques. The results were cross-fertilized investigations in such disparate fields as ecology, functional morphology, taphonomy, genetics, phylogeny, locomotive dynamics, etc. As one reviewer of the xxxvi Introduction xxxvii book noted, Nautilus had gone from being one of the least known to one of the best understood of living cephalopods.

Book The History and Sedimentology of Ancient Reef Systems

Download or read book The History and Sedimentology of Ancient Reef Systems written by George D. Stanley Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: The chapters of this book contain contributions from an international group of specialists. They address some important themes in both modern and ancient reef systems. Some chapters contain `snapshots' of reefs of particular intervals, while others touch on relevant themes of both modern and ancient reefs - themes that weave their way through reefs of all ages. This book opens and sets the stage with an introduction to both modern and ancient reefs and reef ecosystems. This chapter is also intended as a basic introduction for students, general geologists, and professionals or others who may be unfamiliar with reefs and reef ecosystems. The chapter addresses the living coral reef ecosystem, stressing among other relevant factors, the importance of ecological and physical interactions between the organisms and their environment. The chapter also addresses mass extinction and provides a general overview of the history of reefs.

Book The Taxonomy Systematics and Zoogeography of Hypsibarbus a New Genus of Large Barbs Pisces Cyprinidae from the Rivers of Southeastern Asia

Download or read book The Taxonomy Systematics and Zoogeography of Hypsibarbus a New Genus of Large Barbs Pisces Cyprinidae from the Rivers of Southeastern Asia written by Walter J. Rainboth and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study the author describes Hypsibarbus, a new genus of Asian cyprinid fishes with twelve species, three of them new. A complete set of 45 measurements and 17 counts was taken and analyzed for approximately 250 specimens, including all type material, of more than 1000 specimens encountered, representing most of the major fish collections of the world. The author fully redescribes and illustrates all species in the new genus, and includes keys for their identification. To provide a basis for understanding zoogeographic implications of the phylogeny obtained for Hypsibarbus, the geography and history of the Southeast Asia river basins is discussed in detail.

Book Evolution of the Vertebrate Auditory System

Download or read book Evolution of the Vertebrate Auditory System written by Geoffrey A. Manley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The function of vertebrate hearing is served by a surprising variety of sensory structures in the different groups of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. This book discusses the origin, specialization, and functional properties of sensory hair cells, beginning with environmental constraints on acoustic systems and addressing in detail the evolutionary history behind modern structure and function in the vertebrate ear. Taking a comparative approach, chapters are devoted to each of the vertebrate groups, outlining the transition to land existence and the further parallel and independent adaptations of amniotic groups living in air. The volume explores in depth the specific properties of hair cells that allowed them to become sensitive to sound and capable of analyzing sounds into their respective frequency components. Evolution of the Vertebrate Auditory System is directed to a broad audience of biologists and clinicians, from the level of advanced undergraduate students to professionals interested in learning more about the evolution, structure, and function of the ear.
