Download or read book Avian Growth and Development written by J. Matthias Starck and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first re-appraisal in 50 years of concepts of development made in birds. This book is a case study in evolutionary diversification of life histories. Although birds have a rather uniform body plan and physiology, they exhibit marked variation in development type, parental care, and rate of growth. Altricial birds are fully dependent on their parents for warmth and nutrition and begin posthatching life in a more or less embryonic condition. At the other extreme, such superprecocial species as the megapodes are independent of all parental care from hatching, and the neonate, able to fly, resembles an adult bird. This book thus attempts to present an integrative perspective of organism biology, ecology, and evolution.

Book Leanness in Domestic Birds

Download or read book Leanness in Domestic Birds written by B. Leclercq and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leanness in Domestic Birds: Genetic, Metabolic, and Hormonal Aspects is a proceeding of a symposium held in Tours, France, from 4 to 6 August 1987. Said symposium was concerned with genetic and metabolic factors associated with leanness of poultry and accounts of research in these areas. The book is divided into six parts. Part I covers studies that involve genetics in the selection of meat leanness. Part II deals with the relationship of feed intake and metabolism to the leanness of poultry. Part III discusses the lipid metabolism in birds and its related factors and effects. Part IV talks about the use of hormones such as insulin, thyroid hormones, and corticosteroids in the control of fatness in birds. Part V covers studies involving amino acid metabolism and its relation to leanness in poultry, and Part VI talks about the applications of the studies in commercial use. The text is recommended for zoologists, agriculturists, and poultry farmers who would like to know more about the different factors that affect the leanness of domestic birds and its implications.

Book Advances in Animal and Comparative Physiology

Download or read book Advances in Animal and Comparative Physiology written by G. Pethes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 20: Advances in Animal and Comparative Physiology covers the proceedings of the symposia of the 28th International Congress of Physiology. The book discusses several studies that tackle issues about the advances in animal and comparative study. The text is comprised of 61 chapters in which Chapter 4 and the succeeding chapters are grouped into eight parts based on the topic of the studies. The opening chapter explains sensory modalities beyond human perception, while Chapter 2 discusses trends in the physiology of domesticated animals. Chapter 3 reviews muscles in living animals, which is followed by topics grouped into parts. The first part deals with fetal homeostasis, while the second part discusses control of corpora lutea function of ruminant and non-ruminant domesticated animals. The third part deals with the comparative physiology of lactation in farm animals, while the fourth part tackles digestion in non-ruminant herbivorous animals. Parts 5 and 6 cover topic on diving, which includes metabolism, physiology, and control. The seventh part discusses phylogenesis of hormones and hormone receptors, and the last part covers neuromuscular transmission in invertebrates. Researchers whose line of work concerns the physiological properties of animals will find this book as a great source of related literatures.

Book Endocrinology Neuroendocrinology Neuropeptides

Download or read book Endocrinology Neuroendocrinology Neuropeptides written by E. Stark and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 13: Endocrinology, Neuroendocrinology, Neuropeptides, Part I offers a lengthy discussion of the research, experiments, and investigations on endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, and neuropeptides. This selection, divided into five parts with 47 chapters, features the literature of able scholars who diligently conducted research on the subjects. The areas covered in their literature include discussions on hormone receptors and decoding of genetic information; biosynthesis, processing, and characterization of prehormones, prohormones, and hormones; pituitary and gastrointestinal hormone-like material in brain; behavior and hormonal balance; and extrahypothalamic structures in neuroendocrine regulation. Although the contributors put their efforts on different areas, they clearly present how endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, and neuropeptides caught the interest of physiologists and scholars. In clarifying their works, they include in this book observations, methodologies, conclusion, and recommendations. This book can best serve the interest of physiologists and other readers interested in the research on endocrinology, neuropeptides, and neuroendocrinology.
