Download or read book Current Ornithology written by Richard Johnston and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not often that a century of scholarly activity breaks conveniently into halves, but ornithology of the first half of the 20th century is clearly different from that of the second half. The break actually can be marked in 1949, with the appearance of Meyer and Schuz's Ornithologie ais Biologische Wissenschaft. Prior to this, ornithologists had tended to speak mostly to other ornithologists, experiments (the testing of hy potheses) were uncommon, and a concern for birds as birds was the dominant thread in our thinking. Subsequent to 1949, ornithologists have tended to become ever more professional in their pursuits and to incorporate protocols of experimental biology into their work; more importantly perhaps, they have begun to show a concern for birds as agencies for the study of biology. Many of the most satisfying of recent ornithological studies have come from reductionist research ap proaches, and have been accomplished by specialists in such areas as biochemistry, ethology, genetics, and ecology. A great many studies routinely rely on statistical hypothesis testing, allowing us to come to conclusions unmarred by wishful thinking. Some of us are ready to tell the world that we are a "hard" science, and perhaps that time is not so very far off for most of us. Volume 2 examines several solid examples of late 20th-century ornithology.
Download or read book Hormones Lipoproteins and Atherosclerosis written by M. Palkovič and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormones, Lipoproteins and Atherosclerosis, Volume 35, emerged from the international symposium on ""Hormones, Lipoproteins and Atherosclerosis"" held in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. The symposium was devoted to the problems of hormonal effects on lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis, and was also concerned with problems of composition, structure, synthesis, and degradation of liporoteins, as well as with genetical and clinical aspects. The participants of the symposium have contributed to this volume not only by presenting new data but also new ideas and stimulating new trends in the research and therapy of metabolic derangements of lipoproteins and the resulting pathological conditions. The 51 contributions are organized into five parts. Part I includes papers on the metabolism of lipoproteins. Part II presents studies on hormones and lipoproteins. Part III is devoted to atherosclerosis and lipoproteins. Part IV takes up the clinical aspects of hyperlipoproteinemias. Part V on methods contains two studies—the first on the isolation of human plasma high density lipoproteins; the second on the separation of subfractions of the serum triacylglycerols.
Download or read book Cardiovascular Physiology Heart Peripheral Circulation and Methodology written by A. G. B. Kovách and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 8: Cardiovascular Physiology: Heart, Peripheral Circulation and Methodology presents the proceedings of the 28th International Congress of Physiological Sciences, held in Budapest, Hungary, on July 13–19, 1980. This book examines some of the significant arterial pressure control mechanisms. Organized into 43 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the origin of the notion of a vasomotor center controlling the arterial blood pressure. This text then discusses the concept of long-term arterial pressure regulation and some of the basic mechanisms of hypertension. Other chapters consider the sites and mechanisms of capillary control. This book discusses as well the performance of the heart during its excitation–contraction cycle, which is influenced by the movements of ions across the cell membrane. The final chapter deals with the interpretation of in vivo NADH fluorescence measurements. This book is a valuable resource for physiologists and clinicians.
