Book Wavelet Transforms and Their Applications

Download or read book Wavelet Transforms and Their Applications written by Lokenath Debnath and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview Historically, the concept of "ondelettes" or "wavelets" originated from the study of time-frequency signal analysis, wave propagation, and sampling theory. One of the main reasons for the discovery of wavelets and wavelet transforms is that the Fourier transform analysis does not contain the local information of signals. So the Fourier transform cannot be used for analyzing signals in a joint time and frequency domain. In 1982, Jean MorIet, in collaboration with a group of French engineers, first introduced the idea of wavelets as a family of functions constructed by using translation and dilation of a single function, called the mother wavelet, for the analysis of nonstationary signals. However, this new concept can be viewed as the synthesis of various ideas originating from different disciplines including mathematics (Calder6n-Zygmund operators and Littlewood-Paley theory), physics (coherent states in quantum mechanics and the renormalization group), and engineering (quadratic mirror filters, sideband coding in signal processing, and pyramidal algorithms in image processing). Wavelet analysis is an exciting new method for solving difficult problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering, with modern applications as diverse as wave propagation, data compression, image processing, pattern recognition, computer graphics, the detection of aircraft and submarines, and improvement in CAT scans and other medical image technology. Wavelets allow complex information such as music, speech, images, and patterns to be decomposed into elementary forms, called the fundamental building blocks, at different positions and scales and subsequently reconstructed with high precision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An "applications first" approach to discrete wavelettransformations Discrete Wavelet Transformations provides readers with a broadelementary introduction to discrete wavelet transformations andtheir applications. With extensive graphical displays, thisself-contained book integrates concepts from calculus and linearalgebra into the construction of wavelet transformations and theirvarious applications, including data compression, edge detection inimages, and signal and image denoising. The book begins with a cursory look at wavelet transformationdevelopment and illustrates its allure in digital signal and imageapplications. Next, a chapter on digital image basics, quantitativeand qualitative measures, and Huffman coding equips readers withthe tools necessary to develop a comprehensive understanding of theapplications. Subsequent chapters discuss the Fourier series, convolution, and filtering, as well as the Haar wavelet transformto introduce image compression and image edge detection. Thedevelopment of Daubechies filtersis presented in addition tocoverage of wavelet shrinkage in the area of image and signaldenoising. The book concludes with the construction of biorthogonalfilters and also describes their incorporation in the JPEG2000image compression standard. The author's "applications first" approach promotes a hands-ontreatment of wavelet transforma-tion construction, and over 400exercises are presented in a multi-part format that guide readersthrough the solution to each problem. Over sixty computer labs andsoftware development projects provide opportunities for readers towrite modules and experiment with the ideas discussed throughoutthe text. The author's software package, DiscreteWavelets, is usedto perform various imaging and audio tasks, compute wavelettransformations and inverses, and visualize the output of thecomputations. Supplementary material is also available via thebook's related Web site, which includes an audio and videorepository, final project modules, and softwarefor reproducingexamples from the book. All software, including theDiscreteWavelets package, is available for use withMathematica®, MATLAB®, and Maple. Discrete Wavelet Transformations strongly reinforces the use ofmathematics in digital data applications, sharpens programmingskills, and provides a foundation for further study of moreadvanced topics, such as real analysis. This book is ideal forcourses on discrete wavelet transforms and their applications atthe undergraduate level and also serves as an excellent referencefor mathematicians, engineers, and scientists who wish to learnabout discrete wavelet transforms at an elementary level.

Book Wavelet Analysis with Applications to Image Processing

Download or read book Wavelet Analysis with Applications to Image Processing written by Lakshman Prasad and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wavelet analysis is among the newest additions to the arsenals of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers, and offers common solutions to diverse problems. However, students and professionals in some areas of engineering and science, intimidated by the mathematical background necessary to explore this subject, have been unable to use this powerful tool. The first book on the topic for readers with minimal mathematical backgrounds, Wavelet Analysis with Applications to Image Processing provides a thorough introduction to wavelets with applications in image processing. Unlike most other works on this subject, which are often collections of papers or research advances, this book offers students and researchers without an extensive math background a step-by-step introduction to the power of wavelet transforms and applications to image processing. The first four chapters introduce the basic topics of analysis that are vital to understanding the mathematics of wavelet transforms. Subsequent chapters build on the information presented earlier to cover the major themes of wavelet analysis and its applications to image processing. This is an ideal introduction to the subject for students, and a valuable reference guide for professionals working in image processing.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the July, 1989 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Fourier Analysis and its Applications. The conference, held at the beautiful II Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glorious Tuscany region of northern Italy, created a dynamic in teraction between world-renowned scientists working in the usually disparate communities of pure and applied Fourier analysts. The papers to be found herein include important new results in x-ray crystallography by Nobel Laureate Herbert Hauptman, the application of the new concept of bispectrum to system identification by renowned probabilist Athanasios Papoulis, fascinating appli cations of number theory in Fourier analysis by eminent electrical engineer Manfred R. Schroeder, and exciting concepts regarding polynomials with restricted coefficients by foremost mathematical problem solver Donald J. Newman. The remaining papers further illustrate the inherent power and beauty of classical Fourier analysis, whether the results presented were sought as an end in themselves, or whether these classical methods were employed as a tool in illustrating and solving a particular applied problem. From antenna design to concert hall acoustics to image and speech processing to unimodular polynomi als, each conference participant benefited significantly from his or her exposure, in many cases for the first time, to those scientists on the other end of the spectrum from them selves. The purpose of this volume is to pass those benefits on to the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two subjects mentioned in the title "Wavelets, Time Frequency Methods and Phase Space" are so well established that they do not need any explanations. The first is related to them, but a short introduction is appropriate since the concept of wavelets emerged fairly recently. Roughly speaking, a wavelet decomposition is an expansion of an arbitrary function into smooth localized contributions labeled by a scale and a position pa rameter. Many of the ideas and techniques related to such expansions have existed for a long time and are widely used in mathematical analysis, theoretical physics and engineering. However, the rate of progress increased significantly when it was realized that these ideas could give rise to straightforward calculational methods applicable to different fields. The interdisciplinary structure (R.C.P. "Ondelettes") of the C.N.R.S. and help from the Societe Nationale Elf-Aquitaine greatly fostered these developments. The conference, the proceedings of which are contained in this volume, was held at the Centre National de Rencontres Mathematiques (C.N.R.M) in Marseille from December 14-18, 1987 and bought together an interdisciplinary mix of par ticipants. We hope that these proceedings will convey to the reader some of the excitement and flavor of the meeting.
