Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Advances in Their Anatomy, Their Ology, Pathology, Diagnosis and Treatment Shortly after the appearance of my "Diseases of the Heart and Aorta," in 1905, I began to issue a series of monographs as successive addenda to the volume. They included a number of topics that were gradually and deservedly coming into prominence, or required recasting in the light of newer experience. These monographs have now been revised and are presented to the profession in book form. For this opportunity I am indebted to the courtesy of the medical journals which published them. The purpose of my book has been to furnish intelligible and at the same time condensed accounts of these matters, rather than summaries of definite conclusions. No one can doubt that additional discoveries will be made in cardiac anatomy, physiology, pathology and therapy, calling for corresponding alterations in our present views; for cardiology, like all branches of medicine, is a progressive science. Indeed, even when we have accepted the recent findings of Keith, Flack, Tawara, and their fellow anatomists, and after fully recognizing the value of the data furnished by such physiologists as Gaskell, Einthoven, Lewis and Cushny, we should realize that other competent men will extend their work. In fact, from the reports that from time to time trickle down to us from such sources, it is evident that the stores of information in these departments are still being added to, while pathologists and therapists are even more actively cultivating their respective fields. But even if there are depths in any branch that have not been fathomed, we should not therefore deter ourselves from gathering together what new stores we have at hand, if they can be profitably laid before the profession. Especially is this true in the matter of cardiovascular diseases, where the advances of the last seven years have been numerous and important. And when these diseases are felt to be only second to the tubercular in the calendars of fatality, almost every item bearing on them awakens a lively interest. By referring to the Cyclopedia, it will be perceived that in treating of Cancer of Particular Parts, the author in some places has not entirely completed his subject, that he might not interfere with what would appear in another part of the work, hereafter to be published, under other heads, to which he refers his readers. The American Editor has therefore confined himself to making those additions, chiefly in the surgical operations required, which would render the work more acceptable to the practical surgeon, an account of the operations being added wherever they have been omitted. This task perhaps has been but very imperfectly performed, as it was necessarily done during the short time while the work was passing through the press, and among various other occupations. Its mechanism has been fully explained in various books, but a systematic exposition of the practical results of the Roentgen method of examination has not yet appeared. The purpose of this book is to deal as little as possible with the questions of apparatus and technic and to devote the entire space to the actual clinical teaching of the subject. This teaching is accomplished by means of illustrative plates, by legends corresponding to them, and by a text explanatory of what can really be seen in health and in disease in early life. The book is devoted to the diagnosis of disease and does not deal to any extent with treatment. It is intended to provide a means by which a fair knowledge of the Roentgen method can be acquired by the student when the personal instruction of a skilled Roentgenologist is not available. I believe that in teaching Roentgenology it is of the utmost importance to present illustrations of evident conditions and not to mislead the student with vague descriptions. In the plates I have been careful not to allow any retouching whatever, and I have discarded those which would have to be altered in order to show what would be described in the legends. Unless this is done the plates are reduced to diagrams and lose their value for accuracy and for teaching the student to interpret them independently.
