Book Refractory Metal Alloys and Composites for Space Nuclear Power Systems

Download or read book Refractory Metal Alloys and Composites for Space Nuclear Power Systems written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space power requirements for future NASA and other U.S. missions will range from a few kilowatts to megawatts of electricity. Maximum efficiency is a key goal of any power system in order to minimize weight and size so that the Space Shuttle may be used a minimum number of times to put the power supply into orbit. Nuclear power has been identified as the primary power source to meet these high levels of electrical demand. One method to achieve maximum efficiency is to operate the power supply, energy conservation system, and related components at relatively high temperatures. For systems now in the planning stages, design temperatures range from 1300 K for the immediate future to as high as 1700 K for the advanced systems. NASA Lewis Research Center has undertaken a research program on advanced technology of refractory metal alloys and composites that will provide baseline information for space power systems in the 1900's and the 21st century. Special emphasis is focused on the refractory metal alloys of niobium and on the refractory metal composites which utilize tungsten alloy wires for reinforcement. Basic research on the creep and creep-rupture properties of wires, matrices, and composites are discussed. Titran, Robert H. and Stephens, Joseph R. and Petrasek, Donald W. Book Refractory Alloy Technology for Space Nuclear Power Applications

Download or read book Refractory Alloy Technology for Space Nuclear Power Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose of this symposium is twofold: (1) to review and document the status of refractory alloy technology for structural and fuel-cladding applications in space nuclear power systems, and (2) to identify and document the refractory alloy research and development needs for the SP-100 Program in both the short and the long term. In this symposium, an effort was made to recapture the space reactor refractory alloy technology that was cut off in midstream around 1973 when the national space nuclear reactor program began in the early 1960s, was terminated. The six technical areas covered in the program are compatibility, processing and production, welding and component fabrication, mechanical and physical properties, effects of irradiation, and machinability. The refractory alloys considered are niobium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten. Thirteen of the 14 pages have been abstracted separately. The remaining paper summarizes key needs for further R and D on refractory alloys. (DLC).

Book Evolution of Refractory Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Evolution of Refractory Metals and Alloys written by Edward N. C. Dalder and published by Minerals, Metals, & Materials Society. This book was released on 1994 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers is from the 1993 TMS annual Meeting held in Denver, Colorado, February 21-25, 1993. It provides a review of the development of refractory metal alloys (those based on vanadium, columbian, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten and rhenium) from the 1950s to the present. The technology of many of the leading researchers in this area has been recorded and preserved as a reference for current and future researchers.
