Book The Hippocampus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philippe Taupin
  • Publisher : Nova Publishers
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9781600219146
  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book The Hippocampus written by Philippe Taupin and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hippocampus , the Greek word for seahorse, is one of the most fascinating and intriguing regions of the mammalian brain. It is a bilateral incurved seahorse-shaped structure of the cerebral cortex. The hippocampus has a highly distinctive morphology. It is composed of two regions, the dentate gyrus (DG) and the Cornu Ammonis (CA). The nerve cells of the main layer of the DG and CA regions, the granule cells and pyramidal cells respectively, are organised in a tri-synaptic lamellaire circuit. The granule and pyramidal cells are glutamatergic excitatory. The granule cells elicit unique histological, biochemical, developmental, physio- and pathological features. The hippocampus is also an area of the brain that elicits a high degree of plasticity, like synaptic and phenotypic plasticity. It is also one of the few regions of the brain where neurogenesis, the generation of new nerve cells, occurs throughout adulthood. The hippocampus is involved in physio-and pathological processes, like learning and memory.

Book Diuretics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rainer F. Greger
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 364279565X
  • Pages : 535 pages

Download or read book Diuretics written by Rainer F. Greger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The action of diuretics including cellular mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and clinical usage, with much emphasis placed on the most recent findings on the pharmacodynamics of the respective drugs. During the past twenty-five years since volume 14 on Diuretica was published in the Handbook series, the cellular mechanisms of action of diuretics have slowly been unravelled. Today, the role of action within the target cells is known for most of the substances discussed. This has provided a new basis not only for the understanding of drug action but also for secondary effects and interactions. The book represents a comprehensive reference work on the diverse groups of diuretics which are among the most frequently prescribed medications.

Book Animal Clinical Chemistry

Download or read book Animal Clinical Chemistry written by G.O. Evans and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-04-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By presenting background information on the selection and application of biochemical tests in safety assessment studies, this text seeks to provide a basis for improving the knowledge required to interpret data from toxicological studies. In addition to chapters which discuss the assessment of specific organ toxicity (such as the liver, kidney and thyroid), the book also covers pre-analytical variables, regulatory requirements and statistical approaches, and highlights some of the major differences between man and different laboratory animals. The editor and contributor are all members of the Animal Clinical Chemistry Association, a group formed to advance the science of animal clinical chemistry in safety evaluation, toxicology and veterinary science.

Book A Flexible System of Enzymatic Analysis

Download or read book A Flexible System of Enzymatic Analysis written by Oliver Lowry and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Flexible System of Enzymatic Analysis is a multipurpose manual of laboratory methods that offers a systematic scheme for the analysis of biological materials from the level of the wholeorgan down to the single cell and beyond. It intends to guide the development of methods, the refinement of old ones, and the adaptation in general of methods to almost any scale of sensitivity. This manual is organized into three parts: a general section, one on quantitative histochemistry, and an appendix containing information that may be useful to have at the bench. The general section is comprised of nine chapters that focus on properties of the pyridine nucleotides, kinetics, and glassware, as well as on improvement, modification, adaptation, trouble shooting, and development of methods. This part also describes the preparation of tissues for analysis, the enzymatic cycling methods, and a compendium of 36 metabolite assays. The quantitative histochemistry section is comprised of four chapters that include information on the preparation of frozen-dried material and dissection of samples for analysis; the fishpole balance for weighing samples; and the generalities of analysis with emphasis on the ""oil well technique."" This book will be useful to novices as well as experts who are familiar with other analytical styles.

Book Microbial Root Endophytes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Barbara J.E. Schulz
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2007-05-24
  • ISBN : 3540335269
  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book Microbial Root Endophytes written by Barbara J.E. Schulz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book dedicated to the interactions of non-mycorrhizal microbial endophytes with plant roots. The phenotypes of these interactions can be extremely plastic, depending on environmental factors, nutritional status, genetic disposition and developmental stages of the two partners. This book explores diversity, life history strategies, interactions, applications in agriculture and forestry, methods for isolation, cultivation, and both conventional and molecular methods for identification and detection of these endophytes.

Book PGPR Biocontrol and Biofertilization

Download or read book PGPR Biocontrol and Biofertilization written by Zaki Anwar Siddiqui and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-19 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PGPR have gained world wide importance and acceptance for agricultural benefits. These microorganisms are the potential tools for sustainable agriculture and the trend for the future. Scientific researches involve multidisciplinary approaches to understand adaptation of PGPR to the rhizosphere, mechanisms of root colonization, effects on plant physiology and growth, biofertilization, induced systemic resistance, biocontrol of plant pathogens, production of determinants etc. Biodiversity of PGPR and mechanisms of action for the different groups: diazotrophs, bacilli, pseudomonads, and rhizobia are shown. Effects of physical, chemical and biological factors on root colonization and the proteomics perspective on biocontrol and plant defence mechanism is discussed. Visualization of interactions of pathogens and biocontrol agents on plant roots using autofluorescent protein markers has provided more understanding of biocontrol process. Commercial formulations and field applications of PGPR are detailed.

Book Biologic Markers in Urinary Toxicology

Download or read book Biologic Markers in Urinary Toxicology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-08-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diseases of the kidney, bladder, and prostate exact an enormous human and economic toll on the population of the United States. This book examines prevention of these diseases through the development of reliable markers of susceptibility, exposure, and effect and the promise that new technologies in molecular biology and sophisticated understanding of metabolic pathways, along with classical approaches to the study of nephrotoxicants and carcinogens, can be developed and prevention of the diseases achieved. The specific recommendations included in this book complement those made in the previous three volumes on biomarkers, Biologic Markers in Reproductive Toxicology (1989), Biologic Markers in Pulmonary Toxicology (1989), and Biologic Markers in Immunotoxicology (1991).
