Download or read book Recent Advances in Our Understanding of NEC Pathogenesis Diagnosis and Treatment written by Minesh Khashu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Necrotizing enterocolitis is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in newborns, especially those born preterm. The pathogenesis of NEC has intrigued the neonatal medical and surgical community for over 60 years. Significant strides have been made in recent years in our understanding of why NEC occurs. Efforts continue to be made to improve our ability to prevent NEC or minimize its risk. Earlier recognition and diagnosis of NEC is being explored through various research studies as are optimal surgical strategies for managing NEC.

Book Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Download or read book Necrotizing Enterocolitis written by David J. Hackam and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-14 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first textbook devoted entirely to understanding and treating necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), one of the leading causes of death and disability in premature infants. NEC continues to occur in neonatal units across the world, and the overall mortality has remained stubbornly high since its first description decades ago. Despite significant research into NEC, and a greater understanding of its underlying causes, there is no single source of information to which the care team can turn for guidance. This book fills that important gap in clinical care. In selecting the topics for this inaugural textbook, three guiding principles have been followed. First, to include chapters that provide detailed information for the medical team – the doctors and nurses, the therapists and pharmacists, the chaplains and the child life workers – so that each team member can optimally recognize, prevent and treat patients with this disease. Second, to ensure that chapters cover the depth and breadth of the latest clinical and scientific research into NEC, each selected to identify specific preventative strategies or therapies for this disease. Third, and perhaps most importantly, to focus not only on the child with NEC, but also on the child’s family, in order to provide comprehensive information about a disease that families have barely heard about, until the jarring day when their precious infant is affected by it. This book therefore: serves as a "how-to guide" for the care of the infant with NEC summarises critical new research and offers guidelines for future key research areas addresses the complex and difficult issues surrounding care of the critically ill infant suffering from NEC Written for the entire health care team including paediatric surgeons, neonatologists, developmental paediatricians, epidemiologists, ethicists, child life professionals, therapists and specialist nurses, each team member will find this book of value. This book was written to demystify this cruel disease, and to unlock its closely held secrets of pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Book Necrotizing Enterocolitis Insights Into Pathogenesis Diagnosis and Treatment

Download or read book Necrotizing Enterocolitis Insights Into Pathogenesis Diagnosis and Treatment written by David J. Hackam and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-07-31 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), described over 30 years ago, remains the leading cause of death in premature infants from gastrointestinal disease. It is axiomatic that NEC is both a devastatingly serious disease and one in which its very underpinnings remain a mystery. The disease develops quickly and without warning. Every clinician who takes care of neonates will attest to the typical scenario of a premature infant who is at first clinically stable, then subtly begins to manifest a series of symptoms which progress — often quite rapidly — from feeding intolerance, abdominal distention and bloody stools, to outright sepsis and hemodynamic instability. Every surgeon who operates on these fragile patients will have experienced the scenario where laparotomy reveals the presence of patchy necrosis of the intestine with a distribution and severity which may or may not match the clinical impression that was present preoperatively. A large number of studies have revealed that neither the type of surgery that is performed on patients with NEC, nor its timing, can significantly alter outcomes in patients with this disease. These clinical impressions reveal the highly variable nature of patients with NEC, and also underscore the fact that if we are to improve the outcome of these young children, then a clearer understanding of the pathogenesis of NEC at the molecular level is required. This textbook will focus on all major schools of thought regarding the factors that lead to the development of NEC, and will address the current scientific approach to the development of appropriate treatments. In addition, this book will address the complex social, ethical, nursing and rehabilitative issues that clinicians face when caring for patients with NEC. Finally, a significant focus of the book will be devoted to the scientific underpinnings of this disease, and the successes so far in the development of novel therapeutic approaches based upon these scientific discoveries.

Book Nutritional Care of Preterm Infants

Download or read book Nutritional Care of Preterm Infants written by B. Koletzko and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved conditions of care for premature infants have led to markedly increased survival rates over the last few decades, particularly in very low and extremely low birth weight infants. Nutritional measures play a central role in the long-term outcome, health and quality of life of these premature infants. In this publication, leading experts from all 5 continents present the most recent evidence and critical analyses of nutrient requirements and the practice of nutritional care (with the focus on very low birth weight infants) to provide guidance for clinical application. After the introductory chapters, covering nutritional needs and research evidence in a more general manner, topics such as amino acids and proteins, lipids, microminerals and vitamins, parenteral and enteral nutrition as well as approaches to various disease conditions are addressed. Due to its focus on critical appraisals and recommendations, this book is of interest not only for the researcher who wants to keep up to date, but also for the clinician faced with premature infants in his practice.

Book Neonatal Sepsis Current Insights and Challenges

Download or read book Neonatal Sepsis Current Insights and Challenges written by Rozeta Sokou and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-05 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the continuous progress in perinatal and neonatal care, sepsis is still a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates accounting for approximately 15% of deaths during the neonatal period globally. Additionally, despite being a life-threatening situation, sepsis in the neonatal population, and especially in very preterm neonates, is a potential source for short- and long-term morbidity and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Initial clinical signs and symptoms of sepsis are subtle and often non-specific in neonates, representing substantial impediments to the institutionalization of an international definition for sepsis in this population. Early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis is crucial and remains a major challenge for neonatologists due to nonspecific symptoms and laboratory tests with limited diagnostic value, resulting in the empirical and non-prudent antibiotics use, a common practice in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). Nevertheless, this practice is largely responsible for a high rate of antibiotic resistance in NICUs, a major issue for global healthcare systems, as it has been estimated that 31% of neonatal deaths related to sepsis can be attributed to antimicrobial resistance.
