Book Recent Advances in Fast response Miniature Neutron Flux Monitors

Download or read book Recent Advances in Fast response Miniature Neutron Flux Monitors written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fast response miniature neutron detector has been developed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL), to measure temperature-time history of fissile materials under intense neutron irradiation. The fissile-sensing element of the fission couple neutron detector is approximately 0.030 in. in diameter. The detector sensitivity for thermal neutrons is approximately 109 n/cm2 -°C. To determine any limitations in response time, fission couples were placed 3 m from a nuclear device in an underground nuclear weapons test at the Nevada Test Site. The detector accurately followed the change in neutron population (alpha measurement) as the device exploded. This rapid change in neutron population had an e-folding time of 20 nsec. A number of experiments were performed in various reactors so that such a detector could be developed. These experiments were conducted in a particular sequence and were aimed at investigating the characteristics, possible uses, and limitations of the fission couple. Some experimental results are discussed. The significance of the results obtained with fission couples suggests numerous applications in neutron diagnostics and reactor controls. The most obvious application for this instrument would be mapping of the neutron flux in and around a reactor. Other possible applications are also discussed. The miniature size and fast response of a fission couple combine to offer unique advantages as a new tool in reactor diagnostics and control. (auth).

Book excerpt: This bibiography is a compilation of unclassified publications of work done at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) for the years 1967 through 1971. Papers published in those years are included regardless of when they were actually written. Publications received too late for inclusion in earlier compilations are also included. Declassification of previously classified reports is considered to constitute publication. All classified issuances are omitted. The bibliography includes LASL reports, papers released as non-LASL reports, journal articles, books, chapters of books, conference papers (whether published separately or as part of conference proceedings issued as books or reports) papers published in congressional hearings, theses, and U.S. patents. Papers are included in the following categories: accelerators, aerospace studies, analytical technology, astrophysics, atomic physics, biology and medicine, chemical kinetics, chemistry, cryogenics, crystallography, engineering and equipment, EPR and NMR studies, equation of state and shock studies, explosives and detonations, fission physics, health and safety, hydrodynamics and radiation transport, instruments, mathematics and computers, mediumenergy physics, metallurgy and ceramics technology, molecular spectroscopy, Moessbauer effect, neutronics and criticality studies, nuclear physics, nuclear safeguards, optics and lasers, organic chemistry, physics, plasma physics, propulsion systems, reactor technology, solid state science, theoretical physics, thermionics, -waste disposal, and miscellaneous. Book Dynamics and Control in Nuclear Power Stations

Download or read book Dynamics and Control in Nuclear Power Stations written by British Nuclear Energy Society and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1992 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers a wider view of the aspects of control of nuclear power stations by taking into consideration the plant as a whole and the protection systems employed therein. Authors with world-wide experience consider all the aspects of dynamics and control in the context of both fast and thermal power stations. The topics discussed include both the methods of development and applications within - analysis of plant behaviour, validation of mathematical models, plant testing, design and implementation of controls.

Book The Development of a High Count Rate Neutron Flux Monitoring Channel Using Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Radiation Detectors

Download or read book The Development of a High Count Rate Neutron Flux Monitoring Channel Using Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Radiation Detectors written by Mehdi Reisi Fard and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In this dissertation, a fast neutron flux monitoring channel, which is based on the use of SiC semiconductor detectors is designed, modeled and experimentally evaluated as a power monitor for the Gas Turbine Modular Helium Reactors. A detailed mathematical model of the SiC diode detector and the electronic processing channel is developed using TRIM, MATLAB and PSpice simulation codes. The flux monitoring channel is tested at the OSU Research Reactor. The response of the SiC neutron-monitoring channel to neutrons is in close agreement to simulation results. Linearity of the channel response to thermal and fast neutron fluxes, pulse height spectrum of the channel, energy calibration of the channel and the detector degradation in a fast neutron flux are presented. Along with the model of the neutron monitoring channel, a Simulink model of the GT-MHR core has been developed to evaluate the power monitoring requirements for the GT-MHR that are most demanding for the SiC diode power monitoring system. The Simulink model is validated against a RELAP5 model of the GT-MHR. This dyanamic model is used to simulate reactor transients at the full power and at the start up, in order to identify the response time requirements of the GT-MHR. Based on the response time requirements that have been identified by the Simulink model and properties of the monitoring channel, several locations in the central reflector and the reactor cavity are identified to place the detector. The detector lifetime and dynamic range of the monitoring channel at the detector locations are calculated. The channel dynamic range in the GT-MHR central reflector covers four decades of the reactor power. However, the detector does not survive for a reactor refueling cycle in the central reflector. In the reactor cavity, the detector operates sufficiently long; however, the dynamic range of the channel is smaller than the dynamic range of the channel in the central reflector.
