Book Advances in Quaternary Entomology

Download or read book Advances in Quaternary Entomology written by Scott A. Elias and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-08-18 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Quaternary Entomology addresses the science of fossil insects by demonstrating their immense contribution to our knowledge of the paleoenvironmental and climatological record of the past 2.6 million years. In this comprehensive survey of the field, Scott A. Elias recounts development of scholarship, reviews the fossil insect record from Quaternary deposits throughout the world, and points to rewarding areas for future research. The study of Quaternary entomology is becoming an important tool in understanding past environmental changes. Most insects are quite specific as to habitat requirements, and those in non-island environments have undergone almost no evolutionary change in the Quaternary period. We therefore can use their modern ecological requirements as a basis for interpreting what past environments must have been like. Describes and identifies principal characteristics of fossil insect groups of the Quaternary period Ties Quaternary insect studies to the larger field of paleoecology Offers global coverage of the subject with specific regional examples Illustrates specific methods and procedures for conducting research in Quaternary Entomology Offers unique insight into overlying trends and broader implications of Quaternary climate change based on insect life of the period

Book Recent Advances in Stored Product Protection

Download or read book Recent Advances in Stored Product Protection written by Christos G. Athanassiou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to assess, evaluate and critically analyze the methods that are currently available for a judicious pest management in durable food. It presents and analyzes a vast amount of methods that are already in use in “real world” industrial applications. After the phase-out of methyl bromide, but also the withdrawal of several insecticides and the continuously updated food safety regulations, there is a significant knowledge gap on the use of risk-reduced, ecologically-compatible control methods that can be used with success against stored-product insect species and related arthropods. The importance of integrated pest management (IPM) is growing, but the concept as practiced for stored products might differ from IPM as historically developed for field crops. This book discusses a wide variety of control strategies used for stored product management and describes some of the IPM components. The editors included chemical and non-chemical methods, as both are essential in IPM. They set the scene for more information regarding emerging issues in stored product protection, such as emerging, alien and invasive species as threats for global food security, as well as the importance of stored-product arthropods for human health. Finally, the analysis of the economics of stored product protection is presented, from theory to practice.

Book Advances in Integrated Pest Management Technology

Download or read book Advances in Integrated Pest Management Technology written by Amarjit S Tanda and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization defines integrated pest management (IPM) as "the careful consideration of all available pest control techniques and subsequent integration of appropriate measures that discourage the development of pest populations and keep pesticides and other interventions to levels that are economically justified and reduce or minimize risks to human health and the environment. IPM emphasizes the growth of a healthy crop with the least possible disruption to agro-ecosystems and encourages natural pest control mechanisms. "Although this is a concept championed since the 70s, recent advances in agricultural biotechnologies and unfortunately, new problems brought on by global climate change warrant a reevaluation of how IPM can be implemented. This book aims at bringing out a comprehensive collection of information on all aspects of advances in integrated pest management technology in agriculture systems worldwide. The main focus of this book is to address the nano-biotechnology as sustainable solutions, biogenetic insect resistant plants in integrated pest management technology (IPMT), and DNA barcoding of insects and role of protease inhibitors in recent management trends. It also highlights the advances in integrated management of insect pests of stored grains, and use of bee pollinator’s as a livelihood security to the people worldwide. Step-by-step descriptions, accompanied by numerous photographs and schematic drawings, are provided on IPMT under changing climate, and habitat manipulation in crops. This book thus provides a forward-looking foundation for IPMT systems and its use in crop production.

Download or read book Entomology written by Cedric Gillott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-27 with total page 835 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gillott’s thorough yet clear writing style continues to keep Entomology near the top of the class as a text for senior undergraduates, and for graduate students and professionals seeking an introduction to specific entomological topics. The author’s long-held belief that an introductory entomology course should present a balanced treatment of the subject is reflected in the continued arrangement of the book in four sections: Evolution and Diversity, Anatomy and Physiology, Reproduction and Development, and Ecology. For the third edition, all chapters have been updated. This includes not only the addition of new information and concepts but also the reduction or exclusion of material no longer considered "mainstream", so as to keep the book at a reasonable size. Based on exciting discoveries made during the previous decade, the topics of insect evolutionary relationships, semiochemicals, gas exchange, immune responses (including those of parasites and parasitoids), flight, and the management of pests have received particular attention in the preparation of the third edition. Overall, more than 30 new or significantly revised figures have been incorporated.

Book Entomology and Pest Management

Download or read book Entomology and Pest Management written by Larry P. Pedigo and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideal for those with little or no background in the subject, "Entomology and Pest Management, fourth edition" promotes an understanding of major elements of general entomology and relates them to modern principles of insect pest management. Both theory and practice are emphasized and numerous examples are presented to facilitate learning. Pest management topics are discussed as aspects of "applied ecology," and solutions to pest problems are presented with regard to environmental quality, profitability, and durability. Profound changes have affected the world of pest management in recent years. Users of this fourth edition will benefit from the following new coverage, making this book the most up-to-date resource available: Favorite Web Sites are listed at the end of each chapter, and a new Appendix 4 presents one of the most comprehensive compilations of web sites for entomology resources found anywhere, providing readers with instant access to the latest facts, figures, and developments in the field. Information on the current developments of low risk tactics such as microbial pesticides, insect growth regulators, and pheromones are included in chapters 9 and 13. Recent advances in biotechnology, including updates on the status of transgenic plants developed for pest management and the benefits and risks of cropping these plants are discussed in chapter 12.

Book Integrated Management of Insect Pests

Download or read book Integrated Management of Insect Pests written by Marcos Kogan and published by Burleigh Dodds Agricultural Sc. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews current developments in integrated pest management (IPM), focussing on insect pests. It discusses advances in understanding species and landscape ecology on which IPM is founded, as well as advances in cultural, physical and biological methods of control. The first part of the book reviews current developments in understanding insect species, community and agroecosystems ecology. This understanding provides the foundation for developing effective IPM programmes which work with ecosystems to keep pests from reaching damaging levels. Parts 2 and 3 then review advances in cultural, physical and, in particular, biological methods of control. Chapters cover developments in classical, conservation and augmentative biological control as well as the use of entomopathogenic fungi, viruses, nematodes and semiochemicals. The final parts of the book summarise current research on monitoring pesticide use as well as emerging classes of biopesticides. Edited by pioneers in IPM techniques, and including contributions from some of most eminent experts in the field, this will be a standard reference for the IPM research community, crop scientists, entomologists, companies involved in pesticides and crop pest management as well as government agencies monitoring and regulating pest management in agriculture.
