Book Philological and Historical Commentary on Ammianus Marcellinus XXX

Download or read book Philological and Historical Commentary on Ammianus Marcellinus XXX written by Jan den Boeft and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of Book 30 of Ammianus Marcellinus’ Res Gestae is devoted to the military and diplomatic struggle for Armenia between Valens, emperor of the East, and king Sapor II of Persia. The Romans successfully defend their position, until they are forced to deal with the Goths who threaten to cross the Danube border. The second half of Book 30 is dominated by Valentinian I, emperor of the West. Ammianus presents a kaleidoscopic picture of this emperor alternating between admiration for his military qualities and devotion to his duty and bitter criticism of his avarice and cruelty. The account of his death forms the conclusion of Ammianus’ treatment of the history of the western half of the Empire.

Book One Volume Libraries Composite and Multiple Text Manuscripts

Download or read book One Volume Libraries Composite and Multiple Text Manuscripts written by Michael Friedrich and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite and multiple-text manuscripts are traditionally studied for their individual texts, but recent trends in codicology have paved the way for a more comprehensive approach: Manuscripts are unique artefacts which reveal how they were produced and used as physical objects. While multiple-text manuscripts codicologically are to be considered as production units, i.e. they were originally planned and realized in order to carry more than one text, composites consist of formerly independent codicological units and were put together at a later stage with intentions that might be completely different from those of its original parts. Both sub-types of manuscripts are still sometimes called "miscellanies", a term relating to the texts only. The codicological difference is important for reconstructing why and how these manuscripts which in many cases resemble (or contain) a small library were produced and used. Contributions on the manuscript cultures of China, India, Africa, the Islamic world and European traditions lead not only to the conclusion that "one-volume libraries" have been produced in many manuscript cultures, but allow also for the identification of certain types of uses.

Book A Critical Examination of the Coherence Based Genealogical Method in New Testament Textual Criticism

Download or read book A Critical Examination of the Coherence Based Genealogical Method in New Testament Textual Criticism written by Peter J. Gurry and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers the first sustained examination of the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method (CBGM), a computerized method being used to edit the most widely-used editions of the Greek New Testament. Part one addresses the CBGM’s history and reception before providing a fresh statement of its principles and procedures. Parts two and three consider the method’s ability to recover the initial text and to delineate its history. A new portion of the global stemma is presented for the first time and important conclusions are drawn about the nature of the initial text, scribal habits, and the origins of the Byzantine text. A final chapter suggests improvements and highlights limitations. Overall, the CBGM is positively assessed but not without important criticisms and cautions.
