The 16 chapters in this volume synthesize ecological and botanical principles regarding relationships between wildland fire and nonnative invasive plants, identify the nonnative invasive species currently of greatest concern in major bioregions of the United States, and describe emerging fire-invasive issues in each bioregion and throughout the nation. This volume can help increase understanding of plant invasions and fire and can be used in fire management and ecosystem-based management planning. The volume's first part summarizes fundamental concepts regarding fire effects on invasions by nonnative plants, effects of plant invasions on fuels and fire regimes, and use of fire to control plant invasions. The second part identifies the nonnative invasive species of greatest concern and synthesizes information on the three topics covered in part one for nonnative invasives in seven major bioregions of the United States: Northeast, Southeast, Central, Interior West, Southwest Coastal, Northwest Coastal (including Alaska), and Hawaiian Islands. When a polluted river or degraded landscape is restored from its damaged state, what is the appropriate outcome? With climate change now threatening greater disruption to the stability of ecosystems, how should restoration ecologists respond? Ecological Restoration and Environmental Change addresses and challenges some of these issues which question the core values of the science and practice of restoration ecology. It analyzes the paradox arising from the desire to produce ecological restorations that fit within an historical ecological context, produce positive environmental benefits and also result in landscapes with social meaning. Traditionally restorationists often felt that by producing restorations that matched historic ecosystems they were following nature's plans and human agency played only a small part in restoration. But the author shows that in reality the process of restoration has always been defined by human choices. He examines the development of restoration practice, especially in North America, Europe and Australia, in order to describe different models of restoration with respect to balancing ecological benefit and cultural value. He develops ways to balance more actively these differing areas of concern while planning restorations. The book debates in detail how coming global climate change and the development of novel ecosystems will force us to ask new questions about what we mean by good ecological restoration. When the environment is constantly shifting, restoration to maintain biodiversity, local species, and ecosystem functions becomes even more challenging. It is likely that in the future ecological restoration will become a never-ending, continuously evolving process.

The meeting, Growing Green in the New Millennium, was hosted by the Alabama Forestry Commission. Technical sessions were followed by tours of the E.A. Hauss Nursery in Atmore and the Knud Nielson Company in Evergreen. The Northeastern Nursery Conference was held at the House on the Rock Resort in Spring Green, Wisconsin, on July 5-8. The meeting, Nurreriesfor the Future, was hosted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Nursery Association. In addition to the technical sessions, participants toured the Wilson State Nursery. Members of the Western Forest and Conservation Nursery Association conducted their meeting August 22-25 at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The meeting was hosted by the Hawaii Department of Forestry and Wildlife. Technical presentations covered operational nursery practices from around the world. Tours included the native plant nursery at Volcanoes National Park and the Kamuela State Forest Nursery. 2001: Toftrees Conference Center in State College, Pennsylvania, was the site for the Northeastern Nursery Conference held July 23-26. The meeting, Sclstainable Nurseries-Sustainable Forests, was hosted by Penn Nursery. The Western Forest and Conservation Nursery Association conducted their meeting July 30-August 3 at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. The meeting was hosted by the Colorado State Forest Service and tours includcd the BIA Southern Ute Forest Nursery and Mesa Verde National Park.

The book examines how CO2 is acquired by algae and by plants and is divided into three sections. The first section concentrates on the pathways (the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle and photorespiration, with particular emphasis on the enzyme ribulose bisphospate carboxylase/oxygenase, Rubisco) and the regulation of CO2 fixation. The second section deals with the fate of fixed carbon, in chapters on the synthesis of products, such as sucrose, starch, fructans and sugar alcohols, and with the regulation of cellular partitioning of carbon, including topics such as respiration and feedback regulation of photosynthesis by carbohydrates. The last section concentrates on the various problems that plants face in taking up CO2 from their environment, and how CO2 concentrating mechanisms operate in the algae and in plants with C4 photosynthesis and Crassulacean Acid Metabolism. The ecological significance of these mechanisms is also discussed.
