Book Recalibration of Bartels Geomagnetic Activity Indices Kp and Ap to Include Universal Time Variations

Download or read book Recalibration of Bartels Geomagnetic Activity Indices Kp and Ap to Include Universal Time Variations written by Leif Svalgaard and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ap index (and derived indices) can be recalibrated using Mayuad's am-index to recover the correct Universal Time variations. Such variations were artificially removed in the original ap-index. A number of tests are performed to show that the correct index is capable of revealing the desired variations. These tests include comparisons of the UT-variations on days of opposite interplanetary magnetic sector polarity. A finding, that geomagnetic activity was considerably higher during intervals of Toward polarity prior to 1963, is strongly confirmed.

Book excerpt: The latest attempt to summarize the wealth of knowledge now available on geomagnetic phenomena has resulted in this comprehensive multi-volume treatise, with original up-to-date review articles from many distinguished experts. The third volume of this series covers two broad topics--the relevance of the Eatrh's magnetic field for geological studies and the physics of the upper atmosphere.

Book A Discussion of the Geomagnetic Indices Kp and Ap 1932 to 1971

Download or read book A Discussion of the Geomagnetic Indices Kp and Ap 1932 to 1971 written by Allan L. Cage and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years (1 January 1932 to 31 December 1971) of geomagnetic data in terms of the indices Kp and ap were examined. The frequency distributions of these indices and their semiannual and diurnal variations are tabulated and discussed. Frequency tables were generated based on the present value of the index and the succeeding value of the index. These tables clearly demonstrate the persistent nature of Kp and ap. The use of these data as an aid in geomagnetic forecasting is also discussed. (Author).

Book Spectrum of the Geomagnetic Activity Index Ap

Download or read book Spectrum of the Geomagnetic Activity Index Ap written by Stanford University. Stanford Electronics Laboratories and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ionospheric propagation of high-frequency radio waves is profoundly influenced by the variations of sunspot numbers and of geomagnetic activity. Thus, details of these variations, and of the relationship between them, has practical application. The variation of the geomagnetic activity index Ap over the 38-year interval January, 1932 through January, 1970 differs in several important characteristics from the variation of sunspot numbers over the same interval. A spectral analysis approach was used d to investigate this variation of AP, as well as its relation to the variation of sunspot numbers. The data analyzedconsisted of the 457 monthly average AP indices (AP) for the interval and the corresponding observed monthly sunspot numbers. Several large samples of the original daily Ap indices were also analyzed. Two of the latter samples covered 11-year intervals (April 1, 1944 - June 2, 1955; and June 1, 1956 - July 31, 1967) and the third covered a 23-year interval (April 1, 1944 - December, 1967). Book Interhourly Variability Index of Geomagnetic Activity and Its Use in Deriving the Long Term Variation of Solar Wind Speed

Download or read book Interhourly Variability Index of Geomagnetic Activity and Its Use in Deriving the Long Term Variation of Solar Wind Speed written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [1] We describe the detailed derivation of the interhourly variability (IHV) index of geomagnetic activity. The IHV index for a given geomagnetic element is mechanically derived from hourly values or means as the sum of the unsigned differences between adjacent hours over a 7-hour interval centered on local midnight The index is derived separately for stations in both hemispheres within six longitude sectors spanning the Earth using only local night hours. It is intended as a long-term index and available data allows derivation of the index back well into the 19th century. On a time scale of a 27-day Bartels rotation, averages for stations with corrected geomagnetic latitude less than 55 degrees, are strongly correlated with midlatitude range indices (R2 - 0.96 for the am index since 1959; R = 0.95 for the aa index since 1980). We find that observed yearly averages of aa before the year 1957 are ~3 nT too small compared to values calculated from IHV using the regression constants based on 1980-2004. We interpret this discrepancy as an indication that the calibration of the aa index is in error before 1957. There is no systematic discrepancy between observed and similarly calculated ap values back to 1932. Bartels rotation averages of IHV are also strongly correlated with solar wind paremeters (R2 =079 with RV2).
