Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout West African societies, at times of social crises, postmenopausal women—the Mothers—make a ritual appeal to their innate moral authority. The seat of this power is the female genitalia. Wielding branches or pestles, they strip naked and slap their genitals and bare breasts to curse and expel the forces of evil. In An Intimate Rebuke Laura S. Grillo draws on fieldwork in Côte d’Ivoire that spans three decades to illustrate how these rituals of Female Genital Power (FGP) constitute religious and political responses to abuses of power. When deployed in secret, FGP operates as spiritual warfare against witchcraft; in public, it serves as a political activism. During Côte d’Ivoire’s civil wars FGP challenged the immoral forces of both rebels and the state. Grillo shows how the ritual potency of the Mothers’ nudity and the conjuration of their sex embodies a moral power that has been foundational to West African civilization. Highlighting the remarkable continuity of the practice across centuries while foregrounding the timeliness of FGP in contemporary political resistance, Grillo shifts perspectives on West African history, ethnography, comparative religious studies, and postcolonial studies.

Book The Lives of Girls and Women from the Islamic World in Early Modern British Literature and Culture

Download or read book The Lives of Girls and Women from the Islamic World in Early Modern British Literature and Culture written by Bernadette Andrea and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernadette Andrea’s groundbreaking study recovers and reinterprets the lives of women from the Islamic world who travelled, with varying degrees of volition, as slaves, captives, or trailing wives to Scotland and England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Andrea’s thorough and insightful analysis of historical documents, visual records, and literary works focuses on five extraordinary women: Elen More and Lucy Negro, both from Islamic West Africa; Ipolita the Tartarian, a girl acquired from Islamic Central Asia; Teresa Sampsonia, a Circassian from the Safavid Empire; and Mariam Khanim, an Armenian from the Mughal Empire. By analysing these women’s lives and their impact on the literary and cultural life of proto-colonial England, Andrea reveals that they are simultaneously significant constituents of the emerging Anglo-centric discourse of empire and cultural agents in their own right. The Lives of Girls and Women from the Islamic World in Early Modern British Literature and Culture advances a methodology based on microhistory, cross-cultural feminist studies, and postcolonial approaches to the early modern period.

Book The Art of Biblical Narrative

Download or read book The Art of Biblical Narrative written by Robert Alter and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From celebrated translator of the Hebrew Bible Robert Alter, the "groundbreaking" (Los Angeles Times) book that explores the Bible as literature, a winner of the National Jewish Book Award. Renowned critic and translator Robert Alter's The Art of Biblical Narrative has radically expanded our view of the Bible by recasting it as a work of literary art deserving studied criticism. In this seminal work, Alter describes how the Hebrew Bible's many authors used innovative literary styles and devices such as parallelism, contrastive dialogue, and narrative tempo to tell one of the most revolutionary stories of all time: the revelation of a single God. In so doing, Alter shows, these writers reshaped not only history, but also the art of storytelling itself.

Book excerpt: In the stunning conclusion to the Matchstick Man saga that began with Event and continued with Legacy, the End of Days is upon humanity---invasion has arrived! Some speculate that the war between the two worlds began 700 million years ago, while others say it started in 1947 over a small town in New Mexico called Roswell. Regardless of dates, the war is now upon us, and after centuries of watching, the enemy attacked. The plans of a million years are finally ready for what we have always known was coming---Armageddon. As world allies fall to the wayside, a growing political faction from several nations sends a clear signal that cooperation between the superpowers and the lesser states cannot succeed. As nations start a mad scramble to realign their military structures, the war begins silently in the depths of the oceans, and flares to global brightness with the first military strike in history between two different worlds. Only one element in the arsenal of the world can possibly give Earth a fighting chance at survival---a small being that has already saved the world once in the Arizona desert is now called upon to outthink his former masters---the Matchstick Man. While Matchstick Man searches for the real motivation behind the invasion, the Event Group is the one entity that refuses to accept the inevitable defeat of humankind. They've learned that the answer to this war has always been here on earth buried deeply in our ancient past, and that they may even hold the clue to salvation inside their own artifact vault. But with the devastating loss of its military arm and one of their leaders, Colonel Jack Collins, the group is being torn apart by internal conflict and devastating personal decisions. Even worse, the group's old enemies have returned to take revenge, and the worst fears of Department 5656 are realized---a breach in security allows intruders to get at the secrets inside the complex in Nevada. Can the group come together to defeat their enemy and defend the planet? As the war wages on, countries fall, nations fight to the last man, and the fate of the planet depends on a few good men and women in this action-packed thrill ride from New York Times bestselling author David L. Golemon.

Book Preserving the Spell

Download or read book Preserving the Spell written by Armando Maggi and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairy tales are supposed to be magical, surprising, and exhilarating, an enchanting counterpoint to everyday life that nonetheless helps us understand and deal with the anxieties of that life. Today, however, fairy tales are far from marvelous—in the hands of Hollywood, they have been stripped of their power, offering little but formulaic narratives and tame surprises. If we want to rediscover the power of fairy tales—as Armando Maggi thinks we should—we need to discover a new mythic lens, a new way of approaching and understanding, and thus re-creating, the transformative potential of these stories. In Preserving the Spell, Maggi argues that the first step is to understand the history of the various traditions of oral and written narrative that together created the fairy tales we know today. He begins his exploration with the ur-text of European fairy tales, Giambattista Basile’s The Tale of Tales, then traces its path through later Italian, French, English, and German traditions, with particular emphasis on the Grimm Brothers’ adaptations of the tales, which are included in the first-ever English translation in an appendix. Carrying his story into the twentieth century, Maggi mounts a powerful argument for freeing fairy tales from their bland contemporary forms, and reinvigorating our belief that we still can find new, powerfully transformative ways of telling these stories.
