Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes a fresh lookâ€"primarily from a technological perspectiveâ€"at the nation's "infrastructure": a collection of diverse modes that function as a system supporting a wide range of economic and social activities. Within an infrastructure system, operating and maintenance procedures, management practices, and development policies (i.e., the software) must work together with the facilities' hardware. This study has a strongly local perspective, drawing valuable information from workshops held in Phoenix, Cincinnati, and Boston. These workshops illustrated common elements of local experience that offer infrastructure practitioners, policymakers, and the public at large both understanding and guidance in the form of specific strategies that can lead toward "win-win" situations, where parties with potentially opposing interests seek a way to resolve infrastructure issues so that all parties gain. Local issues, combined across many regions, give infrastructure its strategic national significance. The book recommends specific principles that should be applied in national policy to support effective local infrastructure development and management.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States commits many troops, and resources each year to the Humanitarian and Civic Assistance Program to the far reaches of the globe. In the SOUTHCOM area of operations alone, lO,785 reserve and national guard engineers devoted to a subset program, infrastructure rebuilding, deployed to 12 different countries in 1995. These soldiers performed 129 projects using over $2.3 million in materials. The military seeks to enhance the training readiness of the individuals and units involved in these exercises while at the same time furthering the interests of the United States in the countries impacted. This paper explores the question: Are the efforts to rebuild and improve the infrastructure in target nations achieving the desired results within both those countries and the United States military? To bring focus and depth to these issues this paper examines the United States efforts in Panama since 1989.

Book excerpt: Great natural disasters are rare, but their aftermath can change the fortunes of a city or region forever. This book and its companion Policy Focus Report identify lessons from different parts of the world to help communities and government leaders better organize for recovery after future disasters. The authors consider the processes and outcomes of community recovery and reconstruction following major disasters in six countries: China, New Zealand, India, Indonesia, Japan, and the United States. Post-disaster reconstruction offers opportunities to improve construction and design standards, renew infrastructure, create new land use arrangements, reinvent economies, and improve governance. If done well, reconstruction can help break the cycle of disaster-related impacts and losses, and improve the resilience of a city or region.

Book National Infrastructure

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting the critical infrastructure and key resources (CI/KR) of the United States is essential to the Nation's security, public health and safety, economic vitality, and way of life. Attacks on CI/KR could significantly disrupt the functioning of government and business alike and produce cascading effects far beyond the targeted sector and physical location of the incident. Direct terrorist attacks and natural, manmade, or technological hazards could produce catastrophic losses in terms of human casualties, property destruction, and economic effects, as well as profound damage to public morale and confidence. Attacks using components of the Nation's CI/KR as weapons of mass destruction could have even more devastating physical and psychological consequences.
