Chapter three is on how the OWTU responded to the government's development policies,and their impacts on the OWTU and the trade union movement including how the anti-government movement challenged the PNM- government's approach to workers' rights. Chapter four describes the organizational changes the Rebels pursued to strengthen the internal workings of the union enabling it to function in a hostile political environment. Chapter five deals with PNM Government's response to the activities of the OWTU. In a political climate that was highly charged with anti-communist sentiments and attempts to silence the anti-government movement. Chapter six discusses the attempt to sabotage and crush the OWTU. Chapter seven analyzes the economic and political struggles the OWTU waged against multinationals. Chapter eight continues the OWTU engagement against foreign multinationals and local corporations as it sought to protect the interests of its members and the labor movement.Chapter nine examines the OWTU and the Challenges of Working-class Political Party formation and Electoral politics.Chapter ten is on the OWTU's role in the 1970 Black Power Revolution.Chapter eleven addresses the government, the OWTU and the struggle for nationalization,of the Petroleum industry during the period 1956-1987. Book excerpt: This thesis is a labour history of Trinidad and Tobago, concentrating on the period from 1937 to 1990. The study attempts to show that there is not a unified or homogenous working class, and for this reason both traditional Marxist and industrial relations theories are rejected. Instead, the history of labour focuses on how the working classes have been divided by factors such as race, gender, class structure and politics. These divisions are used as an explanation for the absence of a popular socialist party in the country. It concludes that the economic recession of the 1980s has led to the worst crisis in the history of the labour movement, but at the same time, this has laid the framework for a new strategy of social movement unionism, which attempts to constructively engage with, rather than ignore, divisions within the working classes. The main sources of data were documentary and archival material, and in particular, reports made by the British TUC and Colonial Office, industrial relations legislation, and trade union and political party documents and manifestoes. For the contemporary period, these sources of data were supplemented by fifteen interviews with leading figures in trade union and labour politics. The work is based on a macro approach to the study of labour, and as such constitutes a new and original approach to the study of labour in Trinidad and Tobago. In addition, more contemporary trade union documents and interviews provided the researcher with new and original material.

Fergus presents new insights into one of the most intriguing and momentous episodes of Atlantic history. In Revolutionary Emancipation, Fergus argues that the 1760 rebellion in Jamaica, Tacky's War -- the largest and most destructive rebellion of enslaved peoples in the Americas prior to the Haitian Revolution -- provided the rationale for abolition and reform of the colonial system. Fergus shows that following Tacky's War, British colonies in the West Indies sought political preservation under state-regulated amelioration of slavery. He further contends that abolitionists' successes -- from partial to general prohibition of the slave trade -- hinged more on the economic benefits of creolizing slave labor and the costs of preserving the colonies from destructive emancipation rebellions than on a conviction of justice and humanity for Africans. In the end, Fergus maintains, slaves' commitment to revolutionary emancipation kept colonial focus on reforming the slave system. His study carefully dissects new evidence and reinterprets previously held beliefs, offering historians the most compelling arguments for African agency in abolitionism.
