Book Rebels Despots and Saints

Download or read book Rebels Despots and Saints written by Sandhya Rani Jha and published by Chalice Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In decades of community organizing, racial justice, and pastoral work, Sandhya Rani Jha has discovered that communities and individuals who honor and recognize their ancestors tend to thrive and navigate hard seasons with more ease. People of color and white people alike have a myriad of ancestors (biological, cultural, and movement) who can help us navigate the challenges of today by learning from both the wisdom and follies, the suffering and overcoming, the spiritual practices and the acts of resistance that our ancestors navigated…and sometimes created. With an approachable and conversational tone, Rebels, Despots, & Saints shares case studies of activists and spiritual leaders as well as ways to re-think who our ancestors are and how to relate to them. Writing and discussion prompts and suggestions for personal and community rituals provide readers the tools needed to connect with their own ancestors and find grounding for racial reconciliation and liberation in their own communities. These reflections always connect to the work of dismantling white supremacy as a spiritual practice.

Book Race Rights and Rebels

Download or read book Race Rights and Rebels written by Julia Suárez-Krabbe and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights and development cannot be understood separately. They are historically connected by the idea of race, and have evolved concomitantly with the latter. As the tools of race, human rights and development have been forged in the effort to legitimize and maintain coloniality. While rights and development can be used as tools to achieve protection, specific political goals, or access in the dominant society, they limit radical social change because they are framed within a specific dominant ontology, and sustain a particular political horizon. This book provides an original analysis of the evolution of the overlapping histories of human rights and development through the prism of coloniality, and offers an important contribution to the search for alternatives to these through the lens of indigenous and other southern theories and epistemologies. In this effort, Julia Suárez-Krabbe brings new perspectives to discussions pertaining to the decolonial perspective, race, knowledge, pluriversality, mestizaje and identity while elaborating on original philosophical concepts that can ground alternatives to human rights and development.

Book The Patriot Ancestors of the Bosque River Valley Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution

Download or read book The Patriot Ancestors of the Bosque River Valley Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution written by and published by . This book was released on 2017-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings back the spirit of our American patriots who found within themselves an uncommon valor and tenacity which saw them through the valiant struggle for liberty and independence during the Revolution. These were common, every day men, women and children born during an extraordinary time in history. They were called upon to put their lives and fortunes on the line for the right to simply worship as they wished and raise their families free from the yoke of tyranny. We are reminded that they aren¿t merely lost and forgotten, antiquated rebels who had nothing in common with us. Indeed, they are our direct ancestors¿grandmothers and grandfathers whose blood runs in our veins; whose life stories have largely been written out of history. It is up to us to rediscover, through their lives, who we are and where we came from. Only by doing so will we be able to hold on to the peace and liberty they fought so hard to obtain. These patriots who sacrificed so much never received the benefits of their efforts.

  • Author : Tatsuyoshi Saijo
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2020-07-25
  • ISBN : 9811554072
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Future Design written by Tatsuyoshi Saijo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses imaginary future generations and how current decision-making will influence those future generations. Markets and democracies focus on the present and therefore tend to make us forget that we are living in the present, with ancestors preceding and descendants succeeding us. Markets are excellent devices to equate supply and demand in the short term, but not for allocating resources between current and future generations, since future generations do not exist yet. Democracy is also not “applicable” for future generations, since citizens vote for candidates who will serve members of their, i.e., the current, generation. In order to overcome these shortcomings, the authors discusses imaginary future generations and future ministries in the context of current decision-making in fields such as the environment, urban management, forestry, water management, and finance. The idea of imaginary future generations comes from the Native American Iroquois, who had strong norms that compelled them to incorporate the interests of people seven generations ahead when making decisions.

Malley has led the constables on a merry chase across her once-peaceful country. But Malley will not go down without a fight. She’s determined to rally her fellow students to form a rebellion of their own. The government can lock these girls up in reform school. Whether it can break them is another matter entirely…

Book Last in a Long Line of Rebels

Download or read book Last in a Long Line of Rebels written by Lisa Lewis Tyre and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheila Turnage meets Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn-Dixie in this debut about a small town and a young girl who discovers some old family secrets. Lou might be only twelve, but she’s never been one to take things sitting down. So when her Civil War-era house is about to be condemned, she’s determined to save it—either by getting it deemed a historic landmark or by finding the stash of gold rumored to be hidden nearby during the war. As Lou digs into the past, her eyes are opened when she finds that her ancestors ran the gamut of slave owners, renegades, thieves and abolitionists. Meanwhile, some incidents in her town show her that many Civil War era prejudices still survive and that the past can keep repeating itself if we let it. Digging into her past shows Lou that it’s never too late to fight injustice, and she starts to see the real value of understanding and exploring her roots.

Book Peasants Rebels Women and Outcastes

Download or read book Peasants Rebels Women and Outcastes written by Mikiso Hane and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling social history uses diaries, memoirs, fiction, trial testimony, personal recollections, and eyewitness accounts to weave a fascinating tale of what ordinary Japanese endured throughout their country’s era of economic growth. Through vivid, often wrenching accounts of peasants, miners, textile workers, rebels, and prostitutes, Mikiso Hane forces us to see Japan’s “modern century” (from the beginnings of contact with the West to World War II) through fresh eyes. In doing so, he mounts a formidable challenge to the success story of Japan’s “economic miracle.” Starting with the Meiji restoration of 1868, Hane vividly illustrates how modernization actually widened the gulf, economically and socially, between rich and poor, between the mo-bo and mo-ga (“modern boy” and “modern girl”) of the cities and their rural counterparts. He interlaces his scholarly narrative with sharply etched individual stories that allow us see Japan from the bottom up. We feel the back-breaking labor of a typical farm family; the anguish of poverty-stricken parents forced to send their daughters to Japan’s new mills, factories, and brothels; the hopelessness in rural areas scourged by famine; the proud defiance of women battling against patriarchy; and the desperation of being on strike in a company town, in revolt in the countryside, or conscripted into the army. This updated edition is enhanced by a substantive new introduction by Samuel H. Yamashita. By allowing the underprivileged to speak for themselves, Hane and Yamashita present us with a unique people’s history of an often-hidden world.
