Download or read book Pastimes of the Unseen written by Dean Vyas and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are forces around us, good and evil, that have total involvement in our lives, and yet we have no knowledge of them. These forces, from a realm of spirit, are helping or damning us, simultaneously. From the present day to far into the future, the line of the Priest family, from generation to generation, are siding with the forces of good. But what will be the outcome of this allegiance with these forces? Will their beliefs and actions be futile or efficacious in the greater scheme of things? Similarly, the progress of humanity is splitsome venerating the benevolent forces, while a faction veers away into the hands of those evil. And these two aspects of the human race are in conflict; the Priests, therefore, are also embroiled. Wars result, and consequentially a renegade portion of humanity becomes a breed of cold monsters, half machine. They enact a final war But who will emerge triumphant? Whose philosophy is right, whose is wrong? And what to speak of the far reaching consequences for the spirit of these antagonistic facets of humanity? The humble Priests find themselves implicated; they are to play a vital role in the evolution of humanity and an oppressed race enslaved by the cyborgs, where interstellar space travel, the terraforming of planets, and extreme genetic engineering become possible, where events of Biblical magnitude take place. Pastimes of the Unseen is a story describing those forces around us, invisible, that are vying for our very body, and soul, wanting to destroy it or glorify it, and the consequence of our relationship to one or other of these forces.

Download or read book Alternate Americas written by M. Keith Booker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-02-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 50 years, science fiction films have been among the most important and successful products of American cinema, and are worthy of study for that reason alone. On a deeper level, the genre has reflected important themes, concerns and developments in American society, so that a history of science fiction film also serves as a cultural history of America over the past half century. M. Keith Booker has selected fifteen of the most successful and innovative science fiction films of all time, and examined each of them at length—from cultural, technical and cinematic perspectives—to see where they came from and what they meant for the future of cinema and for America at large. From Invasion of the Body Snatchers to Star Wars, from Blade Runner to The Matrix, these landmark films have expressed our fears and dreams, our abilities and our deficiencies. In this deep-seeking investigation, we can all find something of ourselves that we recognize, as well as something that we've never recognized before. The focus on a fairly small number of landmark films allows detailed attention to genuinely original movies, including: Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Alien, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Robocop, The Abyss, Independence Day, and The Matrix. This book is ideal for general readers interested in science fiction and film.

Download or read book When Men Revolt and Why written by James Chowning Davies and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environment within which humans interact has changed dramatically since the Industrial Revolution. However, their expectations stem from the same hopes and dreams people have had from the beginning of humankind. When Men Revolt and Why encourages readers to look closer and more deeply into the relationships between humans and the institutions that have originated to help them realize their full potential. The contributors not only examine people, but also the need to change institutions that have outworn their usefulness. When institutions inhibit rather than facilitate everyone's desire to live a full life, the result is likely to be violence. This book offers the ideas of many people who have tried to dig deeper into basic causes of violence. Included in this volume are selections by Aristotle, Tocqueville./Marx and Engels, and Brinton. The ideas they espoused still hold vitality. In his new introduction, James Davies talks about the circumstances under which this book was originally published. In Vietnam, a people were fighting for their autonomy. In the United States, many Americans were protesting against American involvement in the Vietnam War. Blacks were marching for their civil rights. Women were fighting for equality. Time has tempered these conflicts. Davies maintains that we remain ignorant of the elemental forces that impel people and nations to resort to violence. We are usually surprised by their anger and shocked by their violence. Davies asserts that we need to learn more about how humans respond to change so as to prepare ourselves for such responses to change. When Men Revolt and Why is as timely as ever as we deal with uncertainty in various areas of the worldâ the former Yugoslavia, the Middle East, and Ireland, among others. It is especially pertinent for political scientists, historians, and sociologists.

Download or read book The Rebel s Clinic written by Adam Shatz and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Lit Hub's most anticipated books of 2024 A revelatory biography of the writer-activist who inspired today’s movements for social and racial justice In the era of Black Lives Matter, Frantz Fanon’s shadow looms larger than ever. He was the intellectual activist of the postcolonial era, and his writings about race, revolution, and the psychology of power continue to shape radical movements across the world. In this searching biography, Adam Shatz tells the story of Fanon’s stunning journey, which has all the twists of a Cold War-era thriller. Fanon left his modest home in Martinique to fight in the French Army during World War II; when the war was over, he fell under the influence of Existentialism while studying medicine in Lyon and trying to make sense of his experiences as a Black man in a white city. Fanon went on to practice a novel psychiatry of “dis-alienation” in rural France and Algeria, and then join the Algerian independence struggle, where he became a spokesman, diplomat, and clandestine strategist. He died in 1961, while under the care of the CIA in a Maryland hospital. Today, Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth have become canonical texts of the Black and global radical imagination, comparable to James Baldwin’s essays in their influence. And yet they are little understood. In The Rebel’s Clinic, Shatz offers a dramatic reconstruction of Fanon’s extraordinary life—and a guide to the books that underlie today’s most vital efforts to challenge white supremacy and racial capitalism. Includes 8 pages of black-and-white photographs

From the early days when live music accompanied silent films to the present in which a composer can draw upon a full orchestra or a lone synthesizer to embody a composition, music has been an integral element of most films. By the late 1930s, movie studios had established music departments, and some of the greatest names in film music emerged during Hollywood’s Golden Age, including Alfred Newman, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, and Bernard Herrmann. Over the decades, other creators of screen music offered additional memorable scores, and some composers—such as Henry Mancini, Randy Newman, and John Williams—have become household names. The Encyclopedia of Film Composers features entries on more than 250 movie composers from around the world. It not only provides facts about these artists but also explains what makes each composer notable and discusses his or her music in detail. Each entry includes Biographical material Important dates Career highlights Analysis of the composer’s musical style Complete list of movie credits This book brings recognition to the many men and women who have written music for movies over the past one hundred years. In addition to composers from the United States and Great Britain, artists from dozens of other countries are also represented. A rich resource of movie music history, The Encyclopedia of Film Composers will be of interest to fans of cinema in general as well as those who want to learn more about the many talented individuals who have created memorable scores.
